Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Some parents and activists rallied at Chicago Public School headquarters in the Loop Monday to accuse a chain of charter schools of overly harsh discipline.

Protesters chanted: "Invest in us, stop arresting us."

Their chief complaint? Charter schools run by the Noble Network send students to detention for minor infractions and fine them $5.

The system works like this, students get demerits for violations like chewing gum or talking in class. Four demerits equal a detention and a $5 fee to help cover the cost of staffing detention.

If a student gets 12 detentions, they have to take a $140 discipline course.

Just an interesting sidebar. I wonder if the Donna Moore mentioned in this article is this Donna Moore:

The school was also roundly criticized by public unions for forcing teachers to work more than three hours a day in actual classroom settings; likewise the overall teaching policy was also targeted for giving students grades, which studies have shown make poor performing kids feel bad.

The most infuriating part of the article? "It teaches the students to be responsible for their actions. It also teaches the parents that you must be responsible for your children."

And that last statement came from a parent of a student in the school.

"overly harsh discipline."

Absent bruises or psychological scarring, I'll flag this one for hyperbole.

Well, send your kids back to the no discipline, drug infested, sex romp, no hope schools that are run by the NEA.

I can see issues arising from the whole fine part of the discipline, but if there was a system in place to prevent handing out detention just to make money then I say keep it up. Either that or 12 detentions and you're expelled from the Charter school for the year and get to repeat it next year or go back to public school.

Should have done a better job raising your kids.

Or just sell a few extra grams of crack that week. Fine paid plus maybe some new bling. Win win.

If you don't like the rules, don't send your kids there. Very simple.

It certainly wouldn't be a school going out on a limb stating such a controversial idea.
