The world's greatest snow-capped peaks, which run in a chain from the Himalayas to Tian Shan on the border of China and Kyrgyzstan, have lost no ice over the last decade, new research shows.

The discovery has stunned scientists, who had believed that around 50bn tonnes of meltwater were being shed each year and not being replaced by new snowfall.

Oh my gosh... Melting!

The scientists are careful to point out that lower-altitude glaciers in the Asian mountain ranges – sometimes dubbed the "third pole" – are definitely melting.

Oh my gosh... More Melting!

Retreat of tropical glaciers. The retreat of glaciers is a clear indication of how climate change is affecting the Latin American region. The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador show evidence of reductions in the size of their glaciers. In Peru and the Plurinational State of Bolivia, the shrinkage of their glaciers, compared to 1970 and 1975, is even more striking. Since 1970 there has been a substantial reduction in the surface area of the smaller glaciers in Peru, along with a significant loss in water reserves during the last 50 years (NC-Peru 2001).

Let me beat Zat on here. Happy Extincion

He added: "The new data does not mean that concerns about climate change are overblown in any way. It means there is a much larger uncertainty in high mountain Asia than we thought. Taken globally all the observations of the Earth's ice â€" permafrost, Arctic sea ice, snow cover and glaciers â€" are going in the same direction."

Time series of annual arctic sea-ice extent and atmospheric concentrations of CO2 for 1900-2007.

I'm giving you a break here by not tossing the Cambrian geological period in here.

Climate and the Carboniferous Period

Earth's climate and atmosphere have varied greatly over geologic time. Our planet has mostly been much hotter and more humid than we know it to be today, and with far more carbon dioxide (the greenhouse gas) in the atmosphere than exists today. The notable exception is 300,000,000 years ago during the late Carboniferous Period, which resembles our own climate and atmosphere like no other.

For all of Zatoichi bitching about CO2 one large geologic event would make mans time on this planet insignificant. What Zatoichi and all his eco buddies fail to understand is that they do more to damage energy conversation and clean environment with all this hysterics. The average Joe has turned them off for crying wolf too many times and being proven liars to many times.

I imagine Zatoichi at some Roman street cafe stinking of garlic, smoking hand rolled cigarettes while watching the other geezers in the Plaza playing bocci ball and drinking room temperature San Pellegrino. Zatoichi manages to lure some unsuspecting tourist to the table where he bores him for the next half hour about how he used to measure ice patches in the arctic and is a well known authority on the subject on the internet.

You fucks like to conflate the natural 11 year solar cycle causing Global Climate Change with "lack of evidence that our toxic waste is exceeding dangerous levels planetwide".

We can determine from where the materials were spewn - such as the Rockies covered in mercury from Chinese industry half-way across the globe.

But let's specify the more immediate saturation impacting the US and Canada - what other dioxins than CO2 should we be aware of? Which ones? Perhaps sulfur dioxide? The 95% increase per year permeating lakes, streams and people who live near them?

Also, is there a dramatic difference between artificially created dioxin and the naturally occurring kind from vulcanism? Perhaps something to do with extreme toxicity to life? Do you think that might have something to do with changing the argument to CO2 instead of the other, far, far more dangerous kind of dioxins?

Look at what is occurring in locations where plastics are made, benzine is produced - with NO maximum ratios, containment or production limits. 100% of the population are experiencing neurological, genealogical and ecological collapse. Canada, India, Mexico, the US, South America, China, etc.

You are a propagandist asshat, and a liar.

That crock of bullshit not only earns an irony flag but an illiterate flag as well.

Arrhenius' 19th century calculations are actually a little conservative.

The problem with pathetically ignorant, lying shit like paneoclown is they couldn't pass a science class from the 19th century.

LOL I love it when morons point this out and think they've pointed out something profound.

Hey dumbfuck, what exactly do you think climatologists are referring to when the talk about warming rates, CO2 concentrations ect? Climatologists are well aware of the climate history (don't know why he's bringing up geology).

