Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Thursday, February 09, 2012

The Peoria-based Caterpillar won't be building its new North American plant in Illinois, company officials said Tuesday, in part over concerns about the business climate in the state. Instead, Caterpiller is looking for a location closer to its division headquarters in Cary, N.C. "Caterpillar's previously documented concerns about the business climate and overall fiscal health of the state of Illinois still would have made it unpractical for us to select your community for this project," the company said in a letter explaining its decision.

Good for Cat. Hope they and other business leave Illinois based on what the Demorats did to the state. The demo-RATS can be the last to leave that sinking boat.

Do liberals hate capitalism or not? I see them whining every time a corporation makes a profit. Here's your chance to straighten me out.

I'm modest by choice, Ray; for you, it's a matter of necessity.

"Here's your chance to straighten me out."

See, Ray, that's you problem: you actually believe anybody gives a shit whether you get yourself straightened out or not.

There you go again. You always avoid the subject and go for the ad hominem. It gives the impression you're an air head. I don't think you underestand capitalism at all. Not a clue. You're more annoyed that Illinois is losing a captive taxpayer to fund the state's welfare programs.

To say your belief that anybody gives a shit whether you get straightened out - as you suggested - is misplaced, is not "the ad hominem," Ray. It's an observation.

Nor do I give a shit whether you think I'm an "air head."

The reason is simple: I don't happen to value your opinion.

Get a clue, Ray.

You made it too easy.

This is what happens when you let libtards run things. Those hating on Scott Walker should take note. Illinois went the opposite route (substantial tax increases, more borrowing) and it's gotten us nowhere.

You are one of several self-inflated, egotistical, pontificating bozos on the DR.

I would have thought that of liberals. They think they are so smart that they have no scruples about sending an army of police, regulators, tax collectors, legislators, judges and jailors to take away my right to live free for my own good.

"They think they are so smart"

When you're finished here, see if you can clean up your webiste, Ray: it makes you look like a heavily-medicated loon/crank.

You wouldn't want anyone to get the wrong idea, would you?

Ray misses the golden days of 8 year old factory workers. After all, their small hands fit better into the machinery.

Ray pines for the days when women and minorities couldn't vote but could be beaten by a white man.

Ray still speaks of the good old days when industry waste mixed with drinking water, cars didn't need no stinking seatbelts, no safety standards existed for our products or workplaces, and god damn it cigarettes had vitamins.

Ray is a dinosaur who misses a time and place that exists only in his age addled imagination.

Workmans comp is almost 2 1/2 times what it cost in IN.

Sure Ray,

Netherlands(0.818); 5. Germany(0.814);6. Switzerland(0.813); 7. Ireland(0.83); 8. Canada(.812); 9. USA(.799); 10. South Korea(.731)

The only reason the USA is on the list is because of the socialist policies created in response to the great depression. The only thing free market capitalism guarantees is another depression. What incredible drivel.

Toyota, Hyundai and other automakers in the South pay about $48 per hour in wages and benefits. Considering the cost of living this is a damn fine income.

"Slavery" huh? How is that possibly relevant?

"class division?" What do you know about the South other than "Gone With The Wind" and some newsreels from the 50s?

"distain (sic) for regulation" You mean like all those federal regulations?

Most telling of all: workers have the right to form a union but after looking at the Rust Belt's tradition of destroying jobs and industries they make the informed choice.

"I have a box full of them in my basement...."

I was just kind of poking Babbler about the idea of someone actually buying a CAT hat. We get them as handouts here since we spend $Billions on CAT equipment.

I looked through my pile... I have 28 of them.

So is Louisville. And many companies have found Kentucky to be a good place.

The simple truth is this. Before the rise of labor unions, which like the civil rights movement, required some to die at the hands of the police before change happened, life was miserable for the working class. 80 hour workweeks which paid less than many employers contrived costs of living. Child labor. The same life China offers its slaves today. Capitalism is about whatever the capitalists can get away with. Human life is meaningless unless its their own.

Yeah, because Norway is just like the United states.

Norway has a population of 4.6 million, the size of Metro Boston. Norway's people are 97 percent homogeneous, and a big chunk of that income is free oil money.

The rest of your list is equally irrelevant.

OK vern, compare it to Kuwait or Saudi Arabia then. It doesn't change the fact that, as Einstein explained, socialism works better than unfettered capitalism or dictatorships, including here the United States. Again the fact is life was unbearable here until labor unions, workmens comp, social security and glass-steagal were implemented.

Exactly.

I suggest the union thugs self-immolate in protest.

"Please understand that even if your community had the right logistics for this project, Caterpillar's previously documented concerns about the business climate and overall fiscal health of the state of Illinois still would have made it unpractical for us to select your community for this project,"

Caterpillar did not have to make the statement in the way that it was made. It is an obvious attempt to influence state legislators. If the state thinks that it has the right policies in place, then their next step should be to punish Caterpillar i.e. attract Caterpillar's competitors to illinois, give special treatment to contractors with state contracts that use non Caterpillar equipment, etc.

