"The bigger question trying to be addressed, which you willfully ignore, is what to do w/ millions of kids who have no work ethic. Especially as the boomers invert the workforce."
That's a really important point. Why doesn't he make it? And talk about all classes in our society. I've met a great many lazy middle class and wealthy types, too. Oh, why doesn't he talk about them? Because he wants them to vote for him. And because they don't suck up our taxes, apparently.

"You haven't been to a big city in a long time, huh?"
Right, so you just made your agenda clear: put the urban poor to work; leave the other lazy classes alone. Genius.

"Another brilliant move by Newt."
Bingo. I guess ol' Hap isn't a "small gov't" conservative.

"When I was growing up, I was helping my 12-year-old neighbor deliver papers, and I was 10 at the time. And we were working in grocery stores at 12 and 13.
Good luck trying that today. "
Is there a single state in this day and age in which kids under 15 can work for money--not under table, but for an actual paycheck? I don't know how paperboys are these days; we don't get the paper, but I've seen adults driving their kids down my street early in the morning, delivering the paper. (That was probably three years ago.)
Seriously, child labor? In America? There are ways to get a work ethic other than going to a paid job and other than being forced into an "internship" with the janitors at school. It's called PARENTING. And if you have a problem with parents, address THAT. And btw, it's not only poor people--and hardly is it all poor people--who have done an utterly shitty job getting a work ethic into their kids. I know some mighty lazy middle-class kids right in my classroom. You gonna force them to clean the school too? How about having leaders who care about the behaviors of all parents of all kids, not just those who (by their perception or otherwise) vote for the other side. The work ethic issue is real, so is young people's inability to create fun on their own, without the structure of school or the local rec dept. You gonna legislate that, too, O Small Government Gurus?
