An Arkansas mother is being charged with misdemeanor child endangerment after making her son walk 4.6 miles to school in 30 degree weather because he'd been suspended from riding the bus. Valerie Borders, 34, faces up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. When police were called, the boy reportedly told an officer, "Please don't take me home. Mother will beat me."

hell, I use to walk a mile to school when i was his age. Walked even longer in high school.

ok, 30 degrees is a bit much

When I was in elementary school in PA there was no school bus service within the city limits. If you lived in town you walked. On the worst of winter days we got a ride from dad, the rest of the time we walked, up hill, both ways.

Gimme a fucking break,...where I grew up the winter temps were always below freezing...never saw a bus till I was in high school, and it was for the kids that lived out of town at lake houses etc...and when I say below freezing..I mean -30c not 30f.

Ahhh, the progressive utopia.

She should go to jail for naming him "Naquavion", or whatever it was. But not for this.

is someone gonna start a music thread already? I tried but I already used up my 2 posts. Here's one of mine from this week "inspired" by this kid's abuse by the PIGs.

Having lived in a warmer climate, 30 degrees was cold.

And still is.

30 Degrees is no big deal, but 4.6 miles is.

If that is one way you're looking at about a four hour walk per day.

For a 10 year old?

The speed of a brisk walk is about 4 miles per hour. It would only take him 4 hours if he were shuffling his feet the whole way.

The officer took the boy to his mother’s workplace, only to be told she was on vacation. They found her at home, where she was cited for child endangerment.

“There were a number of things that could have happened to the child,” said Lyle Waterworth, a spokesman for the Jonesboro Police Department. “The child could have been injured, abducted.”

sounds like the kid was abducted

was should be WAS

My sister and I rode our bikes about 2.5 miles one way every day for 4 years. We went through fields back then.

But of course Imperial Beach has a lot better climate than 30 degrees.

I understand the mother's point --he got in trouble and kicked off the school bus.

One day would suffice for getting the message--and she could have drove him to within a mile of the school, dropped him off and probably gotten the point across. (Then follow until the child got to the school without being seen).

Didn't you watch the video till the very end? He said that next time he gets on a bus he will "sit down and shut up"! Holy cow, isn't that what you fucks are hoping Obama voters choose to do rather than vote?

When I was a kid in New England we walked. It was @2.5 miles , there was no bus. Here is a parent trying to teach the little shit a lesson and now she's in trouble! Your not alowed to beat the kids ass any more what else can you do?
This is why kids run into trouble these days no disipline.Shit if your going to get a year in jail, might as well take a strap to his ass.

Sorry, but it ain't the same out there now as it was "back in the day." Or even just 20 years ago.

While age 10 is an older child, it's still not safe for a 10 year old boy to walk ALONE for 5 miles to go to school. The chill in the weather isn't the issue as much as the fact the little boy was ALONE during the entire 5 mile walk.

You've also got a lot of heavy traffic in the morning and there aren't always safe sidewalks lining the entire way for kids to walk on. And what about local gang members maybe picking on him since he was by himself. Don't think a ten year old kid walking alone wouldn't be vulnerable to getting jumped.

And how many stories -- over and over again -- have we heard of where a child was walking ALONE somewhere never to be seen or heard from again.

Perverts are always on the lookout for some vulnerable kid who's walking on his own with no one else around.

The school should have meted out another type of punishment if he was acting up on the bus, but they should not have taken school bus transporation away from this child if only for obvious safety reasons.

And as for the mother...

I don't know how she could relax and not worry the entire time knowing her child was walking for 5 miles with no other child or adult along to help if something happened to him along the way. Someone needs to smack her upside the head.

When I was a kid in New England we walked. It was @2.5 miles , there was no bus..."

You made my point with your use of the word "WE"

Were you with a couple other kids and/or siblings when you walked to and from school or did you always walk those 2.5 miles totally alone?

Sometimes,Still the kid seems to need an ass whipping .His first statement "don't tell my mom or she'll beat me". He knew dam well that was only said to get her in trouble. That's the way kids think these days. And sexual predators have always been around ,it's the constant news that makes it seem like they lurk around evey corner.

Bring a civil case against the Judge for failing to walk his dog. Claim animal cruelty.

If education is compulsory then funded transportation
for ALL students should be provided if they live across
town or across the street from their zoned school.

And yeah, times have changed and population has increased
and there are many more weirdos out there.

No child should have to walk to school these days. Gov't
says they must attend then gov't must provide transport
for them.
:)

4.6 miles is a little far. I can understand the mother's point and certainly walking is a good lesson for him. Definite over reach on the point of the cops too.

This is a little town in Arkansas, population 66k. How many real gangs do you think exist in this little town? Plus it's Jonesboro, the kid was probably safer walking to school than actually at school...

Definitely an overreach by the police. I hope the city drops the charges.

Thanks to google maps I found out it was 3.4 miles from my old house to my junior school. Depending on what time I woke up I'd often just walk to school, and many times it was colder than 30 degrees.

