A Seattle librarian refused to force a man watching hardcore porn on one of its computer to move to a more discreet location, even after a woman with two children complained, reports the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The Lake City librarian said the library "doesn't censor content" and could not "be in the business of monitoring what their patrons are doing at any given computer."

Porn in the view of children.

You know if some pervert were to approach a child in the park and show them porn--they would be arrested.

But hey--at the Seattle public library--it's all cool.

Seattle, bringing the glory hole out of the porn shop and into a library near you.

3 cheers for being politically correct.

Murphy, you left out the best part: "The ACLU is again challenging the North Central Regional Library about its Internet porn filter. According to the ACLU, the library has an overly broad filtering policy that hampers adults' "researching school assignments, locating businesses and organizations, and doing personal reading on lawful subjects.""

Schoolteacher caught viewing elder porn at library in Houston identifies self as 'AFLAC'

:-)

Libbies are confused, and await talking points. Ordinarily, pornography is a feminist issue. But in this case, it's Washington state, and obviously a rights issue to consume porn using taxpayer money in a public building.

Have to wait for Keith Olberman and Stephen Colbert and the MSNBC lesbian whose name always escapes me, to let us know what to think about this one.

If the guy isn't ashamed to be watching porn in front of kids then he's probably getting off on it and should be put away.

Libbies are confused, and await talking points.

Bitch, please.

There isn't a single RW talking point on this entire blog that you morons managed to come up with on your own.

RWers are authoritarian by nature.

LWers are decidedly not.

Toeing the party line and repeating BS talking points issued by a reality-impaired RW media is part of who you are.

Spud is a fascist, dressed up like a ghey Canuck. Don't let him fool you.

It's bizzaro.

And it's a decency issue.

WA State has gone so left of center--it is not recognizable from when we lived there 17-23 years ago.

Maybe when the parents stop taking their kids and all the Seattle library has inside are perverts sitting at the computers all day masterbating--well then maybe the Seattle Library will do something to right itself.

The problem libraries face in stopping porn is that the filters that catch porn also block a lot of non-pornographic websites that should never be censored.

So their choice is to allow everything and promote freedom of information or block porn and restrict freedom of information. Librarians are champions of information, generally.

I used to spend a lot of time at the Fort Worth Public Library doing newspaper research for my job. A downtown public library is no place to let small kids do things on their own without close parental guidance. There are too many really sketchy people hanging out all day in the library, including some dangerous homeless and mentally ill people. (I'm not saying they all are.)

My guess is that this porn watcher had some mental stuff going on.

I hope the "If IT FEELS GOOD DO IT" liberal horses asses are finally satisfied.

Porn filters are not good enough yet. They will be one day I am sure, but they are still far too reaching. For example, how can you learn about slavery if words like "Slave" and "Bondage" are blocked?

"There are too many really sketchy people hanging out all day in the library"

Especially the Barbara Bush library in Houston.

My guess is that this porn watcher had some mental stuff going on.

It happens. See Pete Townshend:

Townshend was cautioned by the British police in 2003 as part of Operation Ore. Following a news leak that Townshend was among the subjects of the investigation,[39] he publicly stated that on one occasion he had used a credit card to access a website advertising child pornography.[40] Townshend, who had posted essays on his personal website in 2002 as part of his campaign against the widespread availability of child pornography on the internet,[41][42][43][44][45] claimed that he had entered the site for research purposes and had not downloaded any images.[

Fuck it if librarys are going to be sued for limiting content let the pervs view all the porn they want regardless of children being around or not.

The ACLU jumped the gun with their lawsuit, the library could unblock content if it is a legitimate site.

But nooo, the ACLU has to sue and sure enough we'll get a shitty opinion from the court to allow this to happen.

It's what society(ACLU) wants,let them have it.

rwd

Besides what right does anyone have to view any content the library wants to filter regarless of content.

It is like saying the library must stock material just because its out there.

Providing a service is just that, if you're unhappy don't go there.

Buy a fucking computer and research all you want from your own home.

I did. I own a percent of every computer in the library as well as their INTERNET connection.

About 5-6 years ago, some pervert would set up pubic library computers to show porn when a person sat down and moved the mouse. The third time it happened to me, I went ballistic, I stood up and told the entire library to point out who had been doing it and to point it out when they see anyone doing it.

