#4 - she wasn't arrested for not serving on the jury, she was arrested for ignoring a legally issued summons from the state. either show up and explain to the judge that you are ineligible to serve or send in the required response (indicating why you cannot serve). this is obviously a tragedy, but don't blame the state for doing what its supposed to do by miscategorizing and trivializing the arrest.

I am not blaming the state I doubt Illinois has much experience with hunger strikes but saying she starved herself so it was a suicide is just as silly as saying Illinois is to blame.

Durbin has promised to make it a law that jails put up signs saying hunger strikes are harmful to your health. That should stop any more of this type of prisoner abuse...

FTA-As a noncitizen, Gomes wasn't eligible to serve on a jury, but ignoring a jury summons last summer led to a charge of resisting arrest when a deputy showed up at her door, as ordered by a judge, to explain her absence.

As per the thread about the Brits refused entrance to the US,this is my exact thought about deporting aliens that do not conform to our laws.

She should have been put on a plane and sent back to her country.

If I get a ticket for speeding which I am legally not allowed to do and I kill myself over it is it now the Cops fault because he pulled me over or is it his fault that I killed myself.

If a Police Officer pulls over a drunk and the drunk says I have 3 kid and will lose my job if you take me in.

But just as hes about to pull in to his driveway your thirteen year old on her bike pulls out in front of him and because hes drunk he can't react in time he runs you child over and turns her in to ground beef at the foot of your driveway.

So in your dumb ass world the cop did the right thing by letting the drunk go because it could have caused the drunk to lose his house and his job, which if did happen you would have been saying the guy lived just a few houses away and the Cop should have let him drive home.

No the right answer is lock up the drunk because he got drunk on his own and chose to drive on his own.
He will be held responsible for his own actions not the 13 year old on the bike.

The situations are in no way comparable. Just for starters how is not showing up for Jury duty in any way equivalent to driving drunk? One is a danger to society one is a socially irresponsible. About the only place they are equivalent is that they are both law breakers. I don't know why she felt a hunger strike was necessary, but it is a way to effect social change, and as a protest method has a long history of success.

Oh and once the state locks you up you are a ward of the state therefore the state is responsible for your actions.

Mmmm....applying libtart to you was incorrect....withdrawn.

However, your position on once you are arrested the state is required to take care of is mostly accurate but not completely accurate.

The state must provide you with food, water ,shelter, heat,cooling and some medical care, note I said some.

But if you choose not to drink or eat for what ever reason (Barring mental health issues) the state is not required to force feed you with either food, or some supplement.
You chose of your own free will to do this to yourself, its not the state doing it to you.

No... the state is not required to step in after you have become incapacitated from your choice, because when you became incapacitated you where still doing what ever to yourself because YOU wanted to.

Lastly on Human life, I'll help any one who needs help till they either show that the no longer want my help.
Or are never going to help themselves no matter what I do for them.
