There are two things I would trade almost anything to see. The first is when ALL these pathetic bible beaters who have done soooo much to give christendom a bad name go in front of God on Judgement day-and TRY to explain away their behavior. The 2nd is when the devil gets back to his pad from torturing Hitler and Mussolini-and finds out what they've been doin' there while he was gone.......

I hear the Republifundies are gearing up to sacrifice come goats, and eat the babies of a few poor people. The festivities are planned for after Church, of course. Gotta keep up appearances, after all.

Evangelicals are hosting a pray-in to defeat Satan. I'm guessing they'll claim a victory. Sort of a holy Mission Accomplished. Wonder if they did the same in 1906, 1806,... Funny thing, June 6 wasn't June 6 when Revelations was hallucinated. Fundamentalists: Proof there was no Intelligence in the Design.

"the number of the beast" What was lost in the translation is that there is no "the" in Greek. So it's not the number of THE beast. Conrad said the beast resides in all of us. I'd have to concur. But I'll toast a brewski tomorrow just in case. I mean, maybe the Devil is not such a bad guy after all. Everything we hear about him is heresay, and who's to say that God is telling the truth.

Also, remember that this whole "666, end of the world, armaghedon, Damien, etc." tale is of recent origin. It's only a very loud minority of Christians who adhere to it. When John wrote Revelation, he was writing about the persecution of 1st Century Christians under Emperor Domitian. All this other crap is Jesus Science Fiction, for fundamentalists who don't want to learn the history of their own faith.

ahahahhaa....hehe...(wipes tears of mirth from his eyes)...some of these posts are hilarious..333...others, just sad... ever notice how...when religion starts to flag...when people start drifting away from church a bit that you hear yet another, "It's the End of the World" scenario from the Fundys, Evangelicals, or the Catholic church... "Oh but this time it'll be true, no really, now hand me your wallet!" I'd like to see who is REALLY behind the funding of movies like the Exorcist or the Omen...someone w way too much time on their hands oughta research that... I'll bet you will find CHURCH dollars involved somewhere... Gotta keep those SHEEP God Fearing and donating dolla's!! Go see the Da Vinci Code... Crack a book OTHER than the Bible... Get a Life b4 your time does run out.. OR...remain down on your knees, praying to a God that may or may not exist, but whom regardless of the fact, never answers... P.S. I'm not Lucifer, not by a long shot, just a single father tryin to get by AND the only BEAST I know of for a fact is MAN...

Earthmuse If you think The Da Vinci Code is factual...well...you're as gullible as the people who think the events portrayed in the Left Behind series could actually happen. I have just started the book and I haven't seen the movie, but if its anything like Angels and Demons, which I have read, it's a piece of poorly written, manipulative trash (albeit entertaining). If you do just a bit of research beyond that story, you realize that much of what he writes is just plain wrong. There aren't 666 panes of glass in the Lourve pyramid, for example; that was a rumor encouraged by Parisians who thought the glass pyramid was an eyesore on their fair city. But just keep "donating dollars" to that literary hack.

Vernon, usually you piss me off but today you are on a roll! And Dylanfan, most people believe "Code" is as real as Harry Potter, or "the Force". And as far as a book's accuracy, wanna start documenting things in the Bible? But the fundies sure know how to promote them.

dylanfan...(at least you got one good thing goin for u...) never said the movie was factual...but, I would say this...anything that teaches people to question what they've been taught,to actually "use" their brains, instead of roaming thru life like a herd of aimless sheep, then I'm all for it... If I'm guilty of that..then so be it... I am a scientist afterall...so if it makes you feel better...join the legions of Right Wing Christians bashing scientists.. its quite entertaining to me...better than p.s. dylanfan....you should practice "Reading" posts b4 u actually respond to them... btw...i have not yet bought the book.. whereas you, by your own admission may have (unless u hv a copy frm the library). I did see the movie, however, and whilst i found the part of Silas over the top (which is typical of any hollywood villian) the rest of the movie was pretty derned good (i would say damned...but i dont want to give you any extra ammunition)...oh hell, I just said it...(yawns and waits for the lightning bolt)... Nope. Still alive...go figure? But seriously...I was perhaps a little out of line...and for that I appologize.. i tend not to take posts here too seriously, and tend to stomp on other people's posies from time to time... I cant help it, its that Irish-German American Mut blood mix....seriously, it outta be outlawed...

