Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Monday, January 30, 2012

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman (I) took up a local food bank's challenge to live on $4.06 per day -- the amount a single person on food stamps receives. "I didn't get to put any fruit on my meal plan this week," Goodman blogged. "And, there's not much variety in my vegetables. It's a good thing that I love tomato soup! ... I am relieved that I didn't have my family do the challenge with me. I can't imagine worrying if my children were struggling with hunger and so thankful that I had this choice."

"It's a good thing that I love tomato soup"

It's a good thing she loves tomato soup. It's on sale this week for 37 cents a can (2 1/2 servings of a brand name no less).

I think it's kind of misleading to live on $4.00 of food a day, claiming it represents everyone using the program. It's called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for a reason. There's also housing allowances and unemployment benefits.

And for all the talk about the costs of fruits and vegetables, one need only look at ag subsidies to agribusiness and what it does to the price of fructose and meat. There's a reason why the poor are disproportionately fatter and unhealthier.

I think it's kind of misleading to live on $4.00 of food a day

don't be a dope, ADAMMM. ever been on food-stamps (meaning that you have been through the application process)? that +- $4.00 a day represents the MOST one could get (+- per state). it falls QUICKLY from that max.

Thanks ich, I just assumed it was a flat rate and saw it as a free McDonalds meal each day, which seems pretty reasonable.

But according to the Republicans, food stamp recipients are living a life of luxury!

I don't remember any Republican saying food stamp recipients are living the life of luxury.

I do remember them saying to many people are on food stamps because of Obama clueless dithering.

I also remember them talking about food stamp fraud in its various forms.

Link please.

Am I reading this correctly? A family of two can get up to $367 a day for food stamps? A single person is $200?

Then why do you have a computer and the Internet service to post on the D.R.

And why are you not doing some thing else with MY TIME as I'm paying for you to stay alive.

Let me guess iPhone, car or two , cable , help with heating/cooling costs, a couple of kids , free lunch at school for the kids, maybe a mortgage.

Did you think to ask the people paying for your food stamps if they wanted to or for any of the other things I mentioned if you have them.

I know you think your entitled to these things right to and including the Kids on other peoples backs.

.....NOPE IN NOVEMBER....

Mensa yes I have 2 vehicles cable and a mortgage. I started getting the foodstamps when I hurt my back in 99 and could not work for about 5 months. I've never stopped getting them even though I work now. I just fill out the form annually and the ebt card gets reloaded every month. I use the money I save to buy myself cool goodies or gifts for the kids. So why not keep getting the free money?

But according to the Republicans, food stamp recipients are living a life of luxury!

and about a 1000 more times it's been said that food stamp recipients are living a life of luxury.

4 bucks a day is actually plenty if you go vegetarian. Beans and rice be cheap! Throw in a couple eggs and you'll be fine. Probably better than the diet 50% of red-staters eat.

Quit bitchin' fat American fucks!

I mean, plenty of other reasons to be concerned about the country as it goes down the shitter, but food is cheap and plentiful in this nation of Red-State subsidies . . .

I'm sorry, what was the point of this experiment? To prove that life ain't easy street when you're on food stamps?

Cry me a river -- you're getting FREE shit. No one owes you anything.

You're a retard if you think our current economic state is purely due to Obama's policies. Does he suck at recovery? Yes. Did he create the crash he's trying to recover from? No.

In short, pull the cock from your mouth and at least try to stay honest. So far, it looks as though you are prone to lying and hating America.

you're getting FREE shit. No one owes you anything.

Said while posting on the internet which was created with others' tax dollars while Chickenonthegrill sat back enjoying tax exempt status and mooching off the public teet.

Funny thing is, at best one could say that Republicans let the economic disaster we are currently experiencing happen on their watch, and yet with such gusto they proclaim Obama's guilt in it, all the while they are voting Gingrich in the primaries. It's fucking hilarious.

#20 - yeah, so funny I could just cry.

in that case you'll definitely want to watch the movie 'Super-Size Me'.
(however, if fast food restaurants are allowed to accept food-stamps, it would be a new thing.)

in FL you "fill out the form" every 6 months. it isn't "that" easy. the state offices are NOT nice.

also see:
military ranks on food-stamps

Using the link above, the average single person gets $6.67 per day, or a little less than $47 per week for groceries. A box of granola bars for breakfast, along with a gallon of Orange Juice. At worst, good frozen dinners for lunch and dinner, all of which can be purchased for less than what's left over after buying the orange juice and granola bars.

This is not far off from what I eat now. Voluntarily. As an individual, my "necessities" bill averages about $35 per week.

And if you want to put it in comparison, the plumpy nut we provide free of charge to the truly poverty stricken residents of earth costs about $15 per month, so even at $4 a day, the foodstamp recipient is doing much better than his or her peers in the developing world.

