This guy claims the entire Cartoon imbroglio was ginned up by Muslim fascists.

Those involved in taking a four-month-old incident in far-away Denmark and making it into a crisis roiling the streets of Beirut, Bangkok and Jakarta among other Muslim outposts, include Arab League Secretary Amr Moussa, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Mosque Sheikh Mohammad Sayyed Tantawi, and Sunni Islam's most influential scholar, Yusuf al Qaradawi, according to Lorenzo Vidino of the Counter Terrorism Blog.

These are very heavy hitters in the umma, the world community of Muslims.

Two questions raise themselves about this crisis manufactured by a who's who in the world of Islam: Why was a plan created and put into effect? And why now?

I had NO IDEA this cartoon was originally from four months ago.

The Danish editor who printed the cartoons was on CNN this morning. He tried to show examples of cartoons which his paper had printed in the past that made fun of Jews and Christians. They briefly showed a cartoon of a bomb with the Star of David painted it on, but quickly cut away from the cartoon which looked like it depicted Jesus. I am so annoyed at CNN that I think I will write them a letter. The female anchor was asking the editor questions about free speech and claims that the paper was insensitive to Muslims, but when he tried to make his case, they refused to show his examples. This Sunday the Danish paper plans to run a series of cartoons, which they ran in the past, about Christianity and Judaism. Let's see how much coverage those photos get in the West and in the Muslim world.

I can understand Muslims being upset about the fake cartoons they were shown: Mohammed having sex with an animial; Mohammed portrayed as a pedophile and the Prophet depicted as a pig. I don't believe most Muslims are violent or that Islam is an inherently violent religion. However, moderate Muslims, the silent majority of them, should realize that that is the face of Islam in much of the modern world. If they want to change that misconception, they need to speak up against the violent protests.

If you cannot handle issues stemming from the free world, you shouldn't leave your totalerian country and should return back to the middle east in a controled setting they yearn for.

If you were the US President and your advisors are telling you another country threatens the National Security of the US, presents the facts as they show it, what do you do?

You are not a part of the intelligence community. You are a politician who has just been handed information that's a threat. What do you do?

The people in the business of intelligence have been doing it for years and years. It's their profession. You're a politician who has no idea where these countries are on the planet. You rely on the experts' advice and try to the best thing based on the advice.

Anyone who isn't the President can't make that call. The President receives information no one else is going to see, except Congress and even then the doors could be closed to the public.

If Iran is a threat to the National Security of the US, we act. As before, the UN has a chance to engage in this. Bush went to the UN over Iraq. Iraq was a UN issue for many many years. How many threats did they make to Iraq to comply? What was the threat for failure to comply? The UN sat on their hands. If you're the President, do you sit on your hands, too?

101 - I would be perfectly happy leaving them to their own devices and having minimal contact with them. Let them chant all they want if it makes them happy. And yes, we need to purchase oil from them but they're always willing to sell regardless of what else is going on.

The problem is that they increasingly seem to feel it is their duty to monitor our behavior and to make sure we're following Sharia. And in Western countries, the local Muslims now seem to expect us to bend their beliefs. That is when you have to reply to their threats and acts of violence with violence. The more leash they're given, the more bold they become. Violence is the only thing that will trump their religious beliefs. They scream jihad-jihad and that they're willing to die for Islam but they were still smarter than to fuck with a guy like Saddam. They respected him more than their religion. Iraqis were willing to quietly practice their religion before we toppled Saddam.

So I think more effective than randomly killing the chanters would be to take the ringleaders of facist Islam living in the West to a remote location and beat them to within an inch of their lives every day for a month. Then let them go. Then they would respect the local laws and customs of the country they chose as their new homes or they'll go home. What they would stop doing is starting trouble in our streets. I could really care less if they want to behave like animals in their own countries.

I'd listened to the Danish editor of the newspaper that published the cartoons yesterday on CSPAN and he had explained this- later on I heard it somewhat described on Keith Oberman MSNBC show. Of course Fox also had some info on it including how one of the 3 faked cartoons that was used to show those in the Middle East how offensive all of these were was actually a French picture of a man with a pig nose on having nothing to do with any of it. Another words these guys were just looking for anything to make an issue out of. Why?

