Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

WaPo: Every year, the State Department issues reports on individual rights in other countries, monitoring the passage of restrictive laws and regulations around the world. Iran, for example, has been criticized for denying fair public trials and limiting privacy, while Russia has been taken to task for undermining due process. Other countries have been condemned for the use of secret evidence and torture.

Even as we pass judgment on countries we consider unfree, Americans remain confident that any definition of a free nation must include their own -- the land of free. Yet, the laws and practices of the land should shake that confidence.

They are not 10 reasons. They are 10 symptoms. The reason is the American people don't have the courage to live free.

Or perhaps the American people don't have a clue as to how to live free responsibly. And that does take enormous courage. That does take a certain will to limit one's self to a degree. And it also take courage and will to allow others to pursue their own desires when it does conflict with one's certain base beliefs, as long as what those others are doing cause no harm, gay civil unions being a prime example of this.

Too many think that freedom equates to no rules, no law, no limits. The US is replete with amoral, selfish, greedy, inherently mean people who don't give a frak about anybody or anything, and do whatever they want, no matter who gets harmed. They serve only themselves to sate their lusts. Many of us have been victimized by these vermin. Some can never recover.

So I look at what is happening in the US, and across the globe. I believe that what is happening in the US goes far beyond just a group of megalomaniacs trying to usurp power. The Times They Are A'Changin'.

Americans are a very cynical people.

Is there no "hope"?

The reason that this is no longer the land of the free is because a bunch of half-educated losers have been allowed to implement their version of Utopia - which is forced equality and government induced financial security - at the expense of other people's liberty and opportunity.

And it isn't just Mr. Hope and Change, although he applied the afterburners to the whole process. It also is a whole slew of Republicans and Democrats.

Just realized that the Washington Post link requires sign in. Full article is here: jonathanturley.org .. save you the trouble.

Americans have had their freedoms striped from them as a direct result of the Patriot Act and Homeland Security.

#7 I like having freedoms striped. they look better that way. not so plain.
