Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

As part of its effort to deal with the budget squeeze caused by the economic downturn, some school districts around the country have begun placing advertisements on school buses. "We thought this would bring a few shekels to the school boards," said Washington state Sen. Paull Shin, who proposed a statewide bill to sell such ads.

Great idea! Perhaps have Dora the Explorer demonstrating use on a banana! Get a little spanish lesson in there too.

I think you're on to something.

I don't love this idea, but it certainly is creative.

They could save a lot more money, at least around here if they would make school bus riding more fiscally attractive to the parents of all these spoiled little kiddies. Buses run up and down my street every day with one or two kids on them. If you have to drive past any school at arrival or dismissal time you're stuck forever waiting on the parents to pick up the precious little crotchfruit. Each school should issue Drop Off/Pickup permits that cost $100 a month except for valid reasons or emergencies (Dr. appt and such). If you show up without the permit or valid reason it costs $20 to turn into the school.

It would save gas, time, pollution, salarys for those that have to man the pickup locations and might teach kids some social lessons.

they should make the kids walk, uphill, both ways, just like the good ole' days

You aren't going to believe this...

A link in my IndustrialDesign class had this, to "investigate" its design, marketing...

I could see this ad on a school bus...

HAha! That's frickin' jacked up, Andrea....or is it jacked-of......

School districts say it's practically free money, and advertisers love the captive audience that school buses provide.

Well at least we're edging closer towards an honest statement about the true purpose of education in this country today -- to breed an unquestioning, docile consumer class.

"they may distract drivers and lead to accidents,"

How is an ad placed on the outside of the bus going to distract the driver?

one more reason to encourage home schooling

Wozzit?

S'rsly?

That's farking hilarious.

WTF does the ad mean by "6 different styles"?

Looks like a "one size fits all" pret a port kinda thing. No?

Actually, ya know wot. Don't answer that.

Ad was already TMI.

On Topic?

Ads on buses?

Better than sugary snacks and pop on premises in terms of bringing in the extra sheckels.

Be Well.

How long till we're debating whether advocacy ads should be allowed?

Should advocacy ads be allowed?

/Apparently not too long. :>P

Be Well.

They can always lay off teachers and administrators, or cut wages and benefits. Eventually, they're going to have to both as this depression wears on.

My sister in law just lost her teaching job due to cutbacks in her district.

Having been on budget committees in our district, I understand the need to be creative when it comes to raising money.

I hope the ads will be age appropriate.

I hope the ads will be age appropriate.

Agreed.

We can but hope that Jack Daniels or Madison.com or Tenga eggs don't apply fer ad space.

I'm hoping the school board is smarter than that, Spud!!

Thinking about crawling back to bed for a bit.

Although we plan on biking to the park for a picnic today and I have things to do before we go so I should probably not think about climbing those stairs!

Not getting to much accomplished sitting here though huh?! LOL

I've been doing fantastic, Spud!! How are you?

Spud's still baskin' in the glow of the Gold Medal Hockey Final, Thank ya very much! ^_^

/Also still slightly hungover from St Paddy's Day.

Hyper-caffeinated and deeply sleepy to boot.

biking to the park for a picnic

Huzzah fer bikes and picnics! Plenty good fun.

A quick glance at the days headlines at the ole Tort is always time well wasted.

;.)

And some folks said that America was no longer the land of opportunity.

Vinyl signs on sale to school districts across the nation!

This is beyond wrong. Children are advertised to enough in our society; school and school venues are simply not appropriate. As a media educator and English teacher, I am appalled. As a parent, I am appalled. There's tons of research out there on how harmful this is. The FTC should increase regulation of advertising to kids, not increase it. How about this for a creative solution: Sell licenses to drug dealers and sex traders, and open up the schoolyards. Easy. Won't have to cut anyone's wages, and the children will be docile (well, depending on the drugs, I suppose). (I think Jonathan Swift might have some valuable advice for us here.)

Capitalism attempts to commodify everything. A budget shortfall is just as good excuse as anything. Maybe they can purchase school uniforms at a discount with a big McDonald's logo on the front and back.

I say we paint the buses white, like milk cartons, and put "Have you seen me?" ads on them.

I'd be all for the "ads on a bus" if they had to do with health, wellness or education but other than that, I'd probably be against them.

"I say we paint the buses white, like milk cartons, and put "Have you seen me?" ads on them."

Now that is funny. Would that all the other media educators I know had such a sense of humor. They might be able to do some pretty effective (or at least funny) counter-advertising...

Really, on buses paid for by our taxes?

And one interesting thing: the First Amendment argument. Really? Well, shit, CCFC and allies effectively applied pressure last year; maybe Josh and the gang can do it again. If organized citizens can get books banned, why can't organized citizens kill advertising?

"Really, on buses paid for by our taxes?"

Well, Briwo, it's American capitalism at its finest. Fuck the kids, fuck responsibility, and claim that the gov't should have nothing to do with business.

This is not creative problem-solving; this is a creative attack on children, buying new consumers before they're old enough to know better.

Where are the people who keep complaining about education and kids being taught (or not taught, they accuse) to think. If we tell them that they should be part of a moving advertisement, how is that teaching them to think?

"they may distract drivers and lead to accidents,"

We already have wrappers on city buses. And cars. And trucks.

"Really, on buses paid for by our taxes?"

So this works to allow companies to voluntarily add money to the school board coffers instead of taking it via taxes. Good idea.

The tricky part is when we outsource the bus routes to Mexico.

"So this works to allow companies to voluntarily add money to the school board coffers instead of taking it via taxes. Good idea."

How do corporate earnings relate to school funding? In my experience, the vast majority (if not all) of school funding comes from property taxes. So if businesses own property and are being taxed, and they are also paying for advertising, they're being hit once and they're volunteering once. If they're not taxed on property they own, then your argument is out the window anyway.

Further, do you believe in local determination of education or some larger scale? If the former, I have this to say: Is the advertising by local merchants/companies? I doubt it--they probably can't afford it. And if they can, we're back to the idea that there's no real gain in prostituting our buses (or children, if you want to go that far). This is little better than FirstBus or Channel One.

Oh, and my guess on the person who brought up buses paid for by taxes? Probably pissed that we're selling out to business again and probably wondering why we're not putting ads on city halls or town offices while we're at it.
