Peter Benchley, whose novel Jaws terrorized millions of swimmers even as the author himself became an advocate for the conservation of sharks, has died at age 65, his widow said today. [Houston Chronicle]

Wow, right as shark week ends. Weird. I just watched him today talking about how the end of Jaws was changed from the book and how unhappy he was about it. Really weird.

On the other hand Kanrei, knowing how sick he was it might have been a little cynical, trying to time it to pick up on his potential passing with a subsequent shark week broadcast. They only missed it by a week it seems.

etc.

TPS,
Shark Week is this time every year for the past decade or so. Discovery channel produces shows unique to the week, so it would take alot of timing for that.

Anyway, this author has created something that scared me more than any Jason, Freddie, or Cheney hunting put together.

Shows you how much I watch television I guess. I haven't had cable or satellite hooked up for three years now I think.

Amen about being scared. I saw the movie from the front row of the theatre because those were the only seats left. Literally fountains of blood.

etc.

TPS,
Discovery, History, History International, Biography, A&E, Cartoon Network, Animal Planet. Think of all you are missing.

For example, I watched Mythbusters today take on Jaws. They proved a bullet will not make a scubatank blow up and a Great White cannot pull a boat, but it can pierce a boat if rammed and it can destroy a sharkcage.

Kanrei- you forgot Food Network.

I think about it....never. 99% a waste of your brain to be frank. And I keep the crap out of my kids heads too.

Your example is more ironic than you might first think.

Regards,
etc.

It's out there in the water...waiting. Nature's most fearsome predator. The seaside community of Amity is at its mercy. A small-town police chief, a marine biologist, and a modern-day Ahab must try to stop it. But they are only three men...alone against the Great White Death.

Jaws had me scared of the water for ten years........

And the book was scarier than the movie......RIP, Benchley.....

My cousins and I watched Jaws while we were in the Moab community swimming pool. It was an annual summer even.

Very scary indeed..........

even= event

We wnet snorkeling off Hawaii last summer and spotted a Tiger shark 40 yards from us. I hate sharks.

"And the book was scarier than the movie......"

Interesting; I didn't care for the book all that much. I didn't like any of the characters (in fact, in the end, I was rooting for the shark). The screenplay was great, though. RIP, Peter.

it took someone as good as john williams to express that impending doom and fear with just a couple of notes.

and hawk....I think that the spielberg treatment had as much to do as the screenplay......
