I thought that was sort of funny--the poll, I mean. But really, if you don't live there, who cares? Who names schools? My older boy's elementary school is named for the neighborhood--a nice way to avoid controversy.

They were going to name a 9-12 school Bush High, but they knew everyone would just say:

Okay. 1. The shortened summer is the result of board/super/admin policies, generally in the form of in-service days. Any teacher I know would rather have added school days (for kids) than added in-service days (generally crappy and pointless).

2. Really, a longer school year is bad for kids? What's so great about summers off? Learning loss is good? Hm.

3. Mantra thinking? Have you been in a public school lately? Rote learning has largely gone the way of the dodo bird.

4. Indoctrination? No one has yet explained to me what that means in public schools, other than implying propaganda and phrases like "rewritten history" (like what the Republican radicals are doing in Texas? hm).

Outbacker, is that nonsense an attempt to address my questions 3 and 4? Didn't work--ONE school is not indicative of systemic indoctrination. The prevalence of, oh, the Pledge of Allegiance, however? That's systemic indoctrination. But anyway, I have said, every time that school and that song have come up, that the teacher or teachers involved should be investigated for proselytizing, and should be dealt with appropriately (according to the contract, state law, and community standards). No teacher should be engaging in clear indoctrination.

The disappointing performance of U.S. teenagers in math and science on an international exam, in scores released yesterday, has sparked calls for improvement in public schools to help the country keep pace in the global economy.

The scores from the 2006 Program for International Student Assessment showed that U.S. 15-year-olds trailed their peers from many industrialized countries. The average science score of U.S. students lagged behind those in 16 of 30 countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a Paris-based group that represents the world's richest countries. The U.S. students were further behind in math, trailing counterparts in 23 countries.
