You can argue whether it was "stupid" etc. but there is no argument about it's selflessness.

I think tillman's example serves many purposes.

I hold volunteers responsible for their actions, supporting through their acts- murder and war crimes on another country. no volunteer post 3/03 (in iraq's case) can claim that they were unaware of what they were doing.

i hold people responsible for their decisions and I find a decision to go to war and kill people the most profound one can make and I find no acceptable justification for serving the us military in iraq and though i have never supported afghanistan i can understand one's willingness (even eagerness) to serve there after 9/11, but within a few years (if not months) it became clear that we have no right to be in afghanistan (now that we are fighting the afghan civil war).
