Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating why a child was allowed to direct air traffic at John F. Kennedy airport, one of the busiest airports in the country. The FAA says a controller brought the child to work on Feb. 17 and allowed him to talk to pilots. "Pending the outcome of our investigation, the employees involved in this incident are not controlling air traffic," the FAA said in a statement. "This behavior is not acceptable and does not demonstrate the kind of professionalism expected from all FAA employees." The agency declined to comment beyond the statement.

Why does the FAA hate childrn?

Be Well.

Reagan's Fault!

Timmy, do you like Gladiator Movies?

I heard a bit of the tape on the radio today, and I must say that this kid was clear, the directions were easy to follow, and he gave better directions that I have gotten in the past from bored ATC in Col. Sp.

Was this part of the take your child to work program?

I just read about this. This is so harmless and they make it out be so dangerous. The kid probably had his father right there behind him telling him what he needed to say. Its not like he was the only one up there directing flight traffic, come on. If something had happened or went awry the adult would have taken over and handled the situation immediately. This is such a non story its not even funny. I hope they dont end up firing the guy over this.

Agreed.

For something less funny--

Aeroflot Flight 593, was a "Russian Airlines"[1] Airbus A310 passenger airliner, registration F-OGQS, operating on behalf of Aeroflot, which crashed into a hillside in Kemerovo Oblast on 23 March 1994. All 75 passengers and crew were killed.

Voice and flight data recorders revealed that the pilot's 15-year-old son Eldar Kudrinsky, while seated at the controls, had unknowingly disabled the A310's autopilot's control of the ailerons, which put the aircraft into a steep bank, and then an uncontrolled dive. The pilots were not aware of the partial disconnection of the autopilot, which occurred with no audible alarm, and did not regain control of the aircraft.

The accident sparked outrage in the aviation community around the world, and ultimately helped re-write many regulations on flight deck protocol and sterile cockpit environments. In addition, airlines around the world almost immediately began inspection and retraining of the autopilot devices onboard aircraft.[citation needed]

Great Movie

A smuch as I would love to say something smart I cannot.

GREAT MOVIE

You get a freebie

And don't call me Shirley.

I was a controller, I let my son turn on the taxiway lights and shoot the light gun.

I let my daughter turn the sequenced flashing lights on and off.

Thats a plenty big thrill for a kid and completely harmless.

I would never have considered letting em talk on the radio.

I monitered some pretty dim trainees tho.

My favorite was a kid named Tommy Springer. A stutterer. My favorite quote from Tommy: "c..c..cleared for immed..immed..immed.....hold short".

Good times, yeah, good times.

He didnt make the cut.

I had a controller tell me to take a turnoff I'd already passed; Fortunately the Southwest captain was a real pilot and initiated the go-around on his own.

I was flying a Cessna 172 for crying out loud.

OTOH One night in '98, iced up and flying into DC solo IFR in my P Baron the autopilot quit and ATC was utterly perfect at giving me GPS inputs and vectors with a minimum of chatter. Turned out to be a lose screw on a terminal strip.

OWS

Growing up, we had a family friend - a Korean War vet - who was specifically given the job of radio operator to help him get over his stuttering. It made him speak clearly and specifically. He no longer stuttered after that.

The adult in me is saying fire everybody within 100 feet of this. The kid in me is saying HFS that's awesome.

Tommy got too nervous when the traffic built up. Nice man...poor candidte for a controller.

Had one trainee who was afraid to send em around. I made him send the director of the FAA around for a bogus 'dog on runway' to teach him not to fear tellin em to go around.

The Director, Langhorn Bond, came to the tower to congratulate us on our vigilance. The trainee found his nerve and became a pretty good controller.

Takes confidence, coffee, and a big pair of balls to do the job.

Never saw a good woman controller.

Not that I'm sayin...just sayin.

Child Directed Air Traffic at JFK

They knew something was wrong, when all the planes were arriving and departing on time.

FF!

How cute! I hope that the FAA backs off and allows this fun to continue. Air traffic controllers should be able to have their kids, relatives and friends have a go at it. They only need to be able to hear and repeat. A three year old could do it. JFK shouldn't be the only airport. Why not any airport in the world?

What's that? Ridiculous, you say? No kidding. I can't believe that those pilots were okay with it. It's only a non-story until you're an airline passenger.

Harmless or not, the FAA has to cover their butt lest this incident be used against them at some future time when a similar incident turns out to be not quite so harmless.

This inpropriety may have been fun for the kid and indeed harmless, but the perception of inpropriety makes the FAA look like a bunch of clowns.

I don't blame them for lowering the hammer on the controller.

This is such a non story its not even funny.

Pretty much Spud's take.

No harm, no foul.

If something bad had occurred because of this breaching of the rules then Spud woulda sed hang 'em all from the highest yardarm. But as nothing negative happened then a mere slap on the wrist should be the only outcome.

OIC wot u did there!

FF! ^_^

Be Well.

I would have loved to have been the kid.

I would have hated to be a passenger.

From what I heard, the kids were only telling pilots who are on the ground that they are clear. IMO, there's a big difference between that and talking to a pilot who is in the air.

The kid wanted to grow up and be a controller! Now his only lesson will be that regulations are all-powerful and he will have to become a goddamn lawyer.

I can't believe this is still being talked about on the news! For Gods sake - the kids weren't actually performing the damn job - they were echoing what their father told them to say to planes that were ON THE GROUND.

And if I was a passenger on a plane and heard a child's voice give the clearance for takeoff I would get a chuckle out of it.

There have been many instances where ghost controllers (people playing around on the frequency either jokingly or malicously) issued control instructions contrary to the real controllers. You can imagine the confusion that this would create in an arena where split second timing an accuracy is demanded. A lot of people think it was cute and harmless, but timing is everything. Would we be laughing if this took place hours before 9-11, or during the mid-air collision where 5 Italian tourist was killed. (The comments from the public would have been more condemning.) When controllers transmit control instructions on an FAA frequencies they must be aware that whatever is said could end up on the evening news or worse in a court room.

How can the FAA defend its workforce(and Tax Payers) against law suits brought by plaintiffs who can point out that the FAA doesn't even follow its own rules and lack professionalism and disregard for public opinion and safety.

I was a controller for 35 years and I have never heard of witness anything like this. Safety is our # one mission. It can't be compromised with a joke, bad phraseology or non-professionalism. To be perfect you have to practice perfectly all the time. The public should demand and receive nothing less.

And if I was a passenger on a plane and heard a child's voice give the clearance for takeoff I would get a chuckle out of it.

But you would have no reason to assume that the child is only giving a clearance for takeoff.

Just wait until you hear that voice coming over the PA system from the cockpit on your flight.
