Across the country, activists with ties to the Tea Party are railing against any local or state effort to control sprawl, preserve open space and conserve energy, calling them a United Nations-led conspiracy. "They are showing up at planning meetings to denounce bike lanes on public streets and smart meters on home appliances -- efforts they equate to a big-government blueprint against individual rights," reports the New York Times. Fox News is helping to spread the conspiracy claims.

I really don't understand where the conspiracy in the statement that they're using Agenda 21 to deny property rights and herd citizens toward cities when they basically say that's what its for.

In Maine, the Tea Party-backed Republican governor canceled a project to ease congestion along the Route 1 corridor after protesters complained it was part of the United Nations plot. Similar opposition helped doom a high-speed train line in Florida. And more than a dozen cities, towns and counties, under new pressure, have cut off financing for a program that offers expertise on how to measure and cut carbon emissions.

The high speed train line in Florida was canned because it was a dumb idea and would had been a waste of money in the long run. Just like every other rail project in Florida. Also how the heck does claiming private farm land cut carbon emissions?

Also how the heck does claiming private farm land cut carbon emissions?

In the same way that shipping Canadian oil to the Chinese, instead of building a pipeline to Texas, cuts down on carbon emissions.

Hope and Change.

Must be referring to yourself there I'm assuming.

So a high speed train is a UN plot? You know how much work would be created from building the train, how much oil will be saved by commuters using the train rather than planes, busses, and cars.

Good old tea party, sticking strong to their 19th century values and ways of life.

Change is scary!!

Change your diapers you old fossils.

Ok Clownshack, I understand you don't live in Florida so you wouldn't really know about local politics. The article is bs, the high speed rail issue had nothing to do with opposition to Agenda 21 or green projects in general.

Them there Green projects MUST be a UN plot because they use The Metric System!

No, silly, it's the UN's fault that urban sprawl is occurring.

Yes it's a UN plot to "encourage nations to use fewer resources and conserve open land by steering development to already dense areas".

I've always preferred ReMax over the Agenda 21-ers

Please, Agenda 21ers, talk this all up big time. Loud, often, and with no compromise. Keep it coming strong. And please tell us what political parties and candidates you favor, okay? That'll save us all a whole lot of work.

"They are showing up at planning meetings to denounce bike lanes on public streets and smart meters on home appliances -- efforts they equate to a big-government blueprint against individual rights,"

........'Cuz we all know that if anything screams 'pinko commie, it's a darn BIKE LANE!!!

Not sure why everyone think agenda 21 is some hooky, tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theory... it's hidden in plain view. www.un.org It's good people are wary of the UN.

sustainability is De-industrialisation with a new coat of paint.

Just cause you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

dude .. I was actually wondering that ..
~ running a 3/4 empty train back & forth really-fast saves how much oil?
~ and yes, it's jobs to mine the ore, make the steel, manufacture & ship the parts ..
but, it seems waaay less than green ..

Obama/Biden's Ohio high speed rail was laughed out of existence here ..
