MICHEL MARRIOTT: Tapping into someone else's wireless Internet connection is no longer just for computer geeks. Ordinarily upstanding people are tapping in too. [New York Times]

"Free wireless" is ham radio.
We've been here since Marconi.
Rock on.

The primary reason why I have 4 PCs in the house, wired hard line to the switch and router.

Regards,
etc.

Here's the longest range signal stealer around....unbeleivable...pulls in signals 3x farther away then any other:

Wait a minute-Ham Radio?

When did pigs get their own Radio Station?

Since radio stations.
Can you say Marconi?
I thought you could!!

Meh. If you want to pilfer wireless, use one of those "pringles can" antennas.

Someone did a roundup of different cans for an improvised antenna, I think the tall Chunky soup can was the best they tested.

That 'high gain' antenna is good if you want to throw your signal all over the place. If you are leaching, however, you want to keep it tight.

Most of wireless security is shaping the signals within the area covered so it doesnt 'leak' outside that area. A teacher I had for one of my tech classes is one of the best wireless guys in the country. We were pumping him for info one day =) I wanted to take his wireless class, but last I heard from him, he took on some huge municipal wireless rollout in another state.

I hated how the article states there is no way to measure how many people are connected to your wireless network. What router doesnt have some form of GUI or command to show the number of active connections?

newp, it's the Nalley's can that rocks...large chili baby.

Arrrrgggghhhhh! This mustbe Bush's fault! Or at least Cheney's! Special Prosecutor now!!1

Funny stuff I set up a wireless network for my Mother-In-Law. A week later her boyfriend called me to say he was having problems. So I looked into it. Somehow he had set it to connect to the neighboor and I guess they caught him and locked it down more. So here he was stealing when he had it in his own house.

Sometimes though just being polite is nice. Was testing a laptop for a customer for a couple weeks so went over to my neighbors who I knew had wireless and I was picking up a nice feed off. He said sure but it's locked down you can only do it if you can hack it and then show me how not to be hacked when your done.

2 weeks later I gave the laptop back and spent 20 min fixing his network.

Ah life can be good.

Zat,

I am thinking about getting into ham radioing. Every good signal officer needs to know something about it! Heard you can talk around the world off of 3 - 5 watts! I want to see that done! Looked at alot of good radios. Some as high as 1500 dollars. I like the ones with the signal amp meters. Looks good anyway! I dont feel safe enough to do this wireless thing...I think I will keep it coming from the wall for now!

I got my ham license when I was 13.
As for wireless, it isn't necessarily secure.

I know Zat....I just went through the signal officer's advanced course. All that radio wave thing was very interesting. We learned about UHF, VHF and Short wave radio's. Yes, I am going to sort of learn about ham and CB radio's. I have a 1000 channel scanner now that can dual trunk. The police freq's are hard to come by here as they use their trunking so no one can listen to them. They have some freqs we can listen to, just not the good ones!

"I dont feel safe enough to do this wireless thing..."

Why not? Change your connection name, insert a specific mac address and enable wep. The percentage of hackers who will blow off your connection with even two of those three procedures are incredibly high. But like any other lock, they'll only keep out the good guys. Even a home-based wired network isn't completey secure.

You cant compare over the air networking with wired. Wired is alot more secure, and I never said it was completly secure, and then again, nothing is....
