If you are talking to me, the kids might have wanted to lift them up in Black History Month. I don't know. I am sure we would hear complaining that White teachers limited students ability to honor who they wanted for Black history month.

I had occasion to sit in on a music class recently where the 12-13 y/o's were giving oral reports on who influenced them musically.

Two girls did a joint report on Eminem - the girls had the spiky colored hair - one with studs peppering her lips - both with pants that had to be painted on - black fingernails - both could not give any reason why they liked his music but for the fact, "he hates women - he hates his mom - he hates his girlfriend - we like him!"

Most of the kids cheered and clapped and then an ordinary looking young man got up to do his report on Johnny Cash - he took great pains to do a collage of his history and spoke about how his guitar playing influenced him and was quite descriptive and poised in his presentation.

The kids that cheered the others were booing and hissing and saying, "ooooooh, I hate Johnny Cash...blah...blah..."

The teacher intervened and spoke to the class about the different tastes in music and how Cash had influenced him.

It was so disheartening for the little guy.

What is at stake here are youthful hearts and minds. Different strokes you say?

Okay, you have 30 kids in a class. And, let's say that they each are responsible for choosing someone that is a Black History icon. The kids need help and ask the teachers for some ideas. These two white teachers have OJ Simpson, Dennis Rodman and RuPaul in their top 30? They were trying to humiliate these kids. How would these teachers react if their child's black teacher suggested Adolf Hitler, Richard Simmons and Boy George as white icons? Simmons and Boy George are not necessarily bad people but, they almost assuredly are not in the top 30.

What these teachers did was give vent to their subdued, yet very real, racist beliefs. They should be fired immediately.

I think the issue is that these were impressionable early elementary school children and the teachers were mocking a black history event. What does teaching children self-hatred accomplish? They exercise authority over these kids and help to shape their self image for the rest of their lives. This is more than PC run amok.

I had the pleasure of sitting next to Rodman at a strip joint a couple of years ago. When I say pleasure, I mean because every stripper couldn't wait to come up and sit or say hello. That said, he is the ugliest person I have ever been introduced to, and to this day still can't figure out how women can overlook his looks. I will say though, he threw some pretty impressive parties when he lived in Newport Beach.

I don't think it's so much that OJ is a hero in the black community. I think the reaction of some black people was attributable to the feeling that a black man finally beat the system that had beaten them down for many decades.

Assuming you are a white person...how would you feel if your child's black teacher told your young impressionable child that one of his/her race's icons was James Earl Ray? Maybe James Earl Ray is an icon of yours...and probably was to thousands of white Americans back in the 60's. But, I wouldn't think you would want your child's teacher to throw that one out there.

You might want to stop and think about how much of your core beliefs are exposed when you post a message like that.

What a different tale of history exists in reality than what we were taught in school! History, as taught in the public schools, has always been sanitized and selective. Up until recently the sanitizers and selectors were whites. I suspect from your statemnet that you don't like it so much when the shoe is on the other foot.

I'm a white guy so maybe that clouds my thinking on this, but here goes...

First, there are VERY few (white or black) high profile "role models" who don't come with some degree of baggage. That said, I suspect when the general public thinks of OJ or Rodman, they think of them for more contemporary (read: evil or misguided) things than their younger days as pro athletes.

To a degree Tiger Woods falls into that same category. He's somewhat radioactive at the moment since the general public's exposure (no pun intended) to him is for less-than-role-model activities.

On a different level, I wonder how the black population, specifically, views OJ. Yes, there were flaws on the part of the police and prosecution for failure to do a competent job without cheating. They failed the "reasonable doubt" test.
