We've closely monitored how words spoken into a phone can be instantly translated into various languages. (See David Sarno's recent article about Google's new phone application.) What you may not know yet, however, is that researchers have now developed a way for people to communicate by speaking into a phone silently by simply moving their lips.

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany is behind the new developments that are enabling people to hold phone conversations in complete silence.

I can already imagine long conversations in the middle of a crowded movie theater or opening night at a play. What kind of sound will the shushers make to get silent talkers to stop?

I use a cell phone jammer, when I go to the movies.

If I forget to turn it on, it's funny when someone gets/makes a call, and I'm reminded to hit the power switch. It works well against texting too.

Silent phone? Isn't that like having a dark light bulb or scentless incense?

That's why I don't go to theaters any longer - the last three times ugly fights broke out. I don't have the patience to wait the adrenaline out during the film afterwards - it's torturous. It's best if I don't attend where assholes trend.

As for the silent phone - sounds good?

You lived through the 60's and never heard of a black light?

So would I be able to point this thing at someone nearby who is using one silently and have their words transcribed effortlessly onto my phone?

What if I pointed one at a Secret Service guy talking into his cuff link?

This could get troublesome quickly.

Are you kidding?

Them Secret Service guys is world renowned fer their excellent sense of humour about such things.

They'll prolly have a good laugh and maybe buy you a beer in the process.

Be Well.