The librarians were on my side but they could do anything, I would stop by on a regular basis just to try and catch the freak that was doing it and eventually I did, it was some guy I went to community college with, he had never graduated and was one step from being a homeless bum.

When I caught him doing it, I read him the riot act, I told him I was going to report it to the cops and he begged me not to, he said that he was already on probation for another sexual related crime and he would be put in jail. I told him I wouldn't call the police this time, but if I caught him again I would drag him out of the library and beat the living shit out of him.

I never saw him in that library again.

I bet the sick bastard got caught for something else and put in jail.

I did. I own a percent of every computer in the library as well as their INTERNET connection.

"Besides what right does anyone have to view any content the library wants to filter regarless of content."

I blame the Union of Founding Fathers, Local 1776 for all that freedom of speech crap. I mean, according to the conservatives, they knew the future better than Nostradamous did, so obviously they knew there would be the internet and graphic porn, yet they didn't say anything about preventing it. And remember, these were the guys who set the minimum admissable penalty for lawsuits down to the penny, so it's not something they just overlooked.

I hope the "If IT FEELS GOOD DO IT" liberal horses asses are finally satisfied.

So the library must supply material they do not own simply because it's out there?

If they can keep Mark Twain off the shelves they should be able to limit want they want viewd on the internet.

I said in past posts, the library can unblock legitmate sites.

Lawsuits make for very poor decisions all around.

Kan, I said that because of this:

keeping mark twain, or any other book off the shelves is just stupid.

I say allow porn, but have LED signs over the computer that blinks brightly: "Caution, Porn in Use".

What's Aflak doing in Seattle?

He got on the wrong bus en route to Salt Lake City.

Maybe when the parents stop taking their kids and all the Seattle library has inside are perverts sitting at the computers all day masterbating.

The libraries are already de facto homeless shelters and often the only public restrooms for miles.
You're doing a fine job of starving the beast, right-wingers. Soon, the libraries will be so grubby, you'll be forced to close them all.
To protect the children, of course.

With shakeweight commercials on TV who gives a shit about some ugly guy at the library as long as he's not moving from his cubical.

Yeeeeeeeech.

yeah I know...not the image you want to end the day with is it...BUT Its a damn fine library and there are always rooms filled with children reading, being read to, and there are minority children here reading and doing all sorts of things.

thank you barbara...

He was probably doing newspaper research for his job...

Funny.

There was no World Wide Web back then, though. The only naked computer ladies were made up of ASCII art. You had to print them out, stand at a distance and squint to see the nudity.

what you're saying is that you dont want the library to become the bus station.. :) I agree...there is only so room for ONE of us to hide between the stacks..

HEY THATS IT..

libs WANT to turn the library into the bus station

NOW I GET it...

Never visit the zoo in springtime either.

So when the pron sites go to .xxx then the filters will be doing a better job?

Yeas?

porn--not pron..

So that's why you decided to give the internet porn a shot in the Seattle Library? Were you doing comparative studies with the ASCII images to gauge the quality difference?

perhaps the complaining parents should bypass the librarian, and go to the police. i would imagine there are rules about what you can and cannot expose children to, and taking reasonable care in not allowing such material to be viewed by children.

You know if some pervert were to approach a child in the park and show them porn--they would be arrested.

Approaching a child and physically showing porn to them is different from the child seeing it on a machine you are using. Of course in the first example the person would go to jail. But where do you draw the line. Kanrei is right. His and other's tax dollars went to the library. The library is a place of knowledge. The internet should not be censored. I liken it to a book being burned. I dont care there's pictures of tits in the book, it's still a book. The internet is still the internet.

#54. if the guy was right next to the front door for all to see, knowing kids would see what's on the screen, it seems to me that it is being shown to children. it would be like if someone was watching porn at home on their tv with kids around. are they "showing" it to kids? well, yes...

if the guy was right next to the front door for all to see

I have not been in a library in years, but the last time I was, the computers were in the back to give the user some privacy.

America - land of the free and irresponsible.

QV

It wouldn't take a village if parents did their jobs.

#58 and teach the freaks before they get older that it's not ok to look at porn in a location where there might be children and wandering eyes.

Damn, even Boaz has seen the light. Let freedom ring baby!

Seattle...nuff said
