Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Two Washington state cops have purchased plots next to Josh Powell's young sons to prevent him from being buried next to the boys he murdered. "The bottom line is, Josh Powell will not be near those two boys," Pierce County Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Troyer told a radio station Weddnesday. Troyer and Sheriff Paul Pastor used their own money and funds from Crime Stoppers Tacoma-Pierce County to pay for plots at Woodbine Cemetery in Puyallup, Wash.

Fine, up the point where we're told: "Troyer and Sheriff Paul Pastor used their own money and dipped into funds from Crime Stoppers Tacoma-Pierce County to pay for plots two and four at Woodbine Cemetery in Puyallup, Wash. Troyer is executive director of the Crime Stoppers branch."

While I appreciate the motivation, that doesn't sound legal exactly. Anybody know for sure?

Frankly, Hag, I don't understand the motivation. The guy's dead. I'm pretty sure this stops him from hurting the boys any more.
If the family doesn't have a problem with the plots, I really don't see why the police should.

It looks like they did have a problem with it:

"The Coxes had threatened to move the boys' casket if Josh Powell were interred nearby."

Meanwhile social services everywhere are still struggling to keep up with the case loads.

I am sure they could have used the donation.

Yup. Way to lean forward Washington state.

Oops. Wrong family.
Sorry, Hag. My bad.

*a nod of acknowledgement in your general direction.

While it may make some people feel better, it really doesn't do much. Dead is dead.

Headline should read "Cops so overpaid they can throw $5000 into a hole in the ground"

I won't fault the cops here. That story was so horrific that I can't blame anyone for trying to distance that sick bastard, even dead, from those kids. Sure, it's only symbolism, but as we all know, sometimes symbolism gives us solace.

How incredibly stupid.

Dead. They're dead. It doesn't matter if they grind them all up to goo and flush them down the same toilet. It doesn't make the slightest bit of difference to them who is next door at this point.

Not that I'd expect any sense out of cops. But I hope everyone who was thinking of donating money to this stupid "crime stoppers" fund finds an actual worthy cause to give it to.

It makes a difference to their family members who come to pay their respects.

Why do people have funeral services for people who have died? Why do family members buy and maintain plots for their loved ones? The ceremony and meaning behind burial, funerals, etc is never for the people who've passed away; rather they're for the people still living. This is no different.

I would not want to go mourn my family and have to see the grave of the person who killed them.

Bravo. If they used some funds incorrectly for this, so long as they repay the funds, who cares?

Yes.
THAT is why it was important.
(Perhaps also the mother's family
didn't have the funds to do so.)

Turn out it wasn't incorrect usage either. Troyer asked first. Shame on everyone who instantly saw wrongdoing, automatically assuming the police are awful people by default.

Unsurprisingly, Donnerboy turned his already sideways hat the other way, and leapt to his keyboard to mock these officer who paid a majority of the cost out of their pockets and the kindness of their hearts to ensure the family's solace.

Unsurprisingly, Donnerboy turned his already sideways hat the other way...

Interestingly...no matter which way I turn my tri-cornered hat it is always pointing the right way.

Cops Buy Plots Next to Powell Sons"

the next two people who get tased and die during a routine traffic stop will be buried there...
