Aid is run by the states. My favorite is Michigan. If you have more than $5,000 in assets, you don't qualify for assistance. So you can be homeless, penniless, and living in your crappy car, but because your car has value, you don't qualify.

Think, a country where you can get 50 lbs of food for free and where there are 60 area food pantries just waiting to feed the poor and help them with paperwork. This situation completely sucks, but "the country" had nearly nothing to do with it. Mental illness and not knowing options had a mot more to do with it than the country.

The women needed the help of a social worker not a food bank. You know one of those lazy government workers you don't want to pay for.

Whatever your politics are, I think we can all agree she shot the wrong person first.

I don't care how "pragmatically" you view this grotesque scenario, you are missing the most obvious elements, purposefully diminishing the complication and irony of food stamp denial turned fatal.

I do agree - she was mentally unstable and her children were helpless to change that fact, although a mediator could have, and absolutely should have been capable of defusing the scenario. Hell, light up a fucking BONG and get her relaxed - even surreptitiously, she could have been calmed. Whatever was performed was inadequate.

I'm sorry, I didn't see anything in the article relating to "conservativism". However, I did read how the mother missed her interviews to get food stamps, as well as didn't provide proper documentation. She then waited 3 months before even inquiring about why her app was denied. Nothing about conservatism that I can see, unless proving that you qualify for benefits is considered conservatism...
