Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, 89, says that he will decide next month whether he will continue his tenure next year. "Well, I still have my options open," he said. "When I decided to just hire one clerk, three of my four clerks last year said they'd work for me next year if I wanted them to." Stevens has said that he will definitely retire within the next three years.

Stevens is one of the more involved Justices and it will be interesting to see who he is replaced with.

makes the filibuster discussion a little more interesting

You better believe things will get interesting if he announces his retirement before the 2010 elections.

Hopefully, by the end of his second term President Obama will appoint four justices.

Stevens is a good egg but 89 is getting up there.

Hopefully the Dem's sekret Ruth Bader-Ginsberg cloning project is coming to a rapid and successful conclusion.

RBG RAWKS!

Be Well.

Obama needs to find a female black handicapped liberal pregnant lesbian. That way, all the bases are covered.

If Cynthia McKinney would just fall down a flight of stairs and then get knocked up...

Wouldn't it be unfortunate if Clarence Thomas or Antonin Scalia suddenly were forced to retire?

Hopefully, by the end of his second term President Obama will appoint four justices.

Only in your dreams.

Or if they cancelled the syndication of Fantasy Island?

I think it's too early to say that Obama cannot be reelected. Look at Clinton in 92-93. If the economy turns around and unemployment is hovering around 8% in 2012 I think he has a shot. However, I don't think he has a shot at nominating 4 Justices unless the rapture happens and Roberts, Alito, Scalia, and Thomas all go to heaven.

He has already appointed Sotomayor. Stevens will be stepping down if not this year, then next year. I would not be shocked if RBG, Scalia, Breyer or Kennedy stepped down within the next seven years.

It's not much of a story unless he nominates a completely unqualified whackjob, which he won't. He will be replacing a lefty with another lefty. If for some unexpected reason Obama gets to replace a conservative justice, that is a story.

I would not be shocked if RBG, Scalia, Breyer or Kennedy stepped down within the next seven years.

Doesn't matter as to the makeup of the Court unless it's Scalia or Kennedy, and I don't think either of them would willingly retire while Obama was president.

...unless the rapture happens and Roberts, Alito, Scalia, and Thomas all go to heaven.

You have to be Christian to be raptured.

Alito and Scalia are Catholics.

Thomas is Umbanda.

Joe: Perhaps they will retire unwillingly...

Perhaps they will retire unwillingly...

By Chicago mobsters?

To quote Johnny Cash, the father hen may call his chickens home.

Jello Biafra gets my vote.

Kennedy (73) and Scalia (74) are the two oldest conservative Justices. Neither will retire willingly under Obama.

I think it's only right that Obama appoints another colored.

I bet he appoints an asian.

Thomas is Umbanda.

Thomas is Catholic.

You are an idiot.

Boy, you're new meat. Youre gonna have to shape up fast and hard for this gang. We got rules here. In order to learn em, you gotta do more work with your ears than with your mouth."

I bet he appoints a white woman. Black dudes love white women (see Tiger Woods, Justice Thomas, Ice-T, etc.), and it really pisses off the righties when the black man gets a white woman.

If for some unexpected reason Obama gets to replace a conservative justice, that is a story.

You mean like the Alito O'Connor swap?

You are an idiot.

Did you look up Umbanda, stupid?

After the recent anti-American Supreme Court decision that gave the international owners of multi-national corporations more clout than USA citizens in the election of our representatives, we need some major changes.

This was not a "conservative" decision, it was an anti-American because the USSC handed power to international corporations that represent owners and workers from all over the world. They are not American corporations today even though they may have been 20 years ago. Their only allegiance today is to Wall St, the CEO pay, and bottom line.

Did you look up Umbanda, stupid?

According to wiki "Umbanda is an Afro-Brazilian religion that blends African religions with Catholicism"

Uh-huh, but CT is NOT a practitioner of Umbanda.

CT is a Roman Catholic

If it was supposed to be joke it wasn't not so much funny as it was.. stupid.

Be Well.

I don't think so. He's a liberal, so another liberal would just keep the same balance. The big battle would be if a conservative left the court during Obama's presidency.

"The big battle would be if a conservative left the court during Obama's presidency."

What do want?
A heart attack!
When do we want it?
Now!

The Right is going to go nuts if he doesn't nominate someone they deem "moderate" and I doubt that will happen.

THIS.

Please! Please! Please! Please! Please! Please!

* fingers crossed *

Be Well.

It would be just awful if anything happened to Thomas or Scalia or Kennedy in the next couple of years. Just awful.

Someone like janet napolino taxman? She WAS on Obama's short list in mid-december, just to show you how high his standards are!

Belive me, Barry will only nominate someone who's to the left of Karl Marx....

Why do you say that? He's moderate, and his approach has been moderate. You don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

If Scalia were to suddenly develop digestive issues.. he would obviously be inserting DocSmooth suppositories. A proven mental laxative.

Once Obama cleans up the mess he inherited from the Bush/Cheney fiasco, he'll turn out to be more moderate than he gets credit for now.

So, yes, a moderate Justice would be fine with me.

And young too. Don't forget YOUNG

Think of the future, folks.

Rachell Maddow is young. How old is Ariana Huffington?
