The newest inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are ABBA, Genesis, Iggy Pop's Stooges, The Hollies and Jimmy Cliff. "I'm very angry that Madonna got in before us," joked ABBA singer Anni-Frid Lyngstad.

BOOOOO

There Must Be Some Misunderstanding.
There Must Be Some Kind Of Mistake.

I can see adding Peter Gabriel to the HoF, but not Genesis. Apologies to Messrs. Rutherford and Banks, but Phil Collins really drags down the prestige.

The Stooges flat out rock. One of the few bands that epitomize rock 'n' roll.

Abba can hardly be considered "rock 'n' roll". Maybe a little "roll", but absolutely no "rock". But I guess it's the best the Swedes can do.

Genesis was a great band for their first 8 albums...then they decided to go for airplay.

"...but Phil Collins really drags down the prestige."

Phil was great as long as he stayed behind the drum kit.

The Stooge's?

Did they ever work for Panther Brewery?

Genesis was a great band for their first 8 albums...then they decided to go for airplay.

Agreed.

And this shit replays itself time and time again.

It's happened with Coldplay (their 1st 2 albums were great) and it's happening with Muse.

Hats' off to groups like Radiohead and Pink Floyd* that stayed true to their music.

*The Floyd DID get a bit more 'mainstream' when Roger Waters left the band, but I never viewed that as the remaining band-members seeking 'airplay'. Waters was the primary architect of their most influential stuff; when he left the band a fair amount of that innovation left as well. While I think both Waters and the Floyd (without Waters) produced some pretty good stuff post The Final Cut, I believe that together they might have had another Wish You Were Here-caliber album within them. None of their stuff post-Waters was as good as Wish You Were Here; which arguably wasn't as good as 'Dark Side of the Moon' or 'The Wall' (Although it is a personal favorite for me).

Hell, at my wedding reception, the 1st song me and my new bride danced to was Wish You Were Here.

Iggy Pop is one of the greatest rockers of all time!

Still stage diving in his 60's.

Congratulations to the AMERICAN CEASAR!

Oh....Jimmy Cliff and The Hollies are deserving as well.

Looks like Jimmy was right; maybe you can get it if you really want it.

And along with many others, The Hollies' "Look Through Any Window" was a great song.

Glad to see The Hollies and Jimmy Cliff get some well-deserved recognition.

Hollies before Genesis, that's for sure.
Good for The Stooges. Also should have been Mott the Hoople instead of ABBA.

The Stooges - Down On The Street

Any band that meets the minimal requirements for entry has a good chance of being inducted.

Wow, Wizdog.

Fer a complete jackass, you've got surprisingly good musical taste.

Genesis - Back in NYC

hey!

ABBA? WTF?

And KISS isn't in. You may not like KISS but they deserve Hall of Fame over ABBA in any universe.

This is right up there with Tull winning best Heavy Metal over Metallica back in 88 or 89.

Jimmy Cliff - Vietnam

Wow, Wizdog.

Whatever, Richard Cheese.

I'm disappointed that The Heavy wasn't inducted. "How You Like Me Now" is greatness.

I didn't realize Kiss wasn't in. I never cared much for them, but they do deserve it more than ABBA or Genesis.

The only thing historically noteworthy about ABBA would seem to be their origin. Apparently they were rather unpopular in Sweden because they represented something the Swedes didn't understand. I've just heard bits and pieces of what that whole scene was like, but it sounds like it could make a good tale.

KISS is pure garbarge... but they still should be in the hall of fame before abba and genisis..
whos next?...
neil diamond or is he already in

ABBA???? Is this the rock and roll hall of fame or the easy listening hall of fame?

#22, Abba is more like euro techno pop. Not bad if you're in the mood but they were popular back in the day.

I didn't like KISS that much but they certainly worked their way up by playing tons of concerts and giving fans enough flash that they've kept coming back for more.

Out of all the bands inducted into the HoF last night the two that have most influenced Spud would be The Stooges and Genesis.

Obviously prefer the prog rawk version with Peter Gabriel to the more radio friendly but less intellectually interesting version of the group with Collins as lead singer.

Foxtrot remains a spuddish staple to this day.

Iggy and the Stooges are purely electrifying live. Too bad Ron Ashton didn't live to see the day.

As to Abba getting in Spud finds it appropriate enough. Remember seeing an interview with Kurt Cobain talking to Nardwuar the Human Serviette a few years back. He was talking about being on the tail end of a long tour when the only album the entire band could still agree on listening to in the tour bus being "Abba Gold".

