Gail Collins: Do you think that after all is said and done, Newt Gingrich will just go down in history as the politician who conclusively proved that voters don't care about a candidate's sexual misbehavior? ... Until the 1970s, voters found it very easy to ignore things they would rather not know about prominent politicians, since the mainstream media didn't report it. That rule began to crack about the time one of the nation's most powerful politicians, the House Ways and Means Committee chairman Wilbur Mills, was caught trying to drunkenly fish a striptease dancer out of the Washington Tidal Basin.

not a chance....
Sexual indiscretions will still matter here (see Anthony Weiner)...
but with a lip-service speech confessing the sin and a mention of "repentance", we will easily forgive.

If Bill Clinton would've just confessed and said "sorry", the Republicans wouldn't have done much other than throw a few insults.

We are a nation addicted to porn and divorce, yet we can't fully justify our sick cravings. So we need the "confession" and at least a superficial talk of "redemption."

If that prick got into office he'd be a sexual pioneer alright. He'd take sodomy and misogyny to a whole new level while using Power Inflicting Government. He's a PIG.

Newt Gingrich, sex pioneer?

Look the guy likes to make out like he actually invented the "Tibetan Wheelbarrow" sexual position but it is, in fact, just a variation on a theme developed long ago.

/Ever wonder what safety word Calista gave him?

Be Well.

Sorry. Diaper Davey Vitter beat him to the punch. If you're a married family values hero and you can get away with playing around with hookers and get re-elected it means you've broken new ground in the GOP or the GOP never really gave a rat's ass about family values, beyond the votes and money the claim drew. Like being pro-life.

That link aint working fer Spud.

Try this one.

FTA: In South Carolina, only 31 percent of the people interviewed by Public Policy Polling said they believed the second Mrs. Gingrich when she told ABC that her husband had asked her to share his sexual favors with his longtime mistress, who is now the third Mrs. G.

*facepalm*

Wow, those crackers are gullible.

Be Well.

The current GOP has no values. They twist in the wind, going whatever direction they're told. The wonderful and terrible thing about religion is that it can be used to validate any point of view.

What the hell does any of this even matter? The public is pretty damned stupid to allow this garbage to interfere with political discourse. We have the most important presidential election in 60 years coming up and the focus is on whether or not this loser Gingrich wanted an open relationship or not. What the hell is wrong with this picture.

fta: Over the last few days, there has been a big-name Republican uprising against Gingrich, featuring everybody from Bob Dole to Ann Coulter. They aren’t personally offended by Newt’s marital history â€" or if they are, they can certainly live with it. But they’re totally afraid that if he actually got the nomination and people had to take a long, serious look at the whole Newt picture, the Republicans would be destroyed in November.

Shhhhh!

Not so freaking loud, Gail.

There are still rtards who are convinced that Gingrich is the anti-Obama incarnate.

Let them dream.

Be Well.

What the 'hidden harpoon of sexual proclivity? You've got Clinton, caught with his pants down with a DAMN INTERN! You got Albert Gore SHAFTING everything in skirts - being caught in Portland, OREGON trying to get a FREEBIE! And now forced, by the possible loss of MILLIONS, to go it alone, and in these troubled times, too!

And you have the CAHONES (or Ovaries) to look at Gingrich? Small potatos, in the larger picture! Even Kennedy had dalliances, along with Roosevelt (apparently both of them), Eisenhower(?), and Carter (in his 'heart') along with others, I am sure!

If your desire is for MORE OBAMA, go for it! You appear to be deserving of all that might happen! No body around to stop you either? Just stand in line until there's nothing left to get - then wonder what happened! And why that loaf of bread is $23.52 per! But you deserve it 'posting boy', you deserve it! And, will wonders never cease, you won't be alone!

What is sexual about Wilbur Mills' life saving attempt?

If that prick got into office he'd be a sexual pioneer alright. He'd take sodomy and misogyny to a whole new level while using Power Inflicting Government.

You say that like it were a bad thing Reitze.

Based on his sexual indiscretions, I would expect the valueless left to embrace Gingrich, but being the hypocrites we have come to love, we know they only embrace their own perverts.

