At least eight sea lions have been shot dead in the state of Washington the past several weeks, wildlife officials report. The bodies of seven sea lions were found with gunshot wounds on the Nisqually River and an eighth was found in West Seattle. Two of the animals are protected species under federal law. "California sea lions are sometimes viewed as a nuisance by commercial fishermen," the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said on its website.

"California sea lions are sometimes viewed as a nuisance by commercial fishermen,"

In the war between fisherman and seals there have been a shit ton of incidents like this.

First time Spud ever read of this many Sea Lions being slaughtered.

Anybody else ever go and do the Sea Lion Caves in Portland?

Some cool stuff.

Be Well.

I'll be in Portland in October, maybe I'll check that out.

The ones which were not protected as endangered species should be prosecuted as a waste of game meat

If BP or Exxon are responsible then its no big deal. But if a taxpaying citizen did it, throw away the key.

Good luck finding Sea Lion Caves in Portland! That's like saying "while I'm in here in Jacksonville, I'll swing by Tampa." Sea Lion Caves is just north of Florence, OR. About 150 miles from Portland.

Sea Lions aren't just a nuisance to commercial fishermen...I've had them take a recreational salmon right off my line on many occasions. They don't eat the whole thing, either...just eat the guts and let the sea gulls (you can't shoot them either) pick at the rest.

I doubt the cave is in Portland since Portland is on the Columbia RIVER.

Those animals wreak havoc on salmon populations, sitting at fish locks picking off fish...like nature never intended. They are not endangered and something needs to be done. Believe it or not, they are now over populated....

Yeah, them fucking fish locks are all natural, eh?

And what do you expect those terrible sea lions to eat? McNuggets?

Something needs to be done? Well why don't you get yourself a rifle and start shooting them.

Save the salmon! Kill the sea lion. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense, eh Dave?

Forget the locks. They sit in the mouths of the rivers and wait for them. I was just a kid back in the mid-70's when a group of government 'experts' came to town and spoke at the city council meeting. One of them stated that the sea lions don't eat salmon, they eat lamprey and other, smaller fish, and that they needed to be protected. A couple of councilmen offered to escort them down to the jetties for a sea lion viewing, where several hundred locals and the 3 'experts' watched sea lions eviscerating salmon after salmon after salmon......

The 'experts' then made a statement to the effect that 'perhaps we're looking at an adaptation of this local population'. I was only 9 or 10 and I knew they were idiots.

No, but I did a lady that visited the caves once.

Some cool stuff.

#9 I expected such retorts typical. Hey dude were locks natural? NO obviously. Man made..and they threaten salmon. Do sea lions have priority in the natural scheme of things?

Enviors have themselves tied in knots over stuff like this.

Here on the east coast many habitats are set aside for the sacred 'piping plovers'. The feds have bent over backwards trying to save them. They were aghast and out of ideas when they discovered foxes were ravaging their nests, eating ll the eggs they could get!

Another amusing episode happened with a saved sea mammal. I think it was a seal. The enviors saved a sick one, nursed it back to health, and took it up to Alaska to set free. Huge effort, and major money spent. All in name of conservation!

Well right after they let it go, a killer whale ate it in front of the spectators!

If they wander up river and hang by the locks shoot them and kill them. The smarter ones will figure that out
