President Barack Obama on Thursday will free 10 states from the strict and sweeping requirements of the No Child Left Behind law, giving leeway to states that promise to improve how they prepare and evaluate students, The Associated Press has learned. The first 10 states to receive the waivers are Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oklahoma and Tennessee. NBC News confirmed the report.

He said action was necessary because Congress failed to update the law despite widespread bipartisan agreement that it needs fixing. Republicans have charged that by granting waivers, Obama was overreaching his authority.

In fairness, the Republicans should realize they also overreached their authority in passing the bill in the first place. The Feds should leave education to the states, localities, and parents.

President Ronald Reagan demanded that the income limit rule for Medicaid be "waived."

Earlier that year [1981] Reagan had proposed that states should be able to seek Medicaid home and community- based waivers....

So that makes it OK?

I was taught in first grade that two wrongs don't make a right. Too bad the DoE didn't manage to teach you that too, Doc.

Congress fails and Republicans blame Obama.

You could set your watch by them.

Yeesh.

NCLB is an epic fail, everybody acknowledges that teaching to the test doesn't work.

Be Well.

So then pass a bill to repeal it. Don't give the executive branch law-making-and-breaking authority. Dems had control for four years, and still the Senate, and enough republicans would love a chance to grandstand about cutting back the DoE.

Another cranky little troll bleats from under the bridge.

But that's what you get for calling hypocrites "hypocrites."

Neither side is willing to abandon their hypocrisy until the other does first. You're not new here.

Gee... I haven't seen you call Obama a hypocrite even once yet.

Sure the republicans are hypocritical, that is why it is so funny when democrats use the "Obama is doing the same things the Republicans have done" when he was supposed to be different.

"So that makes it OK?"

No. But in Doc's eyes Obama can do whet ever he wants and thus Doc's deflection.

No kidding. Obama could walk up and spit in Savis's face and he'd get a handshake, hearty Thank you and a vote.

NCLB is an epic fail, everybody acknowledges that teachers unions are to blame for the mess our schools are in.
Be Well.

Can you imagine how jealous AU and Corky would be? After three years of wiping Obama's ass here?

Of course that is nothing compared to what they will face when #45 is elected this November...

He's ignored Congress on everything. No reason this should be any different.

So what's the over/under on US planes bombing Syria? April 1? Sound about right? He won't go to Congress for that either.

And every lib here will applaud this.

Why do the states need waivers?

They can and should just tell the feds to fuck off.

What would DC do?

Drone them?

AU will blame Bush before driving the Conversion Van into a Lake Michigan Iceberg.

Starveus would get down on his knees and plead to replace AU and Corky. Obama would then take him to the nearest stall in the men's room and see if he could live up to his personal expectations for Starveus to become his personal attendant.

while its a good thread...it IS old news..not about this particular issue but the fact that barry picks winners, losers, and waivers for certain "FREINDLY" or important states...