Seeing the values you abide by, being a non-hypocrite and all, We'll leave Newt in Your own pile of perverts.

Newt's adultery shouldn't matter to anyone but his wives, his mistresses and anyone else he's banging. But the fact he was campaigning on moral values and condemning Bill Clinton for cheating *while* keeping a mistress for six years is pretty galling hypocrisy.

Well, that's one reason it matters.

If Newt had stolen a business partner's money rather than stolen his friend's wives, would it still be his business only in a presidential campaign?

Well, you know----Many of we on the valueless left are Christians, read it an weep. God may have forgiven Newt for what he's done, and I hope that that's the case.

But Newt Gingrich is not relying upon God to make him president. he's relying on you.

King Soloman had 700 wives and 300 concubines. Newt was actually quite reasonable, besides an important man needs a lot of strange poon tang.

Should candidates' honesty matter? Should empathy toward those around them matter? Is it any more unreasonable for women to wonder about Gingrich's misogyny than it is for black Americans to wonder about racism?

You talk like you have been on the bottom of Newt's dog pile.

Should candidates' honesty matter?

People are capable of being great leaders while being lousy to their significant others. We've had plenty of presidents who slept around. I think Kennedy was a great president. Great husband? Not so much. FDR had a mistress he saw over 27 years, including six visits to the White House, who was with him the day he died.

The fact that Barack Obama and Mitt Romney appear to have led impeccable marriages, while Newt Gingrich's private life is a trainwreck, is trivia. It's their public conduct, and the ideas they espouse, that matter.

I don't want only goody two shoes to run for office. And I say that as a goody two shoe.

Tony fucking Weiner resigned in disgrace over a sext message in a sex scandal without any actual sex.

Clinton was the target of a 7 million dollar witch hunt that eventually censured him for getting a few hummers from a star struck intern.

So, no.

Newt "the self proclaimed champion of family values and the sanctity of marriage" doesn't get a fucking pass.

K?

Cheating is one thing but serial cheating with other men's wives, dumping wives who are sick or "not pretty enough" to be a DC wife, failing to pay child support and alimony leaving your kids in dire straights, getting a hummer in your car from a neighbor's wife and not stopping when your kids show up quicker than expected, etc, etc, etc?

GOP ladies may line up to polish his knob but Spud imagines that Dem and Indy ladies can see he leaves a trail of slime that a snail would cross the street to avoid.

Character counts.

And on that count Obama leaves Gingrich way behind in the dust.

Be Well.

Clinton was the target of a 7 million dollar witch hunt that eventually censured him for getting a few hummers from a star struck intern.

If you think that it was a colossal waste of money and a complete disgrace to be investigating a president for nookie, then let's close the book on that stuff once and for all by declaring the sex lives of politicians to be unimportant.

I've already said Newt's hypocrisy was galling, and not paying child support is a separate issue that should be newsworthy. But cheating on your wife is something to work out with said wife. Not with Meet the Press.

I think I actually agree with you.

If you think that it was a colossal waste of money and a complete disgrace to be investigating a president for nookie, then let's close the book on that stuff once and for all by declaring the sex lives of politicians to be unimportant.

[okwitthis]

I've already said Newt's hypocrisy was galling, and not paying child support is a separate issue that should be newsworthy. But cheating on your wife is something to work out with said wife. Not with Meet the Press.

Spud tends to lump his cheating, his superficiality, his hypocrisy and his child support arrears into a box labelled "character" and then stamp it FAIL.

That noted, yes, what consenting adults do in private is nobody's business but their own.

Think a lot of this has to do with equating the marital vows with the oath of office.

A false equivalence, to be sure, but not without some level of resonance.

Thing about Newt, from Spud's perspective, is that the GOP should be heartily ashamed of themselves that this failed human being is even considered a viable candidate for them in 2012.

On some level they must know this but they bravely soldier on because even if the GOP has given them no real reasons to vote for them in 2012 the 24/7 RW news cycle has been playing the "Everything Obama ever does is wrong" song for so long now it's given them 1,001 fake reasons to vote against Obama.

So there's that.

Be Well.

Spud tends to lump his cheating, his superficiality, his hypocrisy and his child support arrears into a box labelled "character" and then stamp it FAIL.

