Steven Colbert explains the looming "tax bomb" for the wealthiest 3 percent of Americans facing the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, as well as "trickle down" economics. "A Tax bomb! Quick, rich people, to your tax shelters! That's why we have them."

Extending the Bush tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans will add $1,000,000,000,000 (that's TRILLION with a 'T') to the national debt.

And they wonder why so many Americans view the GOP as a gang of hypocrites...

The 3% rich pay good money for their tax loopholes. They own Congress and almost all of Congress is composed of the rich. Dream on AU.

Thank you for that, AU. Colbert is so right as usual.

Damn, it is bizarre that just to the left of this posting box is the vertical banner ad for Fred Thompson wanting to keep the tax cuts, saying he needs help, and he does look like he needs help; his facial expression ravaged by an odd combination of greed and self-pity, with the street bum's beggar con-man look in his eye, all while his delicate pink flesh looks so healthy and his lower lip pouts.

Yeah sure. We'll ignore the out-of-control spending side of the ledger.

KaBooM.

Wrong.

The "trickle down" the rest of us get is the right wing pissing on our heads and telling us it's raining.

If Obama has a lick of sense he will make Congress extend the cuts for the middle class and let the cuts for the rich expire.

But, then again, that makes too much sense. Not sure Congress is up to the task.

Obama administration: Trickle Down Poverty.

We thinking people are not suprised that most proggs get their cues from a comedian. Too bad your so wrong that it detracts from the humor.

"You thinking people" apparently can't spell. Ironic, no?

It's Trickle UP Poverty...

I love Colbert--TAX SHELTERS for TAX BOMBS!!

I think the congress will figure something out--something in the middle.

But raising taxes is bad--and the deficit needs to be addressed.

If you want to keep the tax cuts--they need to pay for it

Cut spending.

It's the actually the Trickle Down Economics Scam and it's put billions in the pockets of billionaires at the expense of the middle class. Once the Bush tax cuts have expired it's time to repeal the Regan tax cuts.
The wealthy did not use the cuts to invest in America. They betrayed America. They are addicted to their own greed. Time for them to start paying again.

That's all fine and dandy. I agree with you.

There is this problem about influential Democrats that don't pay the taxes they owe, debted to them through the very laws they have crafted. I have a problem with this.

There are many Democrats who have strong influence on monetary and tax policy that don't pay the taxes that they should.

I would not mind paying more in taxes. I understand we need a lot of money to put our books into the black. I would like to add that once our Fed. Gov. is in the black consumers will be more likely to spend.

I want to see cuts in government spending, FIRST. I'll pay the taxes after.

Go live in Kenya for a year you dumb shit. Maybe then you would appreciate what you have.

If we could only disarm that Government Spending Bomb. Yea thats the ticket! It's the cake you don't eat that doesn't make you fat. Or hey boss I spent too much last month I demand a raise.

Keep Republicans out of power and the budget won't nearly double in 8 years

Thats funny AU it tripled this year!

The budget 'tripled'. On what planet?

If you're talking about the 'deficit' it didn't 'triple' either.

2009's (Bush's budget) had a $1.4 Trillion deficit.

How the Republicans expected to nearly double the national budget, cut taxes, and fight two wars while BORROWING for it and not expect deficits would be a ludicrous assertion. Well, they didn't expect to not have deficits.

"Deficits don't matter" - Dick Cheney

And, they acted on that like no one in the history of the world.

BTW, $700 Billion+ of the deficit is 'debt service'. The GOP didn't CHOOSE to use surpluses to pay it off.

Your right it was the deficits I was talking about but your wrong about Bush's deficit. First of all the money dispersed on the bailout under Bush (with a Democrat house and senate majority) to the banks was all paid back. Take that off his debt and put in on Bush 3 our new President.

Really?

I thought it was the spending-the-money-part that adds to the deficit!?

By your logic, you get a raise at work and it makes your debt go up? [hint: spending money you don't have is the only thing that can make your debt go up. Same with the Government.]

I call him Bush 3 because he is at best just as bad as Bush. We are still in Iraq, sill in Afghanistan, Gitmo is still open and although my employment taxes will not go up this year next year they will. And I make way less than $250,000.00 .

Oh and AU I at first said the budget instead of the debt. My bad. But the year is not over yet and Bush 3 can make it happen!

Cut revenues and nearly double expenditures as the GOP did and you'll run deficits. Deficits didn't matter when Bush was President. Remember?

Right wingers would give you any number of reasons why ... THEN. Only when a Dem took the WH did Republicans in Congress - many the same who voted for unfunded tax cuts and massive spending increases - change their tune.

Even here suddenly our financial problems are all the Dems fault. Which is a ludicrous assertion.

They did matter when Bush was President. Why do you think McCain lost?

Pay as we go! Another promise gone to the wayside.

FEDERALIST

Obama was left with a near Depression, and systemic deficits.

With Bush and Co slashing revenues while nearly doubling the budget with unfunded tax cuts, wars, and new programs, what should they have expected? We had projected surpluses that would have paid off the national debt by now.

