Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Wednesday, September 01, 2010

Republican Reps. Eric Cantor (Va.), Paul Ryan (Wisc.) and Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) are under fire for the marketing of their new book, in which they describe themselves as their party's "Young Guns." MSNBC morning host Willie Geist offered them this sage advice: "Unless you are 'The Situation,' never make up your own nickname."

Reps. Eric Cantor (R-VA; 47 years old), Paul Ryan (R-WI; 40 years old), and Kevin McCarthy (R-CA; 45 years old) have authored a self-aggrandizing new book set to be released next month titled "Young Guns: A New Generation of Conservative Leaders."

The book's marketing campaign comes with a comical ad trailer, featuring a lofty soundtrack and soaring accolades ("They are ready to make history. Together, they are ‘The YOUNG GUNS!' Innovative, energetic, forging new solutions.") Watch it here.

All the egotistical self-praise from the "young guns" was too much for former Republican congressman and MSNBC host Joe Scarborough. This morning, he and his crew incessantly mocked the new marketing campaign, debating whether it was a "parody." "Never make up your own nickname," cautioned co-host Willie Geist. Scarborough joked that the three congressmen "were" the future of the Party until their latest ego trip. Calling the ad "awful," Scarbrough said it was "the worst idea ever."

Here's the wildly ridiculous "Young Guns" self-promotion video, complete with frosted camera lenses, stars gleaming on teeth...As was noted on Scarbough's show this morning, this looks like something with which Colbert will have a ball:

Talk about clueless!

ROTFLMAO!

Good grief.

*Sigh*

The funny part is, well OK, the OTHER funny part is that only 13 Repubs have signed onto the Young Goon's Roadmap, not wanting to admit to voters that they are all for privatizing SS and taking apart Medicare and defunding Veteran benefits.

They'd much rather blather on about Park51 than admit their fondness for Ryan's Contract On America.

Please to be calling it a "terrace."

I haven't watched Young Guns in a long time. Which one of the characters beat an intern he was sleeping with to death and stuffed her under a desk?

Need a hug?

GOP's "Young Guns" Mocked

♫♫Shot doooooooown in a blaze of glory!♫♫

Obligatory

I have been trying to avoid posting anything more today, but this comment will not leave my mind.

GOP "Young Guns?" Weren't the Young Guns called the "Regulators?" I thought the GOP hated regulation. Maybe they need another metaphor.

"Need a hug?"

"Is that a rabbit in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"

I wonder, what do the dashing pistoleros have to say about same-sex marriage?

Seems to be quite the thing among the cognoscenti of the GOP's conservative establishment these days.

"There is a strong conservative case to be made in favor of gay marriage," former McCain campaign manager and fellow same-sex marriage fundraiser Steve Schmidt told the Huffington Post on Tuesday. "Marriage is an institution that strengthens and stabilizes society. It is an institution that has the capacity to bring profound joy and happiness to people and it is a matter of equality and keeping faith of one of the charters of the nation, the right to live your life.

"More and more conservatives are saying that opposition to gay marriage would not be a litmus test for membership in the GOP," Schmidt added. "And more conservatives are making the case that no more do you want big government conservatives in the bedroom than big government liberals telling you how to live your life."
www.huffingtonpost.com

So, Young Guns, how do you stand on this one -- the strengthening and stabilizing of society through same-sex marriage?

Like Mr. Cadenhead, I ask not for myself but on behalf of a friend.

Or, as ken mehlman affectionately calls them "Young Buns".

#23 | Posted by northguy3 Hot Pink Funny flag!

They must have been drunk when they decided that was a good idea.

Sort of like a bad tattoo...

Regarding the new push from GOPers favoring same-sex marriage -- intelligent move, though I do wonder how it'll play with the angry, ignorant Base -- it only seems appropriate to meld that position with the arrival of the -- *howls of laughter* -- "Young Guns" with something like this: www.youtube.com

Hey, this is an easy one.

Dick (also pejorative) Cheney's daughter, Ken Mehlman, Larry Craig ...

