Ya except that they lost the right to be scout leaders, so theoretically they were all "straight"...

I was never abused as a scout. However it doesn't suprise me that it could happen. What suprises me is that any scout would allow it to happen more than once. Most of the kids in our troop would have cut a molesters balls off. We didn't walk around with pen knives but big f'n bowie knives that we sharpened when boared or practiced throwing at trees. Honestly if we were walking in a dark alley I imagine the thugs were more afraid of us than we were of them. Then again we were kids and still belived in our own imortality.

I just don't understand the mentality of "it's happening, but if we hide it maybe it'll go away" that the Boy Scouts of America seem to have in this case. Do boy scouts get abused? Yes (although it's debatable whether they're more at risk than other portions of the population). So why doesn't BSA address it and learn how to deal with it? If they addressed the issue and did something about child molesters, then the public would at least see that BSA is attempting to curb abuse. Instead they try to hide it and eventually end up looking complicit.

Agreed. I've both been a scout ('til 15, then girls became more interesting) and was an assistant scout master for a short time (before I went to college), and never saw anything that remotely suggested abuse in the troops I was in. So it's not like this issue is occurring at every scout meeting. However, BSA needs to admit that it does happen and attempt to put stronger controls to prevent or at least minimize the risk of it occurring. They've made a start with 2-deep leadership, but it needs to go beyond that.

I was in scouts for a short while in the mid 70's. My friends Father was the scout leader. After I left I learned that he had been arrested on molestation charges. His wife divorced him but I do not recall whatever came of it. (Oh, and yes, they were a 'good' Mormon family)

Years later I was working with a guy who's child was molested by the Mormon Church janitor. It was all handled thru the Bishop with NO police contact.

The way I see it is if you have a man who is by nature attracked to other men some are gonna be attracted to boys. Where as a man who is attracted to women won't be a problem in that area. But, still you dems want us to let gays be scout leaders.

KBM, please show me an extensive record of pedophilia or statutory rape in the public school system. Please show me evidence that homosexual teachers (I think you're making the common mistake that pedophiles are gay) are more guilty of these crimes than are heterosexual teachers.

And then show me where the public school system has hidden such things, or where the NEA has protected such crimes/behaviors.

If you can't do any of those things, you're just being an asshole. In all my time in public schools, as a student and as a teacher--oh, and as a union leader (NEA)--I have never seen nor heard of abuse of little boys in my district. Of course, we've all heard of inappropriate or criminal behavior in schools, just as in hospitals, churches, nonprofit organizations, and other places where children and adults commonly interact. Oh, yeah, and in the halls of Congress, even in GOP offices. (gasp)

Oh, and Buzkiller makes the same mistake--conflating gays and pedophiles. From whatever I've read about the matter, it's more often straight men who are pedophiles.
