Senate Republicans used the filibuster to block Democratic campaign finance disclosure legislation in the Senate Tuesday in a 57-41 vote. Democrats said the GOP broke its pledge to add transparency to political giving following the Citizens United ruling. "The Supreme Court decision was a true step backwards for this democracy," said Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "It allowed corporations and special interest groups to spend unlimited amounts of their money influencing our democracy and it opens the door wide for foreign corporations to spend their money on elections right here in the United States."

So, you want unlimited cash with no accountability?

The GOP is making sure that happens.

Republicans, don't whine about 'corporations'.

Democrats fail to pass finance disclosure bill.

Too bad too many never even take 10 seconds to glance at a linked article:

A 57-41 vote fell short of the 60 votes needed for the Senate to cut off debate on the measure. Republicans unanimously opposed the measure while Democrats solidly backed it.

Is there anyone with a brain who doesn't hold the GOP in utter contempt?

Look no further than the Tea Partiers and "Libertarians" on DR for the answer to the brain question.

"Is there anyone with a brain"

Not since John Wheeler died, no.

Party on.

No one's invited the participation of the GOP more than this Congress and President. The GOP have chosen to be the party of "NO!" regardless.

A far cry from the days of Tom Delay and Trent Lott bullying every deficit/debt creating POS law through with whatever means - from reconciliation to threatening their own members.

Cockroaches hate light.

Public finance of elections is the only way to go. Take the money out.

"Take the money out."

Good luck with that.

By just crafting this legislation this close to the Nov. elections proves that it is somewhat sketchy and is meant to help democrats at the polls. Anyone that thinks this was honestly written for the good of the people is clueless. If it was the other way around and the GOP was in control and the Dems were blocking it I would say the same thing. Strictly politics as usual. All of these assholes need to actually work on something productive for a change.

Translation = If Americans knew who really paid for advertisements attacking Democrats and supporting Republicans they would reject the Republicans. In other words if the truth is known Republicans can't win.
If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear from transparency.

Wow, the rhetoric really has come full circle. The left is now even quoting the right circa 2003.

"The left is now even quoting the right circa 2003."

I'm not sure what you are referring to here, the only thing I can think of is Kerry's military record. AFter the election the FOOL finally did release it....there was nothing there which would have had any negative association for him. It was a stupid move on his part.

The election of Kerry, the nonsense about the government reading emails or listening to phone calls. Everytime the Bush administration passed another invasion into our civil liberities, the right would always answer with "If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear."

The GOP serves their corporate masters with no apologies. Even if the measure will benefit the foundation of the US democracy, they will vote against it...

Is there anyone with a brain who doesn't hold the GOP in utter contempt?

Yes, We the People. Sorry about that, 18% liberal nutty fringe with failed ideology departing in Nov

The GOP serves their corporate masters with no apologies.

#21 | Posted by gl0bal74

There is one obvious exception of a GOP politico apologizing to BP.

It was a stupid move on his part.

#19 | Posted by danni at 2010-07-28 11:01

he's batting two for two on the stupid moves isnt he? the boat shit is at the least a PR screwup.

and its always interesting to hear the politicians different ways to name something...like this bill...

i think that if the donation is above a certain amount you should have to disclose the source.

We all know why they blocked it.

The DISCLOSURE act would conveniently disclose big Republican donors and exempt from disclosure Democrat multi-million dollar donors like unions because of clever technicalities, biased woven into the bill.

Great name, DISCLOSURE. Disclose what benefits only one side of the isle.

Love the way the lefties piously wrap themselves up in the flag, apple pie and all that because the name of the legislation sounds so nifty.

Like health care and the Arizona law, the advocates on DR seemed to have failed to do one thing. READ THE BILL. Typical.

I'll settle for freedom of speech without the help editing of Big Brother Government.

I am still waiting for anyone who supports this to address my only concern:

Ads cost money and, the longer the ad, the more it costs. Forcing every group to list everyone who helped fund an ad would only serve to make running ads not cost effective for small organizations. Yes, it would make the big groups more honest, but would completely silence any third parties from making headway.

if that is the case why do they not be up front and ask for that specific change instead of blocking it like that.

even if they did, the message did not reach very far.

I'll settle for freedom of speech

Tell me why corporations should get more rights than individuals.

and whoever answers 726...please include UNIONS in that answer...

Tell me why if you are a member of a union you won't have to pay taxes on your health insurance while the rest of us do.

because they vote democrat...almost exclusively..DAMN son...been in a coma.. :)

but this goes to heart of bigger issue from libs

CLASS warfare is one of couple of ways to rid the us of capitalist pigs and swine...and end of middle class while ELITES flourish...(see kerry boat tax story)...

I know this may come as a shocker, but is it possible the repubs blocking the bill is due to the way it is written? Aside from the fact there are exemptions which includes Unions and The Sierra Club, have we not seen a pattern of how this body in Congress writes legislation?

and of course I just touched on possibly one of the biggest hypocricy stories we have

RADICAL leftist here and all over HATE the captialist rich...but LOVE elitist like kerry and CLINTONS who are spending a half mill on FLOWERS alone this weekend......

more proof that garrison kieller is full of shit,...in book IM reading of his now..."homegrown democrat'....he says that its dems who are compassionate and for the poor and downtrodden..etc...

yeah right...as long as they can keep thier yachts in a state where taxes arent as high,..WHILE they will be raising ours considerably..

