Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

There's an America where it doesn't matter what language you speak, what god you worship, or how deep your New World roots run. An America where allegiance to the Constitution trumps ethnic differences, language barriers and religious divides. An America where the newest arrival to our shores is no less American than the ever-so-great granddaughter of the Pilgrims.

But there's another America as well, one that understands itself as a distinctive culture, rather than just a set of political propositions. This America speaks English, not Spanish or Chinese or Arabic. It looks back to a particular religious heritage: Protestantism originally, and then a Judeo-Christian consensus that accommodated Jews and Catholics as well.

This is the best opinion piece on this debate that I have read so far. I think Douthat is pretty thorough in identifying the tensions and conflicting values brought to a head by this proposed mosque.

Yeah, he draws a pretty distinct line between people who understand what this country is about and are actually aware there's a wider world beyond our shores and ignoramuses who don't.

the second america is no different that the people they claim to hate.

the taliban of the west.
culture is more important than the fundamental values.

amazing that fundamentalists from both sides piss on the fundamentals of their professed ideologies.

FTA: The first America is correct to insist on Muslims' absolute right to build and worship where they wish. But the second America is right to press for something more from Muslim Americans -- particularly from figures like Feisal Abdul Rauf, the imam behind the mosque -- than simple protestations of good faith.

Very much THIS.

Good read, Moder8.

Way to live up to yer handle.

Be Well.

This article has the author choking on his own bullshit where he descibes his two America nonsense.
He describes his first America as the college graduated illuminati and it's grand view of the world, and the working class, the illiberal voice, who's dissent is nothing more then an annoyance.
His first America is most willing to go along with the second until it becomes politically expedient not to,another words, hypocrisy.
Fuck off with your bullshit.

RWD-
Douthat is a conservative. Nice criticism, though.
