The problem is that you don't understand the insanity defense. An un-remorseful narcissist doesn't qualify. A sociopath does not qualify, nor, obviously, does a psychopath. You have to be genuinely incapable of understanding what you were doing, like if you were caught.. and remain, in some sort of delusion that there are zombies all around you or that bigfoot was in cahoots with the Jews to steal all your jelly bottles and you genuinely thought you were killing bigfoot. Or you have to be SO batshit insane that you think bullets heal people.

Furthermore, the burden of proof is on the defendant, and you have to prove it with a clear preponderance of evidence.

It's not often proven. Firstly, a staggering majority of lawyers won't even attempt to use it. Of those who will, the attempt to use it is not even allowed by the judges in more than 99% of the times it's sought, and even when allowed it's only worked about 1/4 the time since the penal code was tightened up in the 80's.