Jimmy Cliff is a long time fave as well.

His live performance plus the Stooges woulda been the highlights of the night's events by Spud's lights.

Still no love fer April Wine?

Wow, rock and roll really is a vicious game.

Be Well.

/Setting his electric kazoo on fire and playing a seriously frakked up version of "Passenger" the tater o' doom is enter the Retort
stage left.

Whut!

No Tater-love fer Graham Nash and the Hollies?

Hall of Fame lost its Rock standing long ago. It is the Popular Music Hall of Fame, and that is fine.

The Stooges RAWK! Pure, hard, noisy, lots of attitude and swagger and spittle and sweat. Some of Iggy's solo stuff rocks as well ("I'm Bored," for example), and he's still a feisty rock & roller.

Phish paid tribute to both Genesis generations, performing the meandering "Watcher of the Skies" and the pop hit "No Reply At All."

Coolness

larry, moe and curly made it at last

Still no love fer April Wine?

I'd be cool with that selection as long as Sweet gets in too.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is the most under-appreciated prog rock piece ever composed. It is also indicative of what direction the band would have moved had Gabriel hung around. I think of one track in particular - 'The Waiting Room' which during the sessions was referred to as 'The Evil Jam'. The last 4 minutes of the track they let loose and truly jam. Probably the only time they ever did that and it puts any other 'jam' I have ever heard completely to shame.

There was an edge, a darkness to their sound that was lost once Gabriel left. I also believe that due to the audaciousness of the performances in that day (think Musical Box-old man simulating intercourse with the mike stand) the band has as much as possible tried to bury those memories. Its a shame because those live performances were some of the tightest and most entertaining ever done.

There are a few bootleg DVD's out there to be had if you know where to look. Peter Gabriel was definitely a showman extraordinaire.

#30 - Ha! Love the Sweet. "Ballroom Blitz," anyone?

April Wine resigned their Rock and Roll commission when they released "If You See Kay". That would have been a stupid gimmick for a Country song.

April Wine did a song called "If You See Kay?" I remember in college a band called the Poster Children did one and it was awesome.

And
If You See Kay
Tell her that
I said
DIE!

"Ballroom Blitz," anyone?

Krokus version. I know, I know.

2 words.

THE SONICS!!!!!!!

#34 - Kanrei - love the Poster Children! and that song. Here 'tis, in super high fidelity: www.posterchildren.com

Thanks for that link CB. I have not heard that song in years.

I'm disappointed that The Heavy wasn't inducted. "How You Like Me Now" is greatness.

Tru dat.

Kewl beans, indeed.

HYLMN ~ The H

That noted, most inductees into the HoF are well past their "best before" date.

No Tater-love fer Graham Nash and the Hollies?

Wha? Aha, Spud is be remiss.

Easily fixed.

Spud's got much luff fer G Nash & the Hollies...

The Air That I Breathe

~The Hollies w/ Nash live 1983 re-union concert.

I'd be cool with that selection as long as Sweet gets in too

Sweet are sweet. Also good stuff.

Ballroom Blitz is a classic as well as...

Fox on the Run

~The Sweet.

"You - you talk about just every band
But the names you drop are second hand
I've heard it all before
I - don't wanna know your name
'Cause you don't look the same
The way you did before"

Be Well.

I remember that at one point ABBA were grossing more money than the entire Swedish GDP.

Well, good for you punkin!

I'm not a KISS fan, but ABBA?

I was not, and am not, an ABBA fan.

Just making a comment about how much money they made.

Know who didn't get inducted again? Hmmm?

Red Hot Chili Peppers, that's who.

RHCP will never get in they don't conform to any music standards.

Shame one of the few bands that I still love every time they reinvent themselves.

TAO

I'd bet they will. They only recently crossed the 25 year threshold for consideration.

What about staind, nickleback and dave matthews? do you like those bands?

I don't think they belong in the HofF now, but someday...

PBS has a great show on now featuring 80 and 90 year olds singing rock songs. One 92 year old lady, who sang the Clash's "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" in front of thousands was asked how she now liked the group. She said, "well, now that I know who they are I LOVE THEM!."

Stooges Join Rock Hall of Fame

Moe, Larry & Curley and even Shemp where great...Didn't care for Joe Besser though...:)

Loved their alphabet tune E-I icky by E-I-O, Icky I-O-UH

"What about staind, nickleback and dave matthews"

25 years since their first album until they're eligible. And, no.
