Critics are questioning the accuracy of a 120-year-old weather station network that measures surface temperature in the U.S. by tallying paper reports from volunteers whose data is rife with human error.

Requirements aren't very strict for volunteers: They need a modicum of training and decent vision in at least one eye to qualify. And they're expected to take measurements seven days a week, 365 days a year.

That's a recipe for trouble, says Watts, who told FoxNews.com that less scrupulous members of the network often fail to collect the data when they go on vacation or are sick. He said one volunteer filled in missing data with local weather reports from the newspapers that stacked up while he was out of town.

Well, you're not going to spend any money on an advanced system, so STFU.

Oh, and FOXNEWS are a bunch of lying assholes. Nice source.

The article is a farce. The network has worked just fine. You'd have to be a fool to think that it would be riddled with errors throughout all these years.

Any denier here willing to say that they can't trust mercury thermometers, even after millions of weather forecasters, doctors, nurses and mothers have been depending on them with absolutely no problem for hundreds of years? Any denier here willing to say that they can't trust what they write down on a piece of paper?

Oh, surely 120 years ago temperature takers were in cahoots with their future counterparts. And what about barometers? How can we trust them?

Anthony Watts is a global warming sceptic. Gee, didn't see that coming a mile away. Next myth, please.

You know, this is exactly what I'm talking about. Instead of having a decent discussion on the science of global warming, I actually have to explain that thermometers and writing on paper works. Even children don't dispute the use of thermometers and writing on paper.

Oh yeah, look at the use of the phrase "sent in by snail mail". Ooh, the alarm bells are really ringing now! What a joke.

He said one volunteer filled in missing data with local weather reports from the newspapers that stacked up while he was out of town.

And?

Check out weatherbug.

There are tons of locations where temperatures are measured, and probably measured much more accurately than an individual would measure them.

Hell I think there's at least six just for my area alone.

I'm a member of CWOP (Citizens Weather Observer Program).

My weather station has been sending data to NOAA, NASA, and the NWS, every 10 minutes for the past 10 years.

The thing is the amount of warming that is causing all this alarm is I think .1 of a degree over 10 years. Does this system even appear to be accurate to .1 of a degree? Has anyone here seen an outdoor thermometer that was accurate to .1 of a degree?

Didn't you know scientists buy all their thermometers at Ace Hardware?

"Has anyone here seen an outdoor thermometer that was accurate to .1 of a degree?"

The thermometer in Zatoitchy's scientific, peer-reviewed swimming pool is more accurate than that. Just ask him and he'll give you a temp report in hundredths.

But does he have decent vision in at least one eye?

In the land of AGW, a one eyed scientist is king.

This type of science might be worthy of an eagle scout badge but I wouldn't bet trillions of dollars on it.

"Fair and Balanced" slandered ACORN and now they are going after the Weather Service?

Yeah.. good luck with that!

The Weather Service is one agency that actually produces a product yet these Faux clowns are so desperate to deny Climate Change they will go after the volunteers who are helping save the taxpayer money.

nice job Fucs Snooze!

Are you an oil company paid whore or just a fucking idiot?

I just got out of my meeting with Exxon and Mobil executives over our global warming denial scheme. We've decided to document our money trail. Here's the link.

I am going with whore. But, prolly not paid so that would be a cheap whore.

"Has anyone here seen an outdoor thermometer that was accurate to .1 of a degree?"

My Vantage Pro2 weather station records temps +/- 1 degree F, but my calibration is six months out of date.

The ".1 of a degree" no doubt comes from data averaging, a very basic research concept.

Amateurs, just freeking amazing. Maybe with something so important we should use professionals. I am sure nobosy here here goes to an "amateur Doctor.

Oh great. Next you'll expect to understanding the concept of "average" and go into σ.

According to the article they do round up their readings.

I wouldn't be surprised if the liberal volunteers are tacking on a degree or two.

I work part time for the health insurance companies too.
