What did it save them in assistance programs? What did it save in unpaid/uninsured medical costs? What did it save in law enforcement costs? What did it save in education costs, including free or reduced breakfast/lunch programs? There about a dozen or more items I could list where the state saved considerable monies, including if 80K workers left the state, at least 1/2 of those jobs were filled by people previous unemployed. So unemployment assistance was saved & you get further saving by those former unemployed needing less gov't assistance in other areas (like if someone went from unemployed to a $10/hr job, they might still get some assistnce, but less then when fully unemployed). I've read this study, the man did 1/2 or less of the leg-work. He had a specific theory he was out to prove, facts be damned. How many schools now have less bi-lingual classes taught? How many are now able to fit all the kids in the main bulding rather than using on-site trailers as classrooms due to overcrowding. How many schools were able to reduce class size some CITIZENS are getting the education THEY PAID FOR?

Sorry Northguy, I DID read the story, also read the direct paper from this clown. The education portion that he takes into account for "savings" only represents direct education costs, he misses well over 1/2.

BTW, here is where his problem is. In 2011, AL had a GDP of $178.4 Billion. He is saying that AL lost $10.8B. That $10.8B "loss" represents a 6% share. AL had a population of 4.8M in 2011. He is saying the AL lost 80K. That 80K "loss" represents a 1.67% share. So, by this experts math, the loss of 1.67% of the population, a population that is illegal & filling low wage jobs, took 6% of the GDP with them?????

These illegals who ran off were making some serious bank, to have cost the state of Alabama hundreds of millions of dollars in sales taxes, considering that the state sales tax rate is 4%. The system worked when left alone, everyone was happy, except for the angry teabaggers. It absolutely drove them ape-shit crazy when they drove through town and saw all the prosperous mexican businesses.

The moral outrage was coming from the same people who, 40 years ago was screaming, 'keep those niggers out of OUR schools'. You figure it out.

the smart people in alabama (which is not the majority) are very opposed to the law, both in letter and in spirit. They knew it was going to cause a big hit economically.

Another mathmatical/statistical way to look at this (properly) is 2011 GDP of $178.4B divided by 2011 total population of 4.8M = $37167 GDP/AL resident as counted by the US Census. 80K people left, they were low wage earners as confirmed by the quack who wrote this paper. Even if we assign them a full share (over compensation imo) of $37.2K, the total GDP loss in no more than $2.98B, the total offsets will be close to that.

But this this mans world, low wage earned apperantly are worth 3+x's that. Silly rabbit should go back for more schooling.

AL unemployment rate went from 9.1 in Dec. 2010 DOWN to 8.1 in Dec. 2011. These rates are well under the Fed rate of 8.5% & have been coming down 2x's as fast as the Fed rate.

Alabama GAINED jobs in 2011, to the tune of 6900 & that is even with a loss of 5600 in Dec of 2011. Gains were made in 2011 in manufacturing, & goods-producing sectors (food processing included).

80K govnt assistance, low wage earners went away, many illegal. They took their govt assistance soaking families with them. Looks like the state is benefiting despite what this clown claims, at least economicly overall.
