Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Surging demand for shark fin soup among Asia's booming middle classes is driving many species of these big fish to the brink of extinction, the marine conservation group Oceana said Tuesday. Up to 73 million sharks are killed each year, primarily to make soup out of their fins.

Yummy!

And the meat is punched into scallops.....

Yummy!

Delicious!

And the shark muscle is punched into "scallops" and sold as the same...

Not that sharks elicit sympathy from anyone, but to throw their entire carcass into the ocean as they do after cutting off the fins is completely wasteful.

Shark steaks are tasty.

Blame it on global warming.

The great extinction as a result of climate change.

If we can only hold the planet temperature down these sharks will be able to swim without those tasty fins.

This is a horrible practice and should be stopped. A raping of the seas.

Sharks are very slow breeders, and to kill them soley for the fins, and then to kick them off the deck is IDIOTIC. It should be outlawed internationally.

Wow! We agree on something!

Watch "The Cove" - a documentary about the annual slaughter of dolphins in Japan.

"The Cove - TRAILER

Clearly a new use for Lawyers....substitute a Lawyer for every Shark-not much difference 'twixt 'em anyway!

Not so surprising AU. I am a recreational fisherman, and most all recr. fishermen believe in conservation. This slaughter is an unsustainable act of lunacy, motivated by the lure of money.

I'm a recreational fisherman too, Dave.

The needless slaughter of anything like shark and dolphins is wasteful and inhumane.

Don't weep for the sharks. They're fin-ished.

Not that sharks elicit sympathy from anyone

They do from me.

They are vital to the delicate-balance of the food-chain. They are also the most perfectly designed animal in earth's history.

They far pre-date dinosaurs yet have evolved very little. They are perfectly-suited to their environment.

Calling the ancient cultural practice of the peaceful and wise Near Eastern peoples names such as "cruel" and "inhumane" is racist and insensitive. The beautiful traditions of these native peoples is part of their cultural heritage. Your ignorance of their majestic history sickens me.

Or am I supposed to be outraged at the senseless plunder of the world's natural resources by the callous actions of humanity? I can't decide.

I thought Asians have a wisdom bordering on the supernatural that makes them the most patient long term thinkers on this planet.

Surely they wouldn't do anything as shortsightedly stupid as fish sharks, tunas, whales, etc to extinction....

That's what you get for thinking with a prejudicial mindset. It ain't the Asians, it's capitalism and modern technology that's depleting the worlds natural resources faster then it can regenerate. This is just the tip of the iceberg. The entire planet is in peril and those most able to help are sitting on their fat behinds. Just look around here. The majority of posters now are uncaring know nothings when it comes to environmental issues. Environmentalists are now demonic atheist according to the right wing hacks. Get a life.

Here is a perfect example of 'an uncaring know nothing' I was referring to in #16.

Don't weep for the sharks. They're fin-ished.

Here is another one.

The shark has been villified to the point that people will cheer this. Perfection in evolution is hard for most to handle.

"That's what you get for thinking with a prejudicial mindset."

I realize that sarcasm is somewhat difficult to decipher at times in this format, but in this case I tought it was pretty obvious that I was being sarcastic.

STFU Ringworm.

" Perfection in evolution is hard for most to handle."

I think with perfection in evolution a great number less would be dinner.

73 millions!
Soup must be mm mm mm tasty.
By the way, among the options to flag a comment "dull" should be included, a space between newsworthy and ofensive.
Aint gonna specify who, in this article, inspired my idea.