They realized the GOP was a party full of hippos with carrots tied to their noses posing as rhinos.

Why is this on the front page?

This is simply Liberals whining.

Then you turn around and whine about Glenn Beck doing the same thing.

for former Republican congressman and MSNBC host Joe Scarborough.

You can't watch it without feeling really embarrassed for Scarborough and the other jackasses with him.

The real embarrassment is to have to lie about being Conservative in order to get a paycheck!

Can you imagine having to lie about being Conservative in order to get the small salary he's getting?

Scarborough is what a conservative looks like.

Neocons have thoroughly confused idiots into thinking being a snarky hypocrite is being 'conservative'.

Those people living in Ryan's district have to be very proud of their Representative. Les Aspin is probably rolling in his grave.

Those people living in Ryan's district have to be very proud of their Representative.

They are. In 2008 (a heavily Democrat year) he won re-election by nearly 30 percentage points.

I don't need a definition. I know what a neo-conservative is.

Would you call a politician who left millions in debt behind where there was none before their tenure a 'conservative'?

Again, according to your response, you have no clue. Please don't pretend that Joe Scarbourough is Conservative. I've watched him. He says "conservative" things, but without conviction. He's very shy about it. And then turns around and agrees with Liberal concepts.

You obviously don't know what a real conservative is.

Can't even offer a yes or no answer.

I think there is. It's "ultra extreme minority". At least I've never heard a single person endorse a return to all of Bush's failed policies. But I concede there are probably three or four of them out there.

Have you?

Explain how Republicans in Congress are proposing to do anything differently than they did last time they had power. You won't be able to. They want to extend all the deficit/debt creating tax cuts, for example.

When Mitch McConnell was pressed on how he'd pay for extending the cuts on income over %250,000 know what his reply was?

"Who said we have to pay for it?"

All that's left is for you to admit you are part of the problem.

Au,

I think I'm starting to understand what is wrong with you. I am watching Margaret Cho on Netflix, from 2005. She's funny as shit, but is obsessed with Bush (George Bush) LOL!!! Anyway, I'm watching other commidians from the same time frame, 2003 to 2005. All obsessed with anti-capitalism and and Bush-haters!

I would have thought it an easy question.

Eric Cantor is still taking the lead in yet another attempt to rebrand the Republicn Party.

After 8 years of supporting a political and economic disaster, aka as the Bush/Cheney era, the GOP is much in need of a "rebranding."

Back in the days of the Old West it was called "running a brand" . . . or rustling a cow.

#88 | Posted by Corky

Then how about posting the part of the plan giving Social Security to Wall Street bankers? This should be good.

•Preserves the existing Social Security program for those 55 or older.
•Offers workers under 55 the option of investing over one third of their current Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts, similar to the Thrift Savings Plan available to Federal employees. Includes a property right so they can pass on these assets to their heirs, and a guarantee that individuals will not lose a dollar they contribute to their accounts, even after inflation.
•Makes the program permanently solvent – according to the Congressional Budget Office [CBO] – by combining a more realistic measure of growth in Social Security's initial benefits, with an eventual modernization of the retirement age.

Sems to me he wants to allow us to invest the way Congress does. And for a pissant always citing CBO figures, I imagine this is somehow different, right Rachel?

"This proposal addresses the shortcomings of the current system and strengthens the retirement safety net by providing workers with the voluntary option of investing a portion of their FICA payroll taxes into personal savings accounts. Due to the higher rate of return received by investments in secure funds consisting of equities and bonds, these accounts would allow workers to build a significant nest egg for retirement that far exceeds what the current program can provide....

"Beginning in 2012, the proposal allows each worker younger than 55 to shift a portion of his or her Social Security payroll tax payment into a personal retirement account, chosen from a group of investment funds approved by the government (see below)....

"Those choosing the personal account option will select from a list of managed investment funds approved by the government for soundness and safety."

From Ryan's Roadmap to Ruin:

"Those choosing the personal account option will select from a list of managed investment funds approved by the government for soundness and safety."

That's not Wall Street, either the place itself or the concept?