Maybe because it will be Denmark who takes charge of the UN Security Council during its debate on Iran ?

Remember the recent trip to Damascus by the Iranian President? Perhaps 3 or 4 weeks ago. Now think back at where the first demonstrations began in the middle east. First of all, we gain nothing out of our unconditional support of Israel. We're fighting two wars in the region with zero Israeli troops helping. I know, I know, we "can't" use them. It is not the job of the US government to worry about Israel. If we're going to give billions in way in welfare every year, give it to Americans. GZ - You made some decent points about the sharing of intelligence, tactics and technology between us and Israel. But that can be done on an equal footing instead of us having to donate billions every year on top of the sharing that goes on.

As for you assertion that we profit in some way by giving away billions to Israel every year - that's crap. Not nearly as much as you hinted is spent on American products. And even if all of it were used that way, it still is not efficient to tax Americans, give the money to foreigners, and then have them by goods off us. Its a waste of our money for a purpose that our government was never intended to fulfill. I'm against taxing Americans and giving our money away to foreigners in general. It NEVER buys us the good will that its proponents claim it does.

And the points you made about Israelis not wanting us dictating their business are valid. If they stop taking our money, then we'd have no reason to expect to have any input. Oh and someone asked about the Danes response to the riots over the cartoons.
The businesses aren't happy. They are losing lots of money. The Government Is trying to find wiggle room without apoligizing for the news paper. And the Danish people are just going about their daily lives without any noticable outrage.
They did a pole today on the local news, asking if the government should apoligize for the news paper and it was about 50/50.

Jeff these ARE fascists. These aren't just Muslims and if I said that I would be a racist but I never have said that nor do I believe that for a second. I guess what it boils down to is that there are a lot of open sores out there. I think I'm entering a period of resignation. On one level, human society is a fucked up mess. On another level, it manages to hold together in peaceful harmony and produce an abundance of wealth. That's where I try to position myself. Yeh, we're looking at war and depression. The violent reactions on the part of the Muslims have many even here on this liberal minded website predisposed to vilifying the Muslim world. These events have polarized the West and Moslem worlds like no other since 911.

The president didn't manufacture the incident, but put little doubt in your mind that he will take full advantage of if and when it comes time to invade Iran.

10% of the 1.8 million muslim population is radical. Meaning they want to see Israel wiped off the map and America burn like scattered pieces of firewood. That translates to over 180,000 radical muslims. That number alone should scare any breathing human.

I appreciate your point and I am not immune to the real concern and worry I have about the future. I share some of them too.

That being said it is rhetoric like yours that has me concerned. I don't think you are a warmongerer, and my point here is not to characterize as such. It is just that your post represents a great deal of the tone and langauge used by many these days on both sides of the political fence.

These recents events are begining to polarize the West and the Islamic world in a way that even goes beyond the events of 911.

When this happens dialogue and diplomacy begin to shut down. I fear that all out war becomes inevitable because ALL involved begin to filter out any other possibility. Why talk to them when they is no doubt heard in the Starbucks of this country and the mosques of Islamic nations.

In order to set the stage for war we have to see the adversary as a single unit, a single massive threat to our lives. This is what we have begun to do. As we do this we squeeze out the voice of individuals and disregard the complexities of events for simple black and white statements found in cartoons among other places.

Such an environment makes it much easier for a desperate or politically troubled or inept leader to commit his people to a military conflict.

My real concern is that two years from now the daily body count of U.S. soldiers from Iran will catch up with the ongoing count from Iraq. The american people will then look back at the events of early 2006 and think if those filled body bags and wonder how we allowed ourselves to get into all of this.

First: As you can read in the article this was a set up. Did you notice the PRINTED signs were in English -obviously directed at international consumption.

Syria has been under a lot of pressure INSIDE the muslim community due to its execution of the ex- minister of Lebanon that was tracked back to Assads brother. Iran has been under stress internally and externally due to the radical they put in charge. This was a way to deflect the pressure away from themselves and back at the US. This has been the strategy in the middle east for quite some time.

This is why changing the political structure in the middle east is so important.

As to body bags and how we got here - the political groups in charge in the middle east - from Hammas to Saud to Saddam all use to gen up hatred toward the west to deflect issues. We have 3000 body bags from the towers to prove it.

