Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Dip a toe into the wrong lake in the Amazon, and it may get bitten off. Here, gangs of piranhas swarm almost anything that moves. Anything, that is, except the arapaima. This humungous fish swims unchewed, even in piranha-infested lakes and rivers. A new study reveals how: The arapaima's unique scales are tough enough to deflect a piranha's razor-sharp bite.

Francois Barthelat, a mechanical engineer at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, agrees. "It's pretty impressive." Arapaimas are hardly alone in the fish world, he notes. His team previously discovered the same layered patterning in the scales of several other fish, even many "fish market" species. No, sea bass scales can't fend off a piranha attack, but they're still surprisingly tough, given their flexibility, he says. Barthelat has taken the concept to the lab, where he and colleagues design glass that directs cracks and fractures just as fish armor does. Such designs could one day be used to make lightweight body armor, meaning that soldiers could charge into combat wearing fish scales.

Saw some of these at the aquarium in Chicago over the weekend.

Big suckers.

Pretty cool. Most of our engineering feat are based off of designs found in nature.

Makes you think... or at least it should.

This looks like carry over from another thread, you must really be hurting today.

What is funny, on top of that, is the fact that I did not tell people what to think in #3.

I did say it should make them think, what to think... I didn't say.

Nice try though.

-what to think... I didn't say.

-Most of our engineering feat are based off of designs found in nature.
Makes you think... or at least it should.

Now you are just lying.

You are obviously intimating that since, "our engineering feat are based off of designs found in nature.", we should therefore be thinking about the design found in nature.

Wrong.

You could think about many things than just simply "the design found in nature".

Of course that would necessitate that an individual was thinking. You don't seem to be doing so at the moment.

UCSD baby....

You could think about many things than just simply "the design found in nature".

Or you could consider it a concrete validation of the principals of evolution

Principles.

Damn ipad

"soldiers could charge into combat wearing fish scales."

Boaz "charges" into combat smelling like a fish.

Makes you think...

Makes me think you don't know jack shit about biology, but like to pretend otherwise.
