Wait a minute as a Cajun I have to take umbrage with your statement. The difference between Cajuns and Creoles has shit little to do with skin color.

A Cajun must be a descendant of an Acadian. The Acadians were a group of French immigrants in present day New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada. The English expelled the Acadians from Canada in 1755, and they re-settled in southern Louisiana.
A Creole does not have to be a descendant of an Acadian.

That's shaky at best. For one, Latinos aren't subject to baseball's June amateur draft. There have been arguments put forth to make it a "world" draft, but at present some kid from the Dominican can sign at something like age 16. He's free to negotiate with any big league club.

Frankly, baseball hasn't done the marketing job that other sports have. Ask people my age (49) what sport hero they wanted to be... and you'd get answers like Hank Aaron, Willie Mays... but you'd get basketball players of a racial mixture and probably the same with football.

Without high profile role models, youngins drift to sports with marketable players. Think hoops, you think Kobe and LeBron. ESPN and the 24 hour sports environment lends itself well to the individuality of basketball, so little wonder a talented kid who could play either sport might have his heart in what's been glorified throughout childhood. Makes sense to me.

OTOH, Al Campanis might make a different argument.

Sorry, TXL, I really didn't put that very well. What I was actually thinking of is the krewes and social clubs. I've seen interviews with some members that explained membership to some was tied not just to whether a person was black or white, but their "degree of blackness". Back in the day there were light-skinned and darker-skinned clubs, and the lighter the skin the higher up the social totem they stood.

In other words, it was about as irrational as what our current subject is saying.

Can't stick up for the Angels since I am a Dodger fan. I agree the name change was stupid and don't understand why the OC Supervisors allowed the name change, if they could have stopped it.

Look at the Middle East- with the resources they have, they could be the ones ruling the world, but they are too busy fighting against one another over lines on a map. Who keeps them fighting and supplied with the best new arms? The people who would have to follow them if they ever stopped fighting.

Obviously, Hunter has some racial issues he needs to work through. But what I find most interesting about Tori's comments is the underlying premise that fans in general give a shit if a guy is African-American or Dominican. His assumption seems to be that fans want to see black Americans on the field and therefore MLB gets around that by "fooling" the fans with dark skinned people from Latin American countries. This is ridiculous. What most fans care about is how well the guy plays. To the extent that there are fans who only want to see black American players, they wouldn't represent a large enough group for MLB to worry about them.

The reason why there are so many Latin Americans in MLB is because the sport is very popular in that part of the world and they work hard at becoming great at it. If Tori Hunter has some racist need to see more black Americans in MLB than he can use part of his $17 million per year salary to set up baseball related programs for young black Americans.
