The 92,000 classified Afghan War documents, which were just released by Wikileaks tell the story of badly stretched U.S. forces trying to manage a complex task in Afghanistan while the Taliban, al-Qaeda and their allies in Pakistan regrouped along the border and became a dangerous adversary. A prime example of failed American strategy is what happened to Combat Outpost Keating.

Once again the label TOP SECRET is used, not to protect the USA from its enemies but to protect the President from the citizens!

Top Secret has usually been used to keep secrets from our enemies AND from us. The government does daily a ton of things the average person would find deplorable in the name of keeping us safe. If they admitted everything they did, none of us would support them. Ignorance is bliss sometimes.

Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg?

I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know.

That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives.

You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall.

We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it.

I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

We, as a nation, have determined we need not see the messes we bring upon ourselves. From car accidents - to war we turn away and let others handle it! When we see it we are appalled and react predictably!

This is why some use these means to modify behavior (Vietnam comes to mind, the burned little girl running down the by-way, the Vietnamese General shooting the Viet-Cong in the head on the bridge).

Things that should not truly be seen are exhibited for all. It is a crime, if it inflicts harm on those in the field, it should be punished as such!

Nothing in war is easy to look at, one reason it's called war. If it was we would fight more often!

Put the genie back in the box, this stuff, for the most part, is very old - rehashed garbage not fit for public consumption. Hang the SOB who stole it AND published it by their ankles in the town square for being this STUPID and go on about your business!

That might be the only Tom Cruise movie that was ever worth a shit.

I remember thinking, when Obama took office, that at least he'll get us out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Anyway, almost 28 months into Obama's presidency and he really hasn't changed any Bush policy. I guess he got rid of 'no child left behind' (kind of) but what else?

That might be the only Tom Cruise movie that was ever worth a shit.

Aaron Sorkin fucking rocks.

We're 18 months into Obama's presidency, not 28. Getting into wars and prancing around saying mission accomplished is a lot easier than getting out of them. The 45th to 50th presidents will probably still be dealing with the military and economic disasters of the 43rd.

obamas plan is not going to work?

'We're 18 months into Obama's presidency, not 28'

Yeah, my mistake.

But still, Obama said he would get us out by the end of August, 2010.

This leak sounds intentional to harm Pakistan/US relations and it doesn't do well for Obama.

U.S. 'on track' to meet Iraq troop reduction deadline of Aug. 31

"That might be the only Tom Cruise movie that was ever worth a shit."

I dunno... "Collateral" was pretty good.

Mozambique Drill also rocks!

Don't give me that shit. 50k remaining troops is far from ending combat missions in Iraq as Obama said (very plainly).

Speaking of Tom Cruise films... Minority Report was amazing. The best sci fi movie of the last ten years IMHO. That's also the movie where Colin Farrell had his break out performance as the DOJ cop.

Minority Report?? Amazing??

You're hopeless.

Siskel and Ebert voted it the best film of the year, the year it came out. It was pretty damn good.

Siskel died two years before Minority Report was released. I know Ebert is really 'fond' of Tom Cruise, so no surprise there.

Minority Report was amazing. The best sci fi movie of the last ten years IMHO.

I'd go with Enemy of the State. It was fiction, wasn't it?

...US Govt Propaganda by any other Name!

Wikileaks is really just another US Govt "Shill" that puts out the kind of self serving "Propaganda" (under a fraudulent Whistle Blower guise) that the US Govt has purposely "Requested" them to..."Leak"! Wikileaks should truthfully be called "CIA Leaks" !!!

Interesting to read the parts about Bush playing into bin laden's hands in Iraq. Reminds me of a documentary I saw that had the mullahs saying they wanted to keep the Embassy hostages to help Reagan get elected because he would help them keep control of the Iranians by playing tough-talking cowboy.
Republicans-the wackjobs of the world's bitch.

In fairness, both Bush and Obama botched/are botching Afghanistan...

All combat forces will be out of Iraq by August 31st.

SAMBARBER

Imagine if we'd stayed out of Iraq and put the necessary resources into Afghanistan when even Middle East countries were offering $'s and troops.

After so many years of Afghanis being let down by our effort (rightly so) many have lost trust in us.

When Obama was sworn in the Taliban had regained control of 80% of the country. Locals were afraid, and many still are, of being killed by theme for revenge.

"Minority Report was amazing."

Biggest problem with Minority Report?

Aaron Sorkin didn't write it.

Speaking of "enemy in the wire," the topic took me back to May 21, 1968, about eight km south of Hue, Vietnam. Sixty-five VC KIA in and a little inside our perimeter wire. Started out with an estimated 500 rounds of mixed mortar and rocket fire (inbound) over a six-hour period that began just after midnight; followed by a ground attack where the 101st Airborne and 3rd Marine base camp perimeters abutted. We stacked the bodies like cord wood (similar to the closing scene in the movie, "We Were Soldiers") for removal.

Dude, you're awesome ;)

I tell people I think he is our Shakespeare. His ability to convey all the sides of our social and political conditions/nightmares in a witty, thought provoking manner is unmatched by any novel or script writer. He turns bad actors into Toby Zieglers and Will Baileys.

Some of those early West Wing teleplays, "Proportional Response", "Dead Irish Writers", "Celestial Navigation", "And Surely its ti Their Credit", "Two Cathedrals"....should be kept in the Library of Congress vault.

And Sport's Night what a great series that was, the only sit-com I've ever liked.

Minority Report was amazing. The best sci fi movie of the last ten years IMHO.

It was going to be a decent movie... right up until the Spielberg ending.
It wasn't bad enough that Tom Cruise didn't shoot.
He had to quit his drug habit, get back with his estranged wife, and impregnate her all over again?
It made me throw up in my mouth a little bit.

Frankly I thought the remake of Solaris was better.
