Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Thursday, March 18, 2010

More than 100 drivers in Austin, Texas found their cars disabled or the horns honking out of control, after an intruder ran amok in a web-based vehicle-immobilization system normally used to get the attention of consumers delinquent in their auto payments.

The dealership used a system called Webtech Plus as an alternative to repossessing vehicles that haven't been paid for. Operated by Cleveland-based Pay Technologies, the system lets car dealers install a small black box under vehicle dashboards that responds to commands issued through a central website, and relayed over a wireless pager network. The dealer can disable a car's ignition system, or trigger the horn to begin honking, as a reminder that a payment is due. The system will not stop a running vehicle.

Hack the planet!

We should protest the "solution" to this problem by flinging bags of human blood at the legislator's house, like the Thai would do.

Fucking imbecile, there isn't even a legislator involved in this story.

This happened in Texas? Maybe they all suddenly forgot how to drive.

As a Floridiot, I love Texas! It ain't easy to make my state look smart. Way to go Texas!

Another unintended consequence. Surely Texas Auto Center will happily reimburse all customers for towing, repairs and lost wages for work missed.

What if PayTeck's black box goes haywire and shuts your car down while on an interstate with a 19 wheeler right behind you? What if a dealer drums up business by giving the debtor a temporary code so the ignition system fails every morning after a few days so the customer brings the car in stating car starting problems? Or what if your child needs to be taken to the hospital and the car's ignition has been disabled? There are a lot of unintended consequences.

I hope this dealership gets sued for every penny the idiots have.

Installation of this device is beyond irresponsible.

Installation of this device is beyond irresponsible.

You would think so.

As I heard it, the guy that did it was a disgruntled and/or former employee.

Has anybody ever heard of a gruntled employee?

I used to be gruntled.

If you could install electronic warfare like fighter planes have in your car you could send out beams that would disable, for example, the car that is chasing you. But to be really careful you would have to have your on board computer shielded against countermeasures. Then again, how do you know that somebody unknown to you might be employing disabling high intensity rays somewhere that you are just innocently driving along? You need shielding on your car computer system! Stop by the spy shop and we'll set you up.
