Scientists in Canada have raised the prospect of reversing Alzheimer's disease by applying electricity directly to regions of the brain. In two patients, this Deep brain stimulation reversed an expected decline in the brain's memory hub and it grew. "We've never seen the hippocampus grow in Alzheimer's under any circumstance. It was an amazing finding for us," said researcher Andres Lozano of the University of Toronto.

There is hope for Mod-rat?

Happy happy, joy joy!

Sounds like steroids for the brain. What if you did this stimulation to a healthy brain? Would it increase your brainpower like the brain booster from Forbidden Planet?

This is great news.

Losing the memories of your loved ones is one of mans saddest diseases.

Anyone who's been around Alzheimer's is probably grateful for even the slightest improvements in the crushing odds against loved ones.

On this we agree. I when through Dementia with my Father and it is the cruelest of deaths.

Absolutely agreed. I will never forget having to break the news to a dear friend that, yes, his wife was dead -- and had been for several years (even though a while before he happily conveyed the news they'd recently visited for a couple of weeks).

Ahh Michael crichton, you were so ahead of your time

FrankenGrandpa!

So, can scientists now preserve my head like in Futurama?

Not yours. It's too big.

Whatever it means, it will be too little and too late for both my mom and dad. They are shells of who they were.

I hope to God it won't be something that I will need.

Whose brain would Jesus stimulate electrically???

;~}

Man, sorry to hear that Grendel.

Man, sorry to hear that Grendel.

Thanks, it is sad, but my situation sadly is not unique.

My father's nursing home Alzheimer unit is filled to capacity; my mother at this point has assisted living at home--in part filled by my brothers and me.

I have a number of friends my age who have parents afflicted with the illness.

Little can be done; I take fish oil daily in the hope that it will provide some protective benefit.

Quick! Obama needs electrodes on his ass.

#9 theoretically its certainly possible - just freeze for a while!

My take on it is it emphasizes the brain-exercise concept of arts and sciences, music and math and stuff like that. Prolly also has nutrition and toxin connections... Like stimulating the same brain area on a more regular basis via regular use. In contrast watch TV constantly... decline. Pick one.

I take fish oil daily

"7 seas" capsules .... Or straight Cod Liver Oil?

Really useful stuff that is... I often take it too.

Those damn socialists.

This is good news for Pakis. In about 30 years, the treatment might be available in that Alzheimers-infected rat hole.

I take 2400 mg daily (two soft gels) of fish oil, derived from anchovy, mackerel and sardine.

Is cod liver oil supposed to be better?

See, it isn't torture to put electrodes on people's testicles, but rather "preemptive" medical care.- the CIA

Grendel,

No expert but I think avoiding too much sugar and starch might help your chances out as well.

No expert but I think avoiding too much sugar and starch might help your chances out as well.

I have no doubt that you are right. Avoiding those things are probably good for all kinds of health issues as well.

The sugar is a tough one; I do have a bit of a sweet tooth. I do exercise regularly though--run 3-4 miles 3 to 4 times a week.

Is cod liver oil supposed to be better?

I don't know. But it's the one I've always had. Stinks like anything, but goes down easy. Thin oil.

Look up "7 seas" capsules. They are golden pills which contain this stuff.. for people who can't stand the taste. Very high in Vitamin A and D.

This is great news. Some developments hopefully transcend all politics. This type of advance is one of them.

As someone who tries to stick mostly to vegetables and meats yet is married to a woman who remains thin while keeping a massive stash of candy around the house at all times, I feel your pain.

Tosser--I will look into the 7 Seas pills. Thanks. The ones I take are enteric so they digest in the intestines--no fish burps!

Live or Die--I guess it could be worse; she could be overweight and keeping a stash of sweets around!

Quick! Obama needs electrodes on his ass.

Why don't you cut out the middle man and just lick an outlet?

The only good thing about alzheimer's is that often the victim goes back to a time when they were younger and healthier. I worked in a nursing home and one woman would ask me 2-3 times a day "Conductor, when is the train due in?" I'd tell her half an hour and to go have a cup of tea while she waited. She was waiting for the train bringing her daughters but she had outlived them both.

I've got a deal worked out with my youngest-if I go whacky, he's setting me up with two asian hookers and an eight ball of heroin.

As terrible as the disease is, I think it is often more difficult for loved ones.

My father, though an intellectual and mental shell of himself and wheelchair bound, does not appear unhappy, anxious or in emotional pain. I don't think at this stage of his disease, his brain is capable of pondering for any length of time his own state and condition.