Vernon, usually you piss me off but today you are on a roll! Posted by northguy3 at 2006-06-05 12:45 PM | Reply Well, maybe tomorrow I can get back to pissing you off! Actually, I taught church history at the college level for several years and this is one of my favorite topics. I'd always have a handful of 'true believers' from the Hal Lindsey crowd go ape shit on this. But I would just lay out the factual, historical information, and show what church leaders said over the centuries. It goes all the way back to Augustine and Jerome. Wikipedia has a good article on the Millerites, where the whole, pop version of the end of the world got started in the 1830s in upstate New York. If you've seen the episode of "the Simpsons" where they go to the mountain to wait for Jesus, it started with the Millerites (who are now called Adventists). Jehovah's Witnesses -- and their printing presses -- spread these ideas worldwide. But aside from the Baptists, this is not a widely held view among the major denominations.

Oh, we really ought to give Hal Lindsey a marketing award. He's written the same book 43 times, and people still keep buying it. He published "The Late Great Planet Earth" in 1972, and every book since then has been essentially the same material, reworked.

Earth Sorry if I reacted too strongly to what you said; I misread the context of it. I have this sort of love/hate thing for Dan Brown. If people approach him as just a fictional novelist, pulp fiction even, then I have no problem. But a lot of people (at least according to the news...fully a third of people) think that The Da Vinci Code is based on fact, and that bothers me both as a thinking person and as a Christian. I lump Brown in with the same fundies who scream "The end of the world is coming!!" and the people who believe Brown like Gospel as the same thoughtless people who think of the Left Behind series as Gospel. At the same time, if you approach it as entertainment, it's not too bad. Horrible writing, but engaging fictional story line. I also react pretty strongly when people act like a person can't be BOTH thoughtfully critical and a Christian. I was getting some of that from your post, though I can understand when you look at the way some Christians behave. Does more harm than good for the "image" of our religion. By the way...my wife bought me the book a long time ago, so I guess I indirectly contributed to the hack, too. Again, sorry for the overreaction. ps-damn :)

Oh...and I just had to share one other thing in general. I saw this story on the local morning news while I was getting ready for work and the anchor said something along the lines of "The people in Hell will probably have a heck of a party since this date only comes around once in a millenia." Once in a millenia. *sigh*.... (almost sadder is I spent a full minute trying to figure out if there was some sort of discernable difference between June 6, 1906, and June 6, 1006/2006)

Corky, The short answer is the best one: the key distinction of any Bible cult is that it's leader claims 'new revelation' or insight that no other believer has been privy to in the last 2,000 years. If a Christian believes that Scripture is complete, then how does a farmer in upstate New York suddenly claim new information? The cultist's claim is therefore inconsistent with Scripture. Therefore, you cannot trust anything else he has to say about Scripture. So all this tribulation stuff started out as somebody's personal idea, and then he went to Scripture to try and selectively find verses to support it. You can take any mangy thing you want and twist a verse or two out of context to justify it. That's why it's important to first look to the consensus body of apologetics, to see what others have written. Also read the dissent. My favorite example of how far people distort Scripture in this context is "the Rapture." The problem was that Christians had to get an escape route from "tribulation" but you couldn't have Jesus come back and fetch us, cuz that would be the 2nd Coming. So instead, people have concocted this thing about Jesus only getting to the clouds, and calling us up. It's like Jesus pulls into the driveway and honks the horn, but won't come into the house to fetch us. Drive-by Jesus!

Soooooo, back to the story, HELL, MI been there. It's a small community north of Ann Arbor, they pretty much survive on t-shits and coffee mugs, with "witty" little slogans about "I've been to Hell and back" and I drove through Hell". Now CLIMAX, MI also a short ride from Ann Arbor...that's a whole nother story...
Posted by 666 at 2006-06-05 02:15 PM | Reply | Flag: Flag: (Choose)FunnyNewsworthyOffensiveAbusive
LOL! Thanks, Vernon. My sentiments exactly. The Rapture requiring a THIRD Coming is pretty telling in itself.
Posted by Corky at 2006-06-05 02:29 PM | Reply | Flag: Flag: (Choose)FunnyNewsworthyOffensiveAbusive
If you read Timothy, Daniel and Ezekiel, you find references to the rapture. It isn't like some think, but it will happen. It isn't going to be Jesus pulling up in the drive way and honking, well maybe it will. He said," My sheep hear my voice and listen". The book of Revelation says clearly the one keeping the Anti- Christ from control will be removed from Earth. The one is Ruach HaKodesh-The Holy Spirit.Instead of criticizing the scriptures try READING THEM!!!!