I don't remember any Republican saying food stamp recipients are living the life of luxury.

Beside Ed, how does that relate to my post? I have no say in the matter if I have never been on food stamps? That is arrogant.

Anyone can coast through a week at $4 per day to eat.

60 days not so easy.

Saw SuperSize Me, ich. Totally bs film- if you eat ANY food to the point that you're barfing, three times a day, it's going to do something to mess you up. Eating fast food is not the same as eating every last bit of food and drop of soda despite your body being full.

And 726, to state again- the program isn't built on the idea that people only use the $4.00 a day and nothing else- it's a supplemental program. It's supposed to help them out, not be the sole source of income for food purchases.

I have been on foodstamps since 1999 Eddie.

Food stamps are supposed to be temporary.

The mayor should have moved in with a family of welfare fucks for a week to find out how to trade those food stamps for some really good dope and how to live like a queen slopping from the public trough.

We all know it's a stunt, but you have to admire the effort.

BTW, I never got Foodstamps for my family even though I could have for the year and a half I was unemployed. My wife was in school and I didn't want her to have to quit, so I found part-time and temporary work making enough to stretch my savings longer. It was tough, but we never had to go on food stamps because family would leave groceries on our door step. I feel bad for those who have no family. I've never had to struggle as bad as I see because I know how to fish. I work with people who want to know how to fish.

Unfortunately, his condition is anything but temporary.

We all know it's a stunt, but you have to admire the effort.

No, not really. Because at the end of the week they go back to their lifestyle. I would admire it if she would do it for a month or two and if her family joined in.

For millions of families the end of the week means another week on food stamps. That includes many working families that struggle to make ends meet. But hey, they a living a life of luxury.

Well, sure. But I don't think a Mayor should be taking time away from her job to do something like that, don't you think? We all know that your solution would be far better to identify with someone in that situation. But, why does it have to be like that? Their situation should only be temporary. Every state has come a long way in the last 50-60 years in providing for people that have a streak of bad luck. It's a delicate combination of Church, Community and Government Programs, but nothing's perfect and it never will be. If you provide too much, then you see complacency develop and if not enough, children go hungry and undereducated.

Most people I have seen with food stamps have been buying milk and a couple other things with the food stamps and buying other groceries on top of it. I prefer the minimum income idea that eliminates all other forms of welfare and makes everyone at least right above the poverty line. It also is supposed to be much less expensive for the government because of less overhead. Either way, it is a good exercise to see how people live on things like food stamps.

I was unemployed for only two months in my life and I applied for food stamps because we had three kids. We never ate so well before or after we were on stamps. We were eating filet mignon and lobster tails.

But I don't think a Mayor should be taking time away from her job to do something like that, don't you think?

Why should she be taking any time off? You think she is going to do nothing the week she is on food stamps?

Did it say in the article she was taking a week off of work?

If you provide too much, then you see complacency develop and if not enough, children go hungry and undereducated.

For a lot of people and many posters on this site, $1 per week is too much, that they are living the life of luxury.

When I was very young my family was poor. Later in life my mother told me that my father was adamant that we not accept food stamps, despite qualifying for them. Can someone please explain to me how I survived to adulthood?

What asinine bullshit. "I made it without that particular kind of help, so should everyone else!"

Reminds me of the gal i saw at the store the other day. Dressed to the 9's, driving a Denali, using WIC.

"What asinine bullshit. "I made it without that particular kind of help, so should everyone else!"

I KNOW!!! Isn't it crazy! I should be dead right now!

By gum, how is it that I lived through my tender years, my parents having chosen to reject the benign hand of our federal father...

I don't remember any Republican saying food stamp recipients are living the life of luxury.

Guess you didn't read the thread then.

I was unemployed for only two months in my life and I applied for food stamps because we had three kids. We never ate so well before or after we were on stamps. We were eating filet mignon and lobster tails.

Now granted FuckWit Thom is mentally deranged and nothing he says should ever be taken seriously but he *did* say that.

I do remember them saying to many people are on food stamps because of Obama clueless dithering.

Obama *is* acting and he would be acting more if it wasn't for the dithering, do-nothing, 'obstructionists for the sake of partisan politics' Republicans.

I also remember them talking about food stamp fraud in its various forms.

Shitting on the poor is a permanent plank in the Republican party.

This idea that everyone who uses food stamps and welfare and unemployment insurance is just some useless, lazy fuck who simply lacks the boot-strappiness to succeed like Mittens is bug-fuck crazy, in case nobody has informed you yet.

Particularly when you idiots snidely refer to welfare recipients as "Obama voters".

White Knighting Wall Street and pissing on the poor while blowing racist dog whistles.

That's all you guys have left other than your hate of anyone who isn't a white, straight, Christian fascist.

Good luck with that in November.

Be Well.