He does have moments of insight, though. I asked him once if he knew what was happening to him. He said, "I am here because I am losing brain matter." A moment later he was uttering gibberish.

As terrible as the disease is, I think it is often more difficult for loved ones.

I think so, too. We hurt because we remember what the person was, the victim is who he is at that moment. We hurt because our parents don't remember us, but they don't hurt because they don't know who we are.

Amen Grendel.

From the link they are going for the mild Alzheimer patients and recognize that some get to a point of no return.

My Pop Pop had it--and my friend's father has it now--it's devastating.

If this gives some promise for stopping the effects and growing cells--it is nothing short of a miracle.

Exactly. You know.

You know it too. Sad.

like "shock therapy" -- with a different name?

Yes this is the hell they speak of I'd say. My 91 yr old mother is in a nursing home and the altzhiemers wing and now cannot even string 3 words together.
That wing is the saddest place I know of.

Electrical stimulation can be modified in many ways, but can only impact the materials provided. Structure those materials in a specific manner and yes, you could produce monstrous results. As for a gigantic invisible psychic projection - it would be far simpler for a field effect to change the way others behave, imo. The mind is a trap as well as our playground.

On topic: I imagine the mal-folded prions are easy targets and considered alien material as they collect in every tissue throughout the body.

Here's an electromagnetic device from 1930's that's along similar lines:
www.rife.org "Royal Raymond Rife was born in 1888 in Elkhorn, Nebraska USA. From the 1920's through to his death in 1971 he lived and worked in San Diego, California, USA. Rife mainly became famous for two specific inventions (although he had many others). One was a super microscope allegedly capable of resolving objects below the Abbe limit, and with magnification claimed to be as high as 31,000 times. The second invention was an electromagnetic therapy device consisting of some sort of radio transmitter feeding a plasma tube which was claimed to kill specific pathogenic microorganisms at specific frequencies. It was claimed that in 1932 Rife succeeded in isolating a "filter-passing" microorganism (later referred to as a virus) that was the cause of cancer. And in 1934 it was further claimed that Rife succeeded in curing several cases of cancer in real patients by targetting this microorganism (which he called "BX") with his ray machine. The Rife technology was dismissed by the American Medical Association as quackery and was suppressed by various organisations and American federal agencies. Even today it is largely outlawed in the United States, and is frowned upon by authorities in some other countries."

Tossed (and others),

Stick to distilled fish oil. Straight fish oil tends to have mercury issues, which will end up killing brain cells. Cod liver oil may give you too much vitamin a If I'm correct.

What's this here hippie campus? Will pepper spray contain it? herm

But I was so looking forward to hiding my own Easter Eggs. herm

For the vegans flax seed oil is an alternative to fish or red krill oil.

I would suppose combinations of cholesterol-building elements and cyclical treatment (day on, day off) could induce brain re-growth.. dunno, there's bound to be research.

That is why I named a product. "7 Seas" is a very well known and very old British (I think) product and is considered safe for kids and old people. Each capsule as a tiny amount of cod liver oil (checked for mercury and stuff) in it.

These pills.

If you don't take the pills but take the oil itself by the tablespoon like I did, then yes, you are correct.

I only do it when I'm sick. I helps me get better.

flax seed oil

I've heard a lot about it... supposed to be very good.

I was visiting an Alheimer's day care one time (a friend was a volunteer) and I offered to buy new magazines. The lady in charge said "Don't bother. These are new every day."

Hopeful news. My wife and I went through this with her mother. She would remember me but not her daughter. I would not wish Alzheimer's on my worst enemy.

Walnuts are also excellent food for brains. Plus, they can help with erectile dysfunction according to an ancient Roman recipe.

Seriously, your personal quest for inexpensive ED solutions is not something that i would mention on the retort.

Here's your official "too much information" reply:

:] 15ish years ago I was at a gothic manor party, most people dressed in fine ancient attire. Lots of pretty male and female flirting and laughing over wines and beers. I'm such a freakin' idiot geek - our little clutch somehow drifted the conversation into sexplay, piercings and other taboo topics. The girls were acting disappointed over their counterparts inability to "keep up", I was utterly drunk but remember commenting how "I've never had that problem".. and found myself surrounded by women. In my lap, at my feet.. it was alarmingly erotic. Apparently even younger guys can have ED - it's a mystery to me.:]