Jeezus, you're even stupider than I thought.

One can only wonder where millions of retirees SS money would be now had this Wall Street handling of SS been passed several years ago when these Wall Street stooges like Ryan first started peddling it.

In a black hole somewhere. And no, I don't mean Michael Steele.

"Those choosing the personal account option will select from a list of managed investment funds approved by the government for soundness and safety."

Funny, I read that and mortgage backed securities and treasury bonds came to mind.

Second thing that comes to mind is "soundness and safety" for whom? Me or K Street?

Approved by the Goverment. Corky stated "giving Social Security to Wall Street bankers" Suddenly, a Goverment run program doesn't suit your inebriated agenda.
Sober up and see if you can tell the difference. We'll wait 30 days.

"His ideas are radical, no doubt. Some highlights of the Roadmap: Replace Medicare with a voucher-based system, get rid of the corporate income tax and replace it with a consumption tax, offer a simplified income tax system and personal investment accounts as an alternative to the current Social Security system. He'd also cap revenue at 19% of GDP and put limits on spending, including a decade-long freeze on non-defense discretionary spending.

And you thought getting health care reform passed was difficult.
Critics say the Roadmap does nothing to lower health care costs, reduce the deficit or prevent a debt crisis; it would slash taxes for the rich; it guts Medicaid and could cause health care premiums to rise; and it subjects those under 55 to cuts in Social Security benefits. For a good overview of the criticism, see the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities' take on the plan.

Ryan knows that his Roadmap has no chance of being enacted in its current form. Even most Republicans are steering clear of it."

Uh oh, another GOPer who didn't read the CBO's cover letter to Roadwreck Ryan.

Here it is, Wuss, with glaring caveats: www.cbo.gov

Here's some more bad news for wishful thinking Know Nothings like Wussy:

[T]he CBO's analysis of the Ryan plan was drawn up based upon revenue projections Ryan himself provided. The CBO doesn't analyze the impact of tax policy on revenue, so they were unable to estimate how Ryan's policy prescriptions would actually impact revenues--and just took Ryan's numbers at face value. Turns out, those numbers were pure fantasy.

The Tax Policy Center--a non-partisan think tank--did a thorough analysis on the impact of the tax changes Ryan proposes--a massive tax cut for the wealthy, paired with substantial tax increases on 90 percent of the country--and found that the so-called "Roadmap" would actually leave the federal government desperately starved for funds....

The result, they conclude, is ballooning, unsustainable deficits--a quirky feature for a plan touted far and wide for its potential to right the country's fiscal course.

The link was changed and is not valid. FWIW.

Not sure if this makes a difference, but it seems that the criticisms and compliments are still based on guess work. I would say though, some of those proposals can be a starting point and maybe evolve into something of a solution.

The long-term budget projections presented in this letter under both the alternative fiscal scenario and your proposal do not include any macroeconomic effects of projected budget deficits. Rather, macroeconomic conditions under both alternatives are assumed to be broadly similar to those observed on average in recent decades. In
reality, the two scenarios would have quite different macroeconomic consequences, as described later in this letter. Another limitation of this analysis is that it does not include a number of potential interactions among various provisions of the Roadmap. More broadly, all of the analysis in this letter is subject to a great deal of uncertainty. Estimating the impact of comprehensive changes in the structure of the Social Security program and the financing of health care is extremely challenging over any time period but especially so over a 75-year horizon.

"Those choosing the personal account option will select from a list of managed investment funds approved by the government for soundness and safety."

Approved by the Goverment. Corky stated "giving Social Security to Wall Street bankers" Suddenly, a Goverment run program doesn't suit your inebriated agenda.

Suddenly a Government program that you agree to?

Young Guns?

Cos they shoot themselves in the foot so often?

These rethug brat-pack wannabes are just more of the same old brand of rethug bullshiat we've come to expect only in a slightly less senile and more photo-friendly package.

More like The Three Amigos

Spud was gonna go with The Three Stooges but yers is good too.

Be Well.

So Crispee,
