What will Canada do when some Islamist shows up and demands that Canada recognize his multiple wives? Polygamy has been practiced by Muslim societies for as long as the Hindus have been toting ceremonial daggers, if not a lot longer.
This, an article from the Ministry of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women,
might be of interest to those wondering about polygamy in Canada. It IS a problem currently and it is being monitored. Google "Bountiful British Columbia" for some sad and eye opening stories.
The practice is against the criminal code. It would require a successful charter challange to overturn it - and that does not preclude the government refashioning the law to conform to the charter if that did happen. As in the case of the kirpins, those advocating it is a religious necessity would have to demonstrate such, AND, that the well being of society's members was not unduly effected by it.
Again, there has never been an incident of a kirpin being used in any fashion. Again, giving up freedom for a sliver of supposed security is a fool's bargain.
Nicey? You can carry your bible into any school (as a student of course, or a parent of one, otherwise you would have to show permission for being there). You can read it without interference. You cannot preach, or interrupt the normal daily activity of the school.
Seems simple enough.
