These Black folks didn't look like they were "looting" to me. They looked like they were "surviving." I got caught in downtown L.A. early in the evening of the Rodney King riots. As I had been to a doctor's appt., and always carry a camera with me, I parked about three blocks away in front of a closed furniture store and walked up to the main boulevard where the firemen were putting out a fire started by some of the crowd. The main riot to take place later that night was just beginning. Across the street looters were pushing entire clothes racks out of stores, and taking everything they could get their hands on, particularly tape recorders, electronic equipment, cameras, that sort of stuff. There was one cop who drove by and he was going about 90 mph thru the crowd that was gathering on both sides and I don't blame him. If he had stopped his patrol car probably would have been mobbed.

I took a bunch of photos and two guys who only spoke Spanish wanted to take my camera because they thought I was taking pictures to use against them. Two guys who had been standing nearby stuck up for me, and I was yelling "No policia, no policia" pointing at myself to tell them I wasn't a cop. They backed off and let me keep my camera and I did get some good shots. Then a car drove by and fired a gunshot in the air and everybody who had been around on the streets dove on the other side of a four foot wall.

I decided that maybe it was time to get the hell out of there as it was late afternoon (and at that time no one had any idea how bad it would get later on). When I got back to my car three blocks away, there were streams of people coming out of the previously locked and soon to be empty furniture store where I parked my car. They were stealing everything they could carry -- television sets, coffee tables, whatever they could get their hands on. THEY WERE LOOTERS.

All you needed to do is look at these Black folks today and what they were carrying - SHOES, DIAPERS, FOOD, WATER. I didn't see expensive electronic equipment, furniture, or anything like I saw in a real looting situation. These people were carrying stuff out of stores that the owner was not going to be able to come back to for months, they took shoes for their feet, diapers for their babies and I saw some carrying bottled water. That is "survival" stuff, not "loot" - big difference. If I was going to be stuck down there for at least a month and had nothing but the clothes on my back I might have been tempted to "borrow" some survival items myself.

Don't judge this situation unless you've been in it yourself, and none of us have.

I've been so busy I forgot tonight was "DKIA's TUESDAY JOKE NIGHT." Oh well, next week I guess.

Since most of the tele stations are recording the same visuals of blacks looting jewelry and televisions and furniture -- I think it's a fair assumption that the majority of the looting is by blacks.

NOW -- if you have a problem with the truth of the situation -- I would say you're probably a liberal/leftie who is convinced the "politically correct" words will change their hearts and minds.

The big picture on all this is not a good one and we need to do all we can to assist these people.

Sending funds to relief organizations has been stated to be the best way. DO NOT just show up they are saying to volunteer.

The only valid part of this post that I saw that could be true is the way the media reports the race of individuals involved in crimes. I live in Delaware. (Not many know that is even a state - it borders PA, MD, and NJ.) Some winters we have no snow, some winters we have a teeny tiny bit. And when there's one inch of snow on the street they actually cancel school. There have been two significant snowfall years since I moved here in '96.

I grew up in a small town in upstate NY, Rome (home of Woodstock '99, rock on). I used to love it up there, because when there was a major storm there was only "finding" and never any "looting."

Now I live in Jersey... where there is only "looting" and very little "finding." I miss home :(

After class last night I walked into a Penn Station (hot sub/sandwhich place) I was by myself as it was near closing. Minutes before closing a black guy walks in, sees the looters on CNN and says, "Shit man, those niggas is crazy, why they wastin dey time wit clothes and food? I'd rob a fucking jewelry store? When I first saw the pictures, I thought it was abhorrent racism, but if you examine their sources, you see that they are from different news sources. One editor may have the opinion (rightfully so) that taking needed food is ok, and can be equated to "hunting and gathering", thus the "finding" attributed to the caption. The other editor may take a harder view that everyone who takes items without paying is a looter (again, a strictly correct view, though the circumstances warrent it). Had the two pictures been from the same source, racism would be hard to deny, and some explination would be warrented. As it is, it is a humorous and unfortunate comparison.
