Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

In the early days of public wireless Internet access, food and drink choices were limited to coffee, scones and other typical cafe fare. Now you can get WiFi (wireless fidelity) with curry or a $100 glass of wine. [Houston Chronicle]

I've been seeing this for the past two years or so. Most places around my house, especially coffee places, have free wifi.

Municipal WiFi would be a great thing. It's too bad the "privatize everything" Republifundie whackjobs need to squeeze every nickle they can out of the working man.

Ok what is WiFi??

Larry

This is the most biazrre cluster of names I have ever read.......

Inci Akpinar
Unal Cevak
Veli Baysal
Masala Wok
Hitesh Sanghvi
????? They look more like anagrams

Inci Akpinar, 26, is a Houston architect who escapes the office for inspiration, as well. She visits DNR European Fast Food, which dishes up a flavorful beef-lamb mixture similar to the marinated meat in a gyro -- but sliced, not minced -- before it's layered and cooked.

Many tables and booths at this spacious and bright eatery are equipped with outlets. WiFi also is accessible from the patio.

Co-owner and manager Unal Cevak says it's "no problem" if customers linger. "They can stay for hours;" Have some free coffee, tea or ice cream, he says.

"Sometimes when you go to Starbucks, you don't find the space to sit," says Veli Baysal, 30, director of a Houston nonprofit organization. He dines at DNR almost daily.

Masala Wok, a small Texas chain of fast-casual restaurants with Indian and Indochinese dishes, opened in Houston in October. It attracts a mix of students, business-people and families, says manager Hitesh Sanghvi.

free hacking no charge....that should be the sign

Si.

Oui.

Free.

Willy.

All globally understood expressions.

Nothing is free at Starbucks!

Never been to a Starbucks, never will.

Coffee snobbs are as bad as beer snobs in my mind.

$5.00 for a cup of Java? I think not.

And the people, It's like high school all over againg, wanting to be seen there reading a newpaper or the latest novel.

What a joke.

Maxwell House. 4 scoops per 12 cups.
Natural Light Beer

"Natural Light"?? that does the same thing as Genny Screamers to me. :)

I just don't see any sence on paying high dollar for all those weird brews.

Guess I'm traditional that way. Raineer beer in college. Yummy and cheap.

A good Cohiba with a nice quality brandy once i a while is sure a nice treat though.

I agree. WiFi should be a 'free' public utility, operated by a huge army of government employees, and supported with taxes.

Then your online experience will have the same, smooth, efficient, courteous and fast service you've come to expect from the Post Office, DMV and other government-run services.

"courteous and fast service you've come to expect from the Post Office, DMV and other government-run services."

YEAH!
Even though I get a drivers license renewed thru the mail AND my mail delivered everyday at the same time.

Now if only the telephone and electric company would show up when they say they will.

You can't use "Natural Light" and "Beer" in the same sentence, except as a negative. Beer contains malt, hops, yeast and water. Period. God only knows what's in that other crap. And, if you're living in Ranier territory, there's lots of great stuff available to you. Life's too short to drink bad beer.

On topic, look out if you're out indulging in that free WiFi. There has been lots of laptop snatching here in the Bay Area at coffee joints and cafes.

Is that anything like the fabulous medical service provided by the private sector the last 20+years? Check out the new TIME magazine (you can remove the cover if the sight of the Dixie Chicks offendeth you). Fascinating article about outsourcing our medical care to India, Thailand and Singapore.

You would be amazed at how little a municipal WiFi service costs. One of my instructors put one together for the state of Michigan. In fact, he probably just finished (he started on it late last year).

Vernon is a typical Republifundie moron, who doesn't believe human beings are capable of anything. All hail our corporate masters, the only ones with any capability.

BTW, I don't know what kind of podunk area you live in, but around here the Post Office is pretty good, and the DMV has been (amazingly) excellent for the past several years.

"laptop snatching"

Quantum encryption; Rock on.

Yeah, like the private sector is doing such a great job providing broadband. That's why we are falling further behind our competitors, industrialized nations, every year.

The United States has fallen yet further behind in broadband penetration, falling to 16th place in the world from 13th last year and 11th the year before, according to new numbers from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
