I wouldn't advise any of the young women in my family to engage in this type of thing. Most shoplifters are relatively harmless but if you get the wrong guy, this is a good way to get yourself hurt. And the store isn't going to do anything for you if that is the case.

Plus, for all you know the store jipped the guy and he was just trying to get even George Castanza style.

I wouldn't advise her to do it, but she did do the correct thing in stopping a thief. Excuse me - an "alleged" thief.

If more people stepped up and stopped TRUE criminals and wrong doers, this would be a better place to live overall.

What's the dire consquence if the guy gets away? Not worth the risk. This is a country where taxpayers pay huge bonuses to people who just stole billions and but we're supposed to risk our lives over a stolen T-shirt or whatever? I don't think so.

If you're talking about a school shooting where most the kids lay on the floor and wait to be shot: Then yeah, the kid who takes it upon herself to slam the gunman to the ground would be a huge hero who saved herself and everyone else.

Not saying she's not a brave girl. It just wasn't a smart thing to get involved in....

That just illustrates my point as to things wrong with this country. Bailing out failed business models, allowing the people who put them there to be rewarded.

In this case there is no "dire" consequence - it is a breakdown in society all the same. Large retail businesses routinely let it happen now. My wife works for one and they are instructed not to interfere. Heck her managers have even gone so far as to pay out on returns without a receipt when they KNOW it was stolen.

How about stopping when someone is broken down on the side of the road? Too risky? In some ways that is more risky if you ask me. But again it is the right thing to do.

That's what I meant. This is what is really wrong with out country. We reward grand larceny. Petty theft is not our problem.

For a 16 year old girl? Yeah. For me? Depends on how I feel and whether I need to get where I'm headed in a hurry. Last time I stopped for a guy was a very cold Super Bowl Sunday a couple of years back. Not only did a save a dude from freezing out on highway, but I'm pretty sure I saved him a DWI because I dealt with the cop he pulled up to see if we needed more help.
