The AK-47, including semi-auto and full-auto models, shoots a 7.62x39mm round. It is a short-range, low-powered rifle round approximately equal to the well known .30-30 rifle round. The round itself can take down whitetail deer (150lbs~) at ranges of 100-200 yards. For targeting humans anything beyond 300-400 yards is very iffy IMO. The AK-47 itself is not known for accuracy and even what it has degrades quickly as distance increases.

One could certainly fire an AK-47 and send the bullet 800 yards or more downrange, but the odds of hitting what one was aiming at would be very slight indeed. Disclaimer: I am glad they caught the shooter and do not want ANYBODY to shoot at the White House. I have also fired numerous Soviet and Chi-Com weapons including several AK-47 variants and actually like the rifles.