What the hell does that have to do with today? You think people are obliged to join a union because it was a good idea four generations ago?

Child labor did not go away until machines replaced them. The majority of children working in factories were in plants that made glass bottles. Once a machine could make the little lip to hold a bottle cap, those children were out.

The other thing that is not being mentioned here is the cost of electricity is much lower in the south, so Google, and Facebook data centers are moving south too, along with EMCs labs.

The savings operating a business in the South are so great that it's just a matter of time before the North and the West Coast ether adjust or go out of business.

But yet millions still did whatever they could to get here. Not sure you can point to the past like that. Were things any better in the countries from which they fled? No -- and that list of countries includes the ones the left loves to point at for example:

England
Ireland
Poland
Germany

Be honest -- if the rest of the world were not in tatters, war torn disasters, would the USA have been able to dish out the entitlements that the New Deal introduced? Do you really think we would have had the growth throught the 50's, 60's etc. if Germany, Korea, Japan, etc were on-line manufacturing and trade wise?

The world is not the same as it was in the 40's. Politics that worked back then certainly would not work now in the same way. Pointing to the New Deal is irrelevant outside of its timeframe.

You have to love people who post out of pure idiocy and ignorance. Especially with the Googles at their fingertips.

Caterpillar's primary domestic competitor is Deere, headquartered in Moline, Illinois. (Most of Deere's domestic investment goes to non-Illinois locales).

Besides, you miss the entire point: Illinois is incapable of courting and attracting any industry. Illinois is only filled with greedy fuckers who see all businesses as something to bleed.

If Illinois cannot hang onto Cat, which has been there for a century, why do you think any other heavy manufacturing company would risk going there?

What an idiot. What are you? 14?

I have a box full of them in my basement.... maybe we can deal?

NO NO NO NO

IM not gonna fall for that 'its in the basement line'.

again.........................

"IM not gonna fall for that 'its in the basement line'."

It's ok... it's the above ground basement level. :-)

Maybe obummer should sign and executive order requiring Jewish Temples and Muslim Mosques to serve pork.

Like water running downhill, business flows to the path of least resistance. Next stop -- off-shore if the current atmosphere of demonizing and punishing success in the USA continues.

Just got back from China, read an interesting article how their government is lookimg to reduce the red tape to allow educated foreign experts to live and work in Shanghai. Currently, there are over 81K living there from different countries and China wishes to attract more. The ex-pats get great tax breaks, low cost of living and continue to make western level wages.

Contrast this with Illinois. I'm grateful that Cat is at least giving it a go in a right to work state.

Caterpillar's primary domestic competitor is Deere

Why do you want to limit it to domestic competitors? Caterpillar doesn't have foreign competitors?

Is it your position that the state is captive to Catepillar? If so, that's even more reason for big government. I want the baddest ass on the block to be something that I at least have a chance of influencing even if all I have is a single vote and a loud mouth.

So you want the government to take over Caterpillar?

"Caterpillar doesn't have foreign competitors?"

Komatsu comes to mind.

So you want the government to take over Caterpillar?

Of course not. I strongly believe in free enterprise but I don't like bullies and government has to be big enough and an economy robust enough so that it can't be bullied.

but I don't like bullies and government has to be big enough

Wow...

Nature makes Bullies. Do you consider the strongest to be bullies?

We won't even discuss that the people are friendly and the traffic in Raleigh is bad but does not suck like Chicago. It is a no brianer for Cat to move to N.C.

----

Cat is based in Peoria. Having grown up in Peoria and currently live close by and also living in Raleigh for 11 years, there are pluses and minuses to both.

Do you consider the strongest to be bullies?

No. Bullying is not about strength but about behavior. Bullying is about trying to impose your will upon someone/something without the consent of that person or thing. By framing its statement in the way that it did, Caterpillar was trying to bully the legislature into doing something that the legislature had already decided not to do.

By its nature, government acts as a bully to businesses; not the other way around. This isn't a problem for me because businesses are creations of government and as such must follow the rules established by that government otherwise they (the business) could lose it's franchise.

The potential also exist for governments to bully its citizens. However, this is unlikely because our constitution provides a well defined method for addressing government overreach i.e. elections, the courts and if all else fails, the 2nd amendment.

"It doesn't change the fact that, as Einstein explained, socialism works better than unfettered capitalism or dictatorships, including here the United States. Again the fact is life was unbearable here until labor unions, workmens comp, social security and glass-steagal were implemented."

first off, socialism is a dictatorship, or at the very least totalitarian. It is fundamentally incompatible with freedom because the whole premise is based on workers taking over the means of production, which someone else has already created.

And to claim that life was unbearable is utterly retarded. You can't force one person to work for another, and if it had truly been unbearable, it would have never happened. We would still be a society of hunter gatherers, where no man worked for another. The bottom line is that even the min wage worker enjoys a better standard of living by selling his or her labor than he or she would spending the same amoung of time focusing on subsistence activities.
