Florida lawmakers are considering a "family friendly" bill that would deny tax credits to films and television shows with gay characters in favor of those promoting traditional values. The proposal, which has fueled a heated controversy for its discriminatory nature, would increase current tax credits from 2 to 5% of production costs for shows considered "family friendly." The little-known provision was slipped into a $75-million incentive package that Republican leaders who hold the majority in the state House of Representatives hope will bring more entertainment industry jobs to Florida.

So no documentaries on the Republican party or evangelical churches then.

No movies about Alexander the Great will be filmed in Florida.

Can't we just give the panhandle to Alabama and be done with it. These retro-turds really belong in Texas but Alabama is closer.

So no documentaries on the Republican party or evangelical churches then.

I'm sure the holy-rolling crowd will bend their rules like a Dominican schoolboy in Rush's villa. The republican party knows that principles mean nothing if you can't abandon them when it is politically convenient.

Again, allowing govt the power to tax different people at different rates creates this kind of shit.

Change the tax structure to be a flat, fixed percentage and then this ignorance wouldn't happen.

I doubt Disney World would support it. While it's doubtful it's "the happiest place on earth", it is certainly "the gayest place on earth".

So if I produce my new sitcom "Those Whacky Mengele's" in Florida, will I get the tax credit? The only homosexuals will be featured in ashtrays, lampshades, soap -that sort of thing. Surely those depictions wouldn't be offensive enough to disqualify me would they?

This should be interesting.

Why do idiots waste time passing stupid laws like this? I am sure Florida has more important issues to be addressed.

Libbies shouldn't mind paying higher taxes anyhow. Especially big corporations like media companies.

Every state has a "movie tax credit" just about. If Florida restricts their credit scheme, these companies will just move these productions to another state. See how the moral majority gets in the way of the so-called "pro-business republicans?"

So . . . you're saying that higher tax rates encourage capital formation and growth elsewhere?

Gee. Sounds like something a conservative might say. I wonder if anyone has thought of that up in Obamaland.

So . . . you're saying that higher tax rates encourage capital formation and growth elsewhere?

Apples to oranges. Generally the same legal protections are afforded to corporations accross the states. Companies are not afforded the protections this great country of ours affords them in many of the countries with lower tax rates. As a matter of fact, while they may have low tax rates many coporations pay "taxes" in the form of bribes to foreign governments. There will be a time when these foreign regimes crack down on US entities and they will be stuck flapping in the wind. At that point they will come scampering back to the safe waters of the US.

Case in point: Russia and Yukos.

"If Florida restricts their credit scheme, these companies will just move these productions to another state. See how the moral majority gets in the way of the so-called "pro-business republicans?"

Doesn't Florida offer more tax credits for movies that don't contain smoking, cussing and nudity?

Not sure. I am pretty sure there is no such prohibition here in Louisiana. We just had one of the largest production studios outside of CA built here recently. I am no fan of the tax credit as I don't think it really generates any revenues as originally intended. The thinking behind these credits is that production companies will come into the state, spend money and hire more people, in turn raising revenues through sales taxes and income taxes on those hired. It hasn't really worked out that way. I would rather see incentives for technological firms and engineering.

that's what we have here. We just call it "lobbying".

why hasn't it worked out that way? Do they come and make movies or don't they? Is money spent locally as a result?

C-Span is fucked.

why hasn't it worked out that way?

State's were horribly wrong in their estimates. They also expected to generate revenue by making these credits transferrable and taxing the credit generating entity an income tax on the sale. Credits aren't selling for as high as the states expected, which is another reason the credit has been a failure in my opinion.

I really abhor the use of taxation to promote social views. This is whacky stuff.

"that would not be the kind of thing I'd say that we want to invest public dollars in."

just who's money does he think that is? who is this "public" --IT"S EVERYONE.

fucking Nazi dicks.

Hello, Niceville.

Popeye

He dated a tranny and they adopted, so he's kind of not gay.

I thought Mickey married Minnie and Donald was with Daisy.

Judge to Mickey: Mr Mouse, you want a divorce because your wife is crazy?

Mickey: No your honor, I want one because she is fucking Goofy!

So Snow White sat on Pinocchio's face and said "lie to me! Lie to me!"

Speaking of Florida:

This weekend Sarah Palin visited Orlando, the home of Rep. Alan Grayson (D, FL-08). Naturally, she took the opportunity to criticize Grayson.

In response to Palin's attack on Rep Grayson, Grayson actually complimented Palin. Grayson praised Palin for having a hand large enough to fit Grayson's entire name on it. He thanked Palin for alleviating the growing shortage of platitudes in Central Florida.

Grayson added that Palin deserved credit for getting through the entire hour-long program without quitting. Grayson also said that Palin really had mastered Palin's imitation of Tina Fey imitating Palin. Grayson observed that Palin is the most-intelligent leader that the Republican Party has produced since George W. Bush.

When asked to comment about what effect Palin's criticism might have, Grayson pointed out, "As the Knave's horse says in Alice in Wonderland, 'dogs will believe anything.'"

"I look forward to an honest debate with Governor Palin on the issues, in the unlikely event that she ever learns anything about them," Grayson added.

So if a show like Grey's Anatomy, or CSI wanted to shoot an episode there, they wouldn't allow it, but if 24 wanted to cut somebody's eye out, the check would be ready by wrap time?

Why not "no tax credits for ANY TV shows" as a simple solution?

Then stay away from Florida, Zombie!

Sabbatai, has it ever crossed your pathetically small mind that a straight person would stand up against homophobic fuckstains?

They're not my problem, but they are a problem. From time to time, extremist filth such as yourself need to be reminded of their proper place.

Where do I apply for a NEA grant for my next artistic expression. I have an Obama statue I am going to cover in human feces and urine. It is very artistic and I know he left will be able to appreciate my creativity.