Not possible Crispee, the repubs are pigs who only look out for themselves and offer nothing good to society and want all poor people to die.

By just crafting this legislation this close to the Nov. elections proves that it is somewhat sketchy and is meant to help democrats at the polls.

In your dreams. This bill has been in the works since SCOTUS decided the Citizens United case.

Every voter should be up in arms over unlimited, secret campaign funding. Nowhere does this bill say corporations can't donate. It says we should be told who's behind ads.

You are a moron if you don't think the Dems wrote this to benefit themselves.

"yeah right...as long as they can keep thier yachts in a state where taxes arent as high,..WHILE they will be raising ours considerably.."

AFKABL2 thinks we believe he makes over $200K per year. Hilarious.

"CLASS warfare is one of couple of ways to rid the us of capitalist pigs and swine...and end of middle class while ELITES flourish...(see kerry boat tax story)..."

Forget the boat tax, the Kerry household will pay much more in income taxes after the tax cuts for the rich expire and Kerry supports the idea of letting it expire.

That is because Kerry and other elitist have so much money that they didn't earn by the way that an increase in taxes will not affect their lifestyle. "Luvey, where is my allowance?"

Forget the boat tax, the Kerry household will pay much more in income taxes after the tax cuts for the rich expire and Kerry supports the idea of letting it expire.

#39 | Posted by danni at 2010-07-28 12:07 PM

Let me get this straight... Kerry avoids paying thousands of dollars in taxes which he could easily afford, and now you think he won't try and do the same thing if the tax cuts expire? Based on what? His fucking word? He already said the boat issue is not an issue, after he caught of course. Are you really that gullible danni? Or is it just pure partisan blinkers? Maybe you are still trying to get that boat ride?

Republicans are not merely ugly, not merely pure evil, but dedicated only to one purpose - bringing the wheels of America to a grinding halt. I can see billionaires, who want to continue not paying their fair share of taxes, supporting this abomination. There is surely no reason for normal people to continue playing footsie with such vile critters. herm

"I can see billionaires, who want to continue not paying their fair share of taxes" says HERM.

What the hell is a "fair share" anyway? Which Obama Czar determines what a "fair share" going to be?

"What the hell is a "fair share" anyway? "

Well, in my book, at least the same percentage of income as a wage earner making $110,000.

What would it be in your book?

Glad to see this one go down in flames. Note that there was a specific exception for the NRA and other huge lobbying groups. Basically everyone else had to disclose, except for them. This was nothing more than another measure to keep entrenched interests in their positions of power.

I'm glad this was brought to the floor so that everyone understands who the "corporate" party really is. Voters won't forget who wants the wealthy to have a bigger say than everyone else.

this benefits unions too, so shut the fuck up

Dems up to their old tricks
#8 | Posted by libsrclueless at 2010-07-27 07:42 PM

You know, I used to feel the same way. Dems had Congress locked up for decades and created a virtual Iron Curtain of special rules that kept the Repubs from getting an edge. I hated them for it. I supported the Republicans basically for that reason. I also bought a little into the Republican Kool-Aide, mainly because they were the permanent minority party and none of their ideas were getting real airplay.

And then the Repubs broke through, got control and in just a couple very short years, showed me (and soooooo many others) what a fool I'd been. The Democrats were right along and I hope like hell that they can succeed with "their old tricks" in shoving the Republicans so far back into the closet that it'll take another forty years for them to get back out. Seriously.

Stock the Supreme Court with flaming liberals as fast as possible!

And then the Democrats have to start remember who the hell they actually are and who they represent because honestly, they all look like Republicans to me. That goes for Obama as well.

Glad to see this one go down in flames. Note that there was a specific exception for the NRA and other huge lobbying groups. ...

was that one of the concessions the D's made to the R's to try to get it passed?

Regardless of whatever it says in that bill, I'm glad the vote made the R's looks like assholes and THAT in turn will be another speed bump in their campaigns this year. And now I hope the Congress really will find and implement ways to hobble that perverse CU SCOTUS decision.

was that one of the concessions the D's made to the R's to try to get it passed?

No, this was about silencing the small players and the growing parties by increasing the length of political ads and, therefore increase the cost of airing them.

A 57-41 vote fell short of the 60 votes needed for the Senate to cut off debate on the measure. Republicans unanimously opposed the measure while Democrats solidly backed it.

fine keep debating it then. Don't give up. Call their bluff. It will get harder and harder for the NOPers to say NO as November approaches.

Forget the boat tax, the Kerry household will pay much more in income taxes after the tax cuts for the rich expire and Kerry supports the idea of letting it expire.

Stock the Supreme Court with flaming liberals as fast as possible!

This seems to be the only thing of lasting consequence we vote for in Presidential elections these days.

Why just Democrats? Why wouldn't this also help Republicans? Oh, that's right - they are corrupt filth who require dirty tricks and millions in propaganda.

And for what reasons would you prefer this reform to not pass?

By just crafting this legislation this close to the Nov. elections proves...

Nothing

It was in response to the Citizens United SCOTUS decision, which was only decided a few months ago.
