In a ceremony in Prague, President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a "New START" treaty that administration officials say will bring U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals to their lowest levels since the early 1960s. The White House says the treaty will reduce the number of long-range deployed nuclear warheads by 30%, while also taking the two nations several strides forward in overall relations.

Now what about N. Korea and China?

#1 - They will see how much concern we have and our understanding of the subtle nuances of...

Naw they won't change anything.

I feel much safer already.

You should.

"Obama tells world his war strategies"

These reductions consist of obsolete nukes that would no longer be used anyway.

It's going to be great fun watching people flip out and scream how unsafe they are with only 1,550 nukes protecting them. Duck and cover!

Exatly what is the point?
We will still have enough to destroy the world a few times over.
It will just cost us money to dispose of them.
They are not hurting anybody just laying around.

Is he going to store them in Nevada once Harry gets the boot?

“A nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought. The only value in our two nations possessing nuclear weapons is to make sure they will never be used. But then would it not be better to do away with them entirely?”

- Ronnie Raygun.

My how the "Raygun Conservatives" are so anti Raygun.

Obama's not "doing away with them entirely." We will only be a nuke free world when we replace them with a newer technology also capable of destroying everything on earth.

Trimming down the stock pile is good, and getting Russians to do it even better, but pretending this somehow means were on the road to being "nuke free" is hilarious.

LOD,

As long as we are susceptable to nuclear annihalation, we can never get rid of all our nukes. That much is certain. MAD is the only deterrent to a first strike.

But reducing our levels by not building new ones is a good thing.

Both when Raygun said it and now.

It still has to get past the senate. I bet it doesn't, as elections are nearing.

It is my understanding that research and developement of new (technology) nukes is being stopped. Just like when Obama stopped the further R and D on new war planes.

Yep I feel safer ... because Our Enemies are stopping their R and D too. Right?

I see the conservatives are scared about something new. Must be tough to go through life always being frightened... Don't you guys have supply-side Jesus backing you?

Just like when Obama stopped the further R and D on new war planes.

Link please. Or stfu.

That's wonderful. Now we only have enough to blow up the entire world fifty times over. Way better than a hundred times over.

I say point a few at western Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan and push the big red button already!

Smiley, you got any real proof that 'Obama' stopped all further R&D on Warplanes?

Canceling the F-22 is hardly 'stopping all further R&D'.

You should.

Yes, now we only have the power to destroy the world 23 times over. Mmmmmm... let the safety wash over you.

Russia vs. The United States in a nuclear war is never going to happen, nor will it happen between us and any other major nuclear power. Mutually Assured Destruction is the single greatest contributer to world peace. As long as we have enough nukes to destroy each other, we won't go to war. They're not the problem. The problem is a country like Iran for example, lead by religious extremists that may believe using a nuke will get them to heaven.

Sounds like the F-35 might have some rocky times ahead, and the tactical laser program sounds like its going to have its funding cut. That one really sucks... that laser is the shit. I don't know if that's specifically Obama though, but he sure doesn't seem to be pushing for it.

Obama was interviewed by ABC today. In the interview The President was asked about criticism from Sarah Palin of the new nuclear weapons policy he recently announced.

Obama stated: "What I would say to them is, is that if the secretary of defense and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff are comfortable with it, I'm probably going to take my advice from them and not from Sarah Palin."

I was at a protest march at the GOP convention in Detroit in 1980 where we fought in the street against a right wing youth group called YAF.

I was arrested for spray painting STOP RAYGUN on the side of the convention center.

Yes, now we only have the power to destroy the world 23 times over.

Can't have any radioactive zombies coming back after the nuclear holocaust.

Lets all glow in the dark like it's 1959!

So it took Obama to realize Reagan's dreams and promises.

Wow! Maybe we can sell our left over nukes to Toyota. I'm sure they could devise a plan to fix the gas pedal problem forever.

I don't have a problem with the reduction in nukes.

What I have a problem with is the new, lack-of ambiguity on when we might deploy nukes as a retaliatory measure. NEVER show your hand when it comes to something like this.

I don't think the senate will ratify this treaty and that is truly sad as PART of it is good. Too bad they can't 'line-item-veto' the parts of this deal that they disagree with.

Obama's attempt to reduce nuclear proliferation shows real results?

Lemme get this straight.

Within the first 16 months of being elected Obama has managed to pass one of the most significant pieces of progressive legislation since the New Deal, slowed the arms race, ended extraordinary rendition, gotten a woman of color on the SCOTUS, restored much of America's reputation on the world stage and is now winding down the Iraq war while utilizing a more realistic strategy in Afghanistan?

How's that "Hopey Changey" thing working out?