I used to do the same thing. But watching a bunch of TV reporters tut-tut about Anthony Weiner's dorky cybersex scandal was where I got off. Uh, changed my mind. A problem with passing judgment about how people conduct themselves in their marriage is that we don't know bupkiss about how people negotiate their own marriages.

Do we know that Weiner's wife cared about him having cybersex? No, we don't, and it would be tasteless to ask her.

Do we know that Marianne Gingrich was blindsided by Newt having sex with other people? She says she was, but what people say after a divorce and what they did during a marriage are often two different things. She was once his mistress herself.

Do we know that Hillary Clinton gave a shit about Bill scoring the occasional tail? Not really. My guess is that she didn't care as long as it didn't embarrass her. So when MonicaGate blew up, she cared a lot.

(Personally, I had more problem with Bill's taste in strange than in his adultery. If you can't use the power of the presidency to do better than an intern, that's lame. I liked the rumors about him and Eleanor Mondale much better.)

It's titillating entertainment to cover sex scandals, and I don't keep the stories off here because I know I'm in the minority about their importance. But the media does not cloak itself in honor by fixating on what politicians are doing with their genitals.

Do we know that Weiner's wife cared about him having cybersex?

No, but we know that the woman who received the tweet felt sexually harassed by it.

Do we know that Marianne Gingrich was blindsided by Newt having sex with other people? ... She was once his mistress herself. -- #30 | Posted by rcade

This isn't a single bitter ex-wife. It's a pattern. For all his personal flaws, Bill Clinton also took big hits for supporting smart professional women like Madeleine Albright, Janet Reno, Donna Shalala, Alice Rivlin, etc. Where are those women in Gingrich's life?

Again, why is it more unreasonable for women to worry about Gingrich's misogyny than it is for black Americans to worry about racism?

Do we know that Weiner's wife cared about him having cybersex? No, we don't, and it would be tasteless to ask her.

She prolly wasn't best pleased but Spud imagines she was more upset at the unwanted publicity particularly so soon after giving birth.

Do we know that Marianne Gingrich was blindsided by Newt having sex with other people? She says she was, but what people say after a divorce and what they did during a marriage are often two different things. She was once his mistress herself.

Women have this weird idea that they can change a man.

That she shouldn't have been surprised goes without saying but that she actually might have been surprised and hurt is certainly within the realms of the possible.

Do we know that Hillary Clinton gave a shit about Bill scoring the occasional tail? Not really. My guess is that she didn't care as long as it didn't embarrass her. So when MonicaGate blew up, she cared a lot.

This has always been Spud's take on that. Hills knew Buba was a horn dawg when she married him and prolly only cared insofar as it became an embarrassment to her and her family.

That noted, the fact that she was able to turn a negative into a positive, which is to say the way she was able to parlay the public sympathy for that public cuckolding into a Senate Seat shows a real "make lemonade" attitude on her part.

(Personally, I had more problem with Bill's taste in strange than in his adultery. If you can't use the power of the presidency to do better than an intern, that's lame. I liked the rumors about him and Eleanor Mondale much better.)

BBW's give the best head.

Period.

No link. Just take Spud's word for it.

This just in. Power is an aphrodisiac.

/If it wasn't Henry Kissinger would still be a virgin.

The French have a far more realistic, non-puritan attitude about this kind of thing.

It's titillating entertainment to cover sex scandals, and I don't keep the stories off here because I know I'm in the minority about their importance. But the media does not cloak itself in honor by fixating on what politicians are doing with their genitals.

Sex sells and anything that can distract or deflect from real issues is always welcome in today's 24/7 Big Media world.

Be Well.

I've rarely seen you miss the essential point in this way. The essential aspect is not legality, but betrayal.

GOP never really gave a rat's ass about family values,

Insofar as their own marital infidelity and sexual indiscretions, no they don't give a rat's ass.

But talk about two men getting married and the whole institution is under attack.

She was once his mistress herself.

So she is a member of the "Don't do as I do, do as I say" crowd. Typical.

But cheating on your wife is something to work out with said wife. Not with Meet the Press.