Typical lib. Never looks at the history or the big picture for perspective. Geologists have studied the physical conditions of the earth long before a bunch of liberal uninformed meteorologists reinvented themselves as climatologists and figured out that global warming was their meal ticket.

Ah, the Global Warming Denial Industry never fails to disappoint.

The Guardian UK? Shocked, Spud is shocked. LOL.

Spud tries to figure out their thought process on a story like this.

Let's see now...the glaciers at lower levels are melting at a scary and demonstrable rate but the ones at the highest elevations are not melting as much as some previous projections?

Let's run with that!

FTA: He added: "The new data does not mean that concerns about climate change are overblown in any way. It means there is a much larger uncertainty in high mountain Asia than we thought. Taken globally all the observations of the Earth's ice, permafrost, Arctic sea ice, snow cover and glaciers are going in the same direction."

If you don't believe in science because of politics then you fail.

Can Spud be any clearer?

Be Well.

Stories like this are just as irrelevant as the ones telling us NY City will be under water due to SUV's. In the enormous scope of geologic history mans time on this earth is almost immeasurable. We think too much of ourselves.

Posts like that are hilariously irrelevant because they are predicated on the insane notion that today's situation with 6 billion people on the earth and their attendant industries literally changing the composition of our atmosphere daily (and having done so for generations now) is not a unique one.

People like Paneoass do not seem to appreciate the uniqueness of the situation the human find itself in or it's severity because he's addicted to a RW narrative that's filled with corporate propaganda which has been generously sponsored by the worlds biggest energy concerns.

Maybe 4 years in the College of earth and mineral sciences at PSU has something to do with my views? People that treat the environment like a tool to obtain social change do far more damage to the environment in the process. Fear mongering and threats will never change human behavior. When you polarized this issues with your "the sky is falling" lies and data fabrication you set back energy conservation and alternative energy development for decades. When you use crony capitalism to create green products for a market that doesn't exist yet you drive the corporations and investors you hate away for this category.

Right. So astute that the link between global warming and political moves in response to it are a given and never, ever change. Someone couldn't possibly agree with global warming but disagree with the tax schemes proposed.

What's ironic is that your second line is better applied to those "astute thinkers" who deny global warming. Warming is happening whether you believe it or not and the effects will be real whether you believe it or not. But being an "astute thinker" I'm sure you're aware of that.

Penn State should not give Michael Mann forum on global warming

The Penn State Forum speaker's series on Thursday features professor Michael Mann speaking about global warming. This is the same Michael Mann who is at the center of two scandals. First, there was the scandal over his bogus "hockey stick" plot that misrepresented global temperatures over the last 1,000 years. This plot was discredited by expert statisticians and scientists. Second, there was the scandal over his involvement in the Climategate I and Climategate II controversies for allegedly manipulating data to align with his extreme political views pushing global warming alarmism.

Mann's own emails, which became public, show him admitting that global warming science is still far from settled and, even worse, conspiring with his environmental alarmist cronies to intimidate and silence those scientists and editors who dared to publish any article opposing the alarmist dogma of the evangelical church of the global warming crisis.

When Penn State should be doing everything possible to regain its status as a bastion of truth and integrity, the last thing it should be doing is supporting someone of such questionable scientific ethics and political motives with our dollars. There is no place for this brand of extreme political activism, disguised as academics, at Penn State. University leadership should be ashamed for continuing to provide Mann with such high visibility â€" at our expense.

Well, guess what libbies. It hasn't happened -
www.masslive.com

It's pretty easy to tell that the earth is getting warmer by just looking at average temperatures. The warming trend was actually noticed in the late 19th century, even before automobiles. The problem with the current crop of scientists is that they overblow the amount of warming attributable to carbon emission and then demand a global realignment of resources to thwart a temperature change of 1/2 degree over the last 25 years. They read the data right, but the conclusions are partially wrong and the solutions are completely overblown. All because of politics.

When you use crony capitalism to create green products for a market that doesn't exist yet you drive the corporations and investors you hate away for this category.