You can make all the "uphill in the snow both ways" jokes you want but that walk only took me about an hour, and that's if I was screwing around on the way. Everyone who thinks this is excessive is, frankly, just being a pussy. On many days another 1.2 miles sure woulda made it suck; but that's kinda the point. It is supposed to be a punishment. For the cops to even have noticed the kid he must have been dragging his ass hardcore and been past truant time.

Yea the child was abducted alright, abducted by "Mo Fukin PIGs". Like the grabbed him and fucking over his mom? wow how to influence young minds - winning the future - WTF!

I have to disagree. In my experience, adults walk about 3 mph. 4 mph is really pushing it. A kid walking more than that, alone, is over the top.

I remember the time my feet got numb in kindergarten I walked to a friends house down by the school but got my feet wet and on the way home they were so cold that I must have shuffled at about 1/2 mph for an hour or two. But NFW was that the situation for this kid. If he was really dragging his ass the cop coulda given him a ride told him to go and ask the bus driver for another chance after school (like written him a note to pass along or something too). But nope, just a MoFo PIG this time.

Why was the boy suspended? No mention in typical shit journalism. Authorities created the problem they want to hold the mother responsible for. 30 degrees is nothing, but proper clothes and shoes are required. 4.6 miles is not something Americans are used to, but common for Africans and partying Tongans.

#32 and common for "bad asses" in the USA.

Ah gee and I thought I had it rough dodging saber tooth tigers, dire wolves and falling chunks of glacier ice to walk to school

#34 Oh hi Little Black Sambo!

I walked to school in zero degrees weather, big fucking deal. These kids are pussies. The Muslims will kick their ass.

The average person walks 3 mph. Given the delays at intersections, the distance, and the age....

About 3.5-4 hours of walking per day in 30 degree weather.

And this is in Arkansas where people are not prepared, dressed, or used to the cold.

Syco, 9 miles would only be 3 hours at 3mph. So 1.5hrs each way if it were only 3 mph, but kids like him do walk 4 to 5 mph no problem, so it only be an hour each way plus time resting at lights (further increasing his walking spead - adding burst of running).

Child endangerment is really pretty extreme. I had to walk every day 2 miles to school when I was 8 or 9. Sometimes it was in the snow. 4.6 miles is a bit extreme, but whatever. She should have just gotten a warning and had CPS come and check on them to make sure she wasn't otherwise endangering him. Here is a good case where a little "Don't do that, and we'll be checking up on you," would go a long way. Adults don't always make good decisions, but that doesn't mean they should be treated as criminals.

It's a shame that Abe Lincoln didn't have government programs like CPS, EBT etc. to protect him growing up who knows what he might have achieved

I think this is a good way to teach the child a lesson, but carried out in the wrong way. Since the mother was home anyway, she should have walked with the child the whole way. Kids don't like walking 5 miles to school either way when there is a bus available. The kid would get the message whether his mom was with him for safety reasons or not.

#41 even better if his mom "walking him" embarrassed him. Instead he seems prettty smug - and should be. He's showed the world he CAN walk it while also revealing the racist pigs are out to fuck his mom.

I don't know that she should be charged with anything, but making a 10-year-old kid walk that far alone in 30 degree weather is crazy. Jonesboro is a city of 67,000 people. It's not Mayberry.

Good grief, some of you must walk like snails. Not to mention lazy as hell, no wonder most of this country is fat.

This, reiterated.

And what's so wrong about 4 hours a day walking? Not only is 30 degrees NOTHING if you're walking and even partially properly bundled up, it's supposed to be a punishment. "Oh no, I have to get up earlier and don't get to play my PS3 as long, maybe I should think twice before I act like a prick on the bus."

As for the distance, so what? Your average child's soccer game includes two miles of RUNNING. Unless this kid is physically handicapped or just so damned lazy he can barely walk, he was dragging his ass intentionally. Unless you were a pussy as a child, you coulda done it without hardly breaking a sweat.

Turned? Public schools have always been about regimenting the unwashed masses for their careers as capitalist wage-slaves.

Get a fuckin life, Nulli. Even socialist countries control the school systems. No doubt, you are a product of one.

Don't be so sensitive, Ray. It looks like a good video. The state will inevitably get more repressive as capitalism at the end of empire lurches from one crisis to another.

Yeah, but you probably had the GOOD coal. All we ever got was the high-sulfur coal. Smelled bad and tasted worse.

And we wore shards of glass for shoes and our coats were made of lead. Damn, those things were heavy.

Agreed. if he ran a paltry 10 minute mile, he could've been to school in under 50 minutes.

Ahhh, the progressive utopia.

Arkansas is a progressive utopia? Where the fuck do you post from, Somolia? Buttfuckistan? I bet you figure the Klan was integrated, and only wore the robes so folk wouldn't get distracted by the various skin colors.

Moron.

I would have no problem with this woman making her son take the walk if she walked with him. She was on vacation and should have made the journey with him. 4.6 miles is not chump change. That is a long walk on ten year old legs.

But the 30'F weather means nothing to this Mainer. Hell, if the Sun's out, that's T Shirt and shorts weather up here.
