Remember the concept of "smart power"? That was Barack Obama's promise, along with strengthening our friendships with allies abroad. It's generally helpful for both approaches to get the names straight:

When Bush made gaffes it was because he is stupid and illiterate.

When the Messiah makes a gaffe it is because he is working so hard on so many serious problems that sometimes his mouth can't keep up with his brilliant mind. Oh, and uh, Republicans make his life so hard.

Fact is, anyone whose job is mostly about talking for 15 hours a day is going to make a few random misteaks. And since there is always a camera pointed at the president, those misteaks are always recorded -- and selectively edited.

A perfect example is the Dan Quayle "potatoe" gaffe. The edited version everyone sees has him claiming the wrong spelling. Cut out is the minute before that when Quayle argues with the organizers and says "potatoe" is wrong.

A variation on the theme was Gerald Ford being clumsy and uncoordinated because he bumped his head one time, getting off Air Force One. There was video to prove it!

Gerald Ford was an avid skier well into his 70s, and physically active throughout his life. But everyone remembers the lame Chevy Chase skits on Saturday Night Live.