You wonder why we get so upset at the bad mouthing of Bush and the arm chair QBing on Iraq? It is because it is used to feed directly into the hands of Middle East power brokers and against the US. If it would stop for just a little bit the whole atmosphere would change.

Frankly I don't believe we're hearing enough of my tone .. the entire cartoon controversy was manufactured and we know this now ... we know these so called demonstrations taking place in countries where no demonstration can take place without government sanctions are being coordinated for nafarious reasons - certainly not for anything benevolent.

The problem it seems to me are our apologists who want to perceive all Muslims as violent and angry. Its a racist approach and certainly not one I ascribe to. The most interesting thing I see is how many will completely disregard what I've been writing - differentiating between those so called Muslims that have literally hijacked Islam, and moderate Muslims who are keeping a very low profile praying all of this disappears - and paint me as some Muslim hater which is complete nonsense. Those who would try and make people believe that all Muslims are one in the same are the racists and are using very the ones using dangerous rhetoric.
Those fomenting the street violence are no different the Hitler's brownshirts and must be stood up to.

We got into all of this because we assumed that the Muslim world values freedom as much as we do.

Consider these well known words:

We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

It is the self-evident part that is so foundational to Western society, particularly American. The problem is that the rights are not self-evident. If they were it wouldn't have taken 2000 years of Western history to codify them. You hear our president say it. "Freedom, they hate our Freedom." No they don't; they just don't value it the way we do. This just doesn't compute in the western mind because this is "self evident." These are basic assumptions that we forget are assumptions.

The Islamic world values piety over freedom. Personal freedoms take a backseat to what it believes is divine law. Islam is very rational but it will only seem so to us if we understand what their basic premise is.

Don't get me wrong. I talk about dialogue and diplomacy and I really don't have a clue as to how we should begin.

I do know, however, that forcing someone to accept someone else's' cultural values is unethical. That is what a great many Muslim wish to do with the West. They can't understand why we will not accept the divine word of God when it is so clear what He requires of us--submission through obedience to the Koran. To them it is self evident and we are irrational.

Exactly, and thank God he did (a bit of an attempt at ironic humor there), and I say this as a practicing Catholic.

For Franklin, a product of the enlightenment, these rights were the product of rational thought. Yet, we should not forget that they were a product of western rational thought. Contrary to popular belief, rational thought does not always lead to the same conclusions. It all depends on where you begin--the assumptions or premises to your arguments.

Where Western thought, at least in Aristotelian models, begins with knowledge gained through experience, Islam begins in a very different place. It begins with knowledge revealed through a theophany--the Koran.

We should not wonder that it ends up somewhere very different either.

And Grendel, just as in 'Nam, we have invoked our world view to predict the behavior of those who do not share it. Nonetheless, the physical world works the same for everyone. The Catholic Church has outgrown the Inquisition and now contributes to astronomy where they once jailed Galileo. Other religions are not so enlightened.

Also another good point. The debate between faith and reason, revelation and experiential knowledge has been at odds with each other for millenia in the West. The church has ever sought to reconcile the two and in the ensuing debate has grown from it.

What was perceived as a conflict turned into something useful and important to both areas. Unfortunately, there were casualities along the way, real casualties, not just metaphorical ones. Still, I think we have ended up in a pretty good place with the promise of greater work ahead.

What I think the problem with Islam is that the Koran is considered the exact word of God, rather than inspired by God as in Scripture. Despite what fundamentalist Christians say when scripture is "inspired" it demands interpretation. The collective thinking is ever seeking to answer the question "What does God mean here?" It is a search for meaning. Aside from some dogmatic principles, basic premeises, much of it is open ended. Theology as a discipline expands thought and the faith of the individual and the whole church.

If a text is considered the exact words of God, as in Islam, the demand is not interpretation but simple obedience and submission. Religion is not a search for meaning or a relationship with some kind of ultimate reality, it is the basis for conduct. Islam tells us not what to think as much as how to act. It is preoccupied with alw. As such, the assumption that these are the exact words of God render the Koran a closed text. There is not much there to expand on in regard to theology; in fact, Islamic theology is a very small discipline.

I have enjoyed the conversation. I don't know what happend to make my last few post little more than aborted efforts.