Now, revenues are down because of the deepest recession since the Great Depression. That means less revenues too.

This all needn't have happened, but the GOP thought it far more important to give tax cuts to fat cats and spend like drunken sailors than be pragmatic and pay off the debt.

They did matter when Bush was President. Why do you think McCain lost?

Picking Palooneytunes as VP didn't help. Deficits weren't a big campaign issue. Turning around the economy was. And it's working. We went from negative GDP growth and losing 750,000 jobs a month to positive GDP and job growth in the private sector.

On deficits, remember "Deficits don't matter" - Dick Cheney?

Revenues are down because small businesses have no idea how the health care bill will effect them. I own a small business. Let me tell you Bush 3 (Barry) is not helping me. "Lets vote for it and see what's in it." You got to get off the GOP hate man. All government is tooooooo big. It kills the economy. Why should we send all our money to Washington so they can send it back as they see fit and say they are helping us?

"on the condition that they buy them [the unemployed]." Poor-meranians. This is some funny shit.

And you all want to ruin it by having serious conversation. : )

Please, FEDERALIST

None of us were asleep as the economy almost went off the cliff and the deepest recession since the Great Depression began and continues.

Blaming it on 'health care' is ridiculous. Especially since small businesses will get a tax credit to help pay for it. You probably aren't big enough for it to even affect you.

Obama's done more to help small business than Bush ever did. Ask your CPA.

The GOP just boted unanimously against a bill to help small business, BTW.

You should really check out your facts. The GOP isn't on your side.

AU we have a problem as a country. We need to go foward. We can blame each other or we can get a solution. I did vote for Bush the first time but not the second time. I am not your enemy I'm a schmuck trying to make a living.

By the way I know the GOP is not on my side I also Know the DNC is not on my side they are the same.

My wife and I are small business owners too.

On the topic of HCR I've done a LOT of studying. We'll be a LOT better off with it than without it. Our premiums have been rising at least 15% a year since I can remember - compounded.

I don't consider you an 'enemy' :-)

PS

This notion of "trickle down economics" IS as Colbert portrays. Like being urinated on.

AU I happen to be in Massachusetts, let me tell you about the cost of health care in this state. If you have more than 11 employes you must supply health care. And the cost since our new law was passed has more than doubled. Copay has gone from $5.00 to $25.00 and It cost me $100.00 to go to the emergency room. Next month it goes up again. I have 9 employees I will never have 11.

All government is tooooooo big. It kills the economy.

It was doing fine under Clinton's fiscal policies.

Only when the GOP resumed the 'cut taxes, increase spending, slash regulations, and create deficits' did we get in the mess we're in.

I've been around a few years. What Bush and the GOP did is unprecedented in it's negative effects.

Federalist,

Depending on how small your business is HCR might be a good thing for you. I know I contract with a couple owners who have no health care because they are not large enough to get a company plan and they can't afford individual care. One has a life long health problem and can't get it period. So he is really being helped. The others might be helped if it keeps cost under-control, which I do not concede that it will.

Hey Au thanks for the conversation but I have to go mow the lawn. Hope you have a great weekend.

#42 | Posted by Federalist

Things will change when HCR is fully implemented nationally. You'll have a lot more options that'll be cheaper and you'll get a tax credit to help pay for it.

Hey Au thanks for the conversation but I have to go mow the lawn. Hope you have a great weekend.

You too, man. Have a great weekend yourself :-)

Wow. A friendly exchange on DR! It warms the cockles of my heart.

You mean the country where our president was born? Why don't you move to Saudi Arabia. You'd be more comfortable in a dictatorship.

It warms the cockles of my heart.

What the freak are cockles anyway?

Cockle is the common name for a group of (mostly) small, edible, saltwater clams, marine bivalve molluscs in the family Cardiidae.

/The R Kelly joke was a lawler!

Zat so that means that prag has warm clams in his heart?

Prag you are a very odd man.

How come use of an antiquated phrase generates more responses than some articles I've posted on this site? Hm. : )

LOL, Tao. No no no. Google "cockles of my heart"--the whole phrase. I have no clams in me--or on me! Nor any other... shellfish.

At least 45% of small business will be hit by this tax; they rank #1 when it comes to hiring people. They think letting the Bush Tax cuts expire will be bad for employment.

Instead the Liberals would rather listen Steve Colbert, who probably doesn't rank in the top 99% when it comes to hiring.

This is why the unemployment rate is not coming down, the people who are in charge have never hired anyone in the private sector, and seem to think that the people who do hire in the private sector, don't know shit.

Liaberals know best thats why they want to run everyting, just amazing.

"Yeah sure. We'll ignore the out-of-control spending side of the ledger."

So true. Here's that wonderful trick again - getting us to argue over WHO should pay more taxes, when out of control spending is the real problem.

Diversion of profits, whether personal or corporate, to this gluttonous monster of a Government, suppresses freedom and success for rich and poor alike.

Libbies, some of you are waking up. Please help us save the Country.

As Spud would say: obligatory.