Pretty damn well.

Thanx fer askin'.

How's that "Hopeless Rut" thing going fer you?

The GOP are anti-tolerance, anti-science, anti-intellectual, anti-choice, anti-immigrant, anti-regulation, anti-progress and anti-truth.

Basically they've become the political equivalent of a spoiled 5 year old threatening to hold their breath till they turn blue if they don't get their way.

Good luck with THAT in the fall.

Be Well.

here is a fun fact i heard on NPR the other morning concerning the number of "tactical" nukes that either country can have deployed; A Stealth bomber counts as 1 deployed weapon even though it may be carrying 10(or whatever number) warheads.

Russia has said it could opt out of the new treaty if it feels threatened by the US missile defense and the Kremlin reaffirmed Thursday that the treaty only has "life" if US limits missile defense.
those wiley russians.we will reduce are nukes from 750 to 600 the russians will reduce 0 nukes because they have under 600 now.great deal.

This is so much public PR garbage.
the nukes they use now are 500% more desructive than the 60's ever had. Just a big joke.

Long Range are totally ineffective now, with our interception capabilities, looks good, just a sham

It was too expensive to keep up some silos

This makes war more likely. The only way to combat short range missiles is to strike first.

we have moved closer to the end now.

When Senate Republicans play politics with this treaty they should be seen as the partisan hacks that they are....and they will play politics because they ALWAYS put party before country.
Legitimate objections to the treaty are one thing but many Rs will vote against the treaty purely out of partisan gamesmanship.

Spare us the bull shit. Gitmo's still open and even if he follows through with closing it, Bagram is still open and I haven't heard him talking about closing that site. The CIA renditions continue. We still have the Patriot Act and the Obama justice department shilling for Bush's abuses of power. And escalating the war in Afghanistan - we can't afford it and more people will die - for what? So we can save face from Bush's fuck up? And on Iraq he's just following through with the status of forces agreement set in place during the previous administration. Hardly a sea change.

I will give him a net positive on HCR, however.

Spare us the bull shit. Gitmo's still open and even if he follows through with closing it, Bagram is still open and I haven't heard him talking about closing that site.

Gitmo is no longer taking new prisoners and they are in the process of trying the few remaining prisoners.

Nobody is saying don't use it as a base just don't use it in a lame attempt to circumvent international law the way BushCo did.

The CIA renditions continue.

Spare Spud the bullshiat. Extraordinary renditions as practised under Bush have been eliminated under Obama and now yer back to the process as practised by several previous POTUSes.

We still have the Patriot Act and the Obama justice department shilling for Bush's abuses of power.

Parts of the Patriot Act have been allowed to expire so it's not a complete wash and yeah Spud is pissed that Dumbya hasn't being brought up on charges but quite frankly never really expected it. Did you?

And escalating the war in Afghanistan

He campaigned on putting more resources in Afghanistan and going after AQ based in Pakistan which is exactly wot he's done.

we can't afford it and more people will die - for what? So we can save face from Bush's fuck up?

So we can minimize the worst blowback from Bush fuck-up, yes.

And on Iraq he's just following through with the status of forces agreement set in place during the previous administration. Hardly a sea change.

Considering the GOPhers running in 2008 were promising "Double Gitmos" and even more wasted dollars on both wars it's definitely an improvement.

Obama's accomplishments in his first 16 months in office are nothing short of remarkable.

Be Well.

Nothing about Bagram. Got it.

Didn't say he didn't campaign on it.

Right, we're going to defy history and Afghanistan will be a shimmering beacon of hope and Democracy for that part of the world. That would be remarkable.

He's not just not being brought up on charges, he's being protected. By Obama's justice department. Good ole "state secrets" arguments.

WASHINGTON -- Despite President Obama's vow to open government more than ever, the Justice Department is defending Bush administration decisions to keep secret many documents about domestic wiretapping, data collection on travelers and U.S. citizens, and interrogation of suspected terrorists.

lol-worthy

what good is nuclear deterrence if everyone knows that - when push comes to shove - you won't use them to even retaliate?

It is only a deterrence to other nuke powers. MAD does work, but not against the suicidal.

"Long Range are totally ineffective now, with our interception capabilities..."

You ARE kidding, right?

Another liberal's wet dream. B0 is the most radical, naive, Columbia University faculty boob of a president in history. The only good thing about this person is that he looks black. How embarrassing...he'll kill us all.

The military brass supports the President in this new articulation of policy. Doesn't that undermine what all the rightwingers are whining about?
They just can't stand seeing President Obama enjoy paradigm changing success after success.

Can you cite for me evidence of the last time military brass didn't support any CIC on articulation of policy? (at least, before retirement)...
