John Ward Anderson, Steve Fainaru, Jonathan Finer: After 31 months of fighting in Iraq, more than half of all American fatalities are being caused by powerful roadside bombs that blast fiery, lethal shrapnel into the cabins of armored vehicles, confronting virtually every patrol with an unseen, menacing... Last throes are around the corner, so be happy!
Bs esides, 2000 American lives are a small price to pay for saving America from theimminent WMD holocost Saddam was 45 minutes from launching. At least, that's what the ayatollahs in Tehran and Texas want us to believe.

Somebody has been reading their history, the Vietcong and NVA did the exact same thing to us with booby traps.
Charlie Company 1/25th was so destroyed and demoralized by the attacks they attribute them to a leadin cause for the Mei Lei massacre.
The booby traps could slow down troop movements to a virtual crawl and increase combat stress a hundred fold.

"You don't fight the guerilla army you want. You fight the guerilla army you get."

you beat me to it NG3...i was gonna call em Last Throes Bombs

Let's call them Lefty Glee Bombs.

Y'all act like you are talking about your best pal here.

And you are.

Hey Nice; Bush picked a pro-choicy for SCOTUS! Talk about your basic IED!

Blame Syria!

The end of that story is one of the most sickening anecdotes I've read about this war.

What a mess.

Niceville is the only puke sick enough around here to try to make it look like anyone would be happy that 19 year old kids are getting blown apart.

Oh well. It just goes to show what kind of person nicey is. Blindly follow idiots, then make the most offensive type of accusation possible to defend the idiots he follows.

Sick. Sick. Sick.

Nice: I thought you Xians were big martyr fans?
Wasn't that why Bush didn't send enough troops to seal the borders, so he could create more martyrs? I'm sure it wasn't do to stupidity, was it?

My God. Those poor soldiers that were put there for Bushco's personal agenda of revenge.

May God watch over and protect them.

I guess Bush got his wish to "bring em on".

Welcome to guerilla warfare. As if nobody in the military knew this situation would happen. Like, say, Eric Shinseki.

Or, as was the case with 9/11, nobody in BushCo knew (or cared) that it was a problem. But that's because they are all idiots.

from grunt.com:

What the Viet Cong (VC) and the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) lacked in the way of firepower they made up for in ingenuity. Concealed devices used to inflict casualties, booby traps were an integral component of the war waged by Viet Cong and People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) forces in Vietnam. These devices were used to delay and disrupt the mobility of U.S. forces, in fact, the threat was often enough to slow any advance to a snail's pace, divert resources toward guard duty and clearance operations, inflict casualties, and damage equipment. They were a key component in prearranged killing zones. Booby-traps could be covered by snipers to further annoy the enemy or they might be the signal to spring an ambush.

The use of booby traps also had a long-lasting psychological impact on Marines and soldiers and helped to further alienate them from civilian populations that could not be distinguished from combatants. The fear of booby-traps and mines was so great that units in the field (the boondocks) and the jungle (the zoo) were under stress the whole time. This created severe mental fatigue on both the commanders at platoon level and the individual soldiers.

When I was in the Infantry in the 70's, we were all taught this, so if the low level grunts knew how guerilla warfare was waged, how come Rummy et al didn't know?

Maybe we can get BL2 on this thread to explain how well the natyion building program is progressing in Iraq. Viable democracy my ass.

The idea that the last throes of the insurgency IS still thinking on their feet, and changing the way it is bombing our boys, should scare the living shit out of these Bush apologists...

We need an exit strategy and some "truth"...How in hell is it possible that we have only been able to train ONLY one battalion that is considered ready to stand on it's own...How...what in hell is the military doing over there?

RCADE's remark about the last paragraph...I'm counting my blessings

Yeah, and let's hope Israel gets its oil pipeline from Iraq - that would make it all worthwhile, too.

Is it just me or is anbody else getting tired of taking it in the ass for Israel?

I'm tired of the politicians ignoring the majority of people who want it to stop!

Paleo: I understand they are going to announce the pipeline at the opening of Iraq's Embassey in Tel Aviv.
According to Achmed Chalabi, and I know he wouldn't lie.

The Iranians imported a team of bomb makers from Lebanon who had the expertise to deploy these armor piercing bombs, and that report is two months old.

What distresses me is that it is our diplomatic errors, the economic instability imposed by Bremer and Asscoiates, that have opened the door to this situation. And now it's the guys on the ground who will pay the price for those errors.

The neo-Con fantasy is slowly becoming a nightmare, and it's time for America to wake up.

AGGIE, a lot of us have (or never went to sleep to begin with), but the awakening process can take very long in a country in which 51 percent of people believe an invisible being snapped his fingers and we blinked into existance - a cosmic-scale I Dream of Jeannie, if you will.

Just look at Nice, BL2 and BT as examples of people who still defend Bush and his policies even in the face of utter failures.

Eva,

If I'm not mistaken, 75% of this country is Christian. Therefore 75% of people believe an invisible being snapped his fingers and we blinked into existance

No, I am what you would call a Christian but there is no way I would ever believe the snapped fingers and we are there.

There were snapped fingers and evolution began so to speak.

Money,

I agree with you on this one.

School me, JEFF; If one is a Christian, does that automatically mean said person believes in creation? Is there latitude in the text? Can you be a Christian and believe in evolution? Is intelligent design mentioned in the bible at all?

The common conception, or misconception if you will, is that ID is the middle-ground (i.e. more palatable) position of the hardcore creationists.

Eva,

Not trying to nitpick. I make a basic assumption that Christians believe in God. It's not too much of a stretch to conclude that belief in God equates to a belief in ID as to the origins of the universe. That said, I will cede that my logic was flawed, which is why I put the flaw in bold.

But on topic - there must be a better way to fight this war and secure these hot zones in Iraq. Don't tell me that this is just "how it is," and that we cannot secure these areas after we take them. 'Cause right now, it seems as if we're just driving around waiting for IEDs to go off. Taking cities and then moving on as the insurgents slither back in to await our next sortie.

Jeff, what I mean, in all respect, is that I'm truly interested to learn if the bible contains any allegation to support the idea of ID. Pardon my metaphor about the snapping of fingers, but I find it disconcerting that so many Americans are of the "wide eyed" variety. This is to mean that there is a disparity between the 51 percent and the rest of the Christian population - the former scare me, and this particular stat to me does a lot to explain Bush's "mandate."

Bill Maher put it pretty good, in that it seems we just put a bunch of a guys in a truck send them up the street to see if they blow up.

Its like this was a game of starcraft except our troops are being controlled by the AI :/

(yeah don't run too far with the "starcraft" analogy).....

The AI in Starcraft was actually good. It was actually too good at times.

Knight, I liken it more to the first time you play Halo - you run around trying to figure out what the mission objective is, while the AI troops with you just tend to get smoked. At least I read the Halo walkthroughs and tips before beginning the mission.

Is it just me or is anbody else getting tired of taking it in the ass for Israel?

You know, I think a lot of people in the Mideast are unhappy with us American infidels.

Now just ask yourself. Who could have made them unhappy?

No need to field any significant ground force, hold any military objective, or even maintain jihadist "boots on the ground." Just conduct low level assymetric warfare employing IED's and isolated stand off attacks by fire, exact sensationalist casualties on relatively undefended or transient targets (ensuring as much media coverage as possible). The decadent American infidels eventually will leave with tails tucked. They lack the stomach for war and miss their Starbucks.

If the troops weren't there, they wouldn't be getting killed. Withdraw now, put bush on trial for war crimes next to saddam.
